But as it stands there's no reason not to 3rd party protest vote, which is why I'll be doing just that and won't have to live with the shame of supporting either of these candidates.

Consider the '92 election....imagine your a republican who was upset that HW Bush raised taxes, so you were one of the 19% that voted for Ross Perot; maybe it was a protest vote because you couldn't bring yourself to vote for William Jefferson. Ironically, the protest vote weakened HW's position and took just enough votes away from HW to let Slick Willy in the door.....HW certainly screwed up by raising taxes after vehemently denying he would do so, but more has to happen to go from the highest presidential approval rating of all time (89%) to losing an election 14months later. Alot had to do with the votes that Ross Perot took from the republican party, some of which were 'protest' votes.

That's one way to look at it. Another is that if some third party candidate gets 27% of the vote in the general, maybe that will encourage someone like a Mark Cuban that they can be a serious candidate. And maybe that will lead to a real outsider who can do the job getting into the Oval Office and setting real reforms in place.
