i am fully aware that my opinion and desires hold zero weight to the ND football program.....but i'd LOVE to see ishaq play full time DE...that's his natural fit.

Totally agree. His best asset is his pass rushing ability... And for some reason Diaco never wanted his hand in the dirt. We have wasted a lot of time trying to fit a square peg in a round hole with Ishaq, imo.

I agree Ishaq could be a great 4-3 DE and will probably be used primarily in that role, yet Kely wants the option of keeping it open.

You all brought up two good things as I summarize, that we can take from BK's PC :

1) Evaluate players to find their best fit, and (regardless of the players that were moved in the last three years, it was most usually to fit the teams needs that they were even evaluated,) find out where their skills fit first, then put them in position.

2) Kelly defensively seems to be talking defense from an "NFL" kind of perspective. One real reason, if this is true, that more big time prospects may consider ND, and I believe Kelly is selling the hell out of this, is that ND's football program is a great place to develop skills for a possible NFL career.

I loved the GB and Redfield battle.!!! 2 young studs engaging in a battle of strength and desire. The best part of it is they wear the Blue and Gold and we get to watch them for another 2+ years!!!!!!

Let's hope BVG's downhill philosophy is better than that of Tenuta. I remember the excitement with that guy as well. Though I admit that anything other than Diaco's bend but not break predictability will be refreshing.
Also..BK is high on Hunter, so let's assume there is a reason. He prob has more upside than Corey who will be solid.

Kinda like that time Harrison Smith wasted a year playing LB or whatever you want to call it.

I feel like Jarron is the type of player who when you're not counting on (last year, relying on Nix/Tuitt for every-down plays), he's such a physical freak that he'll stand out once in a while when you're not looking for it, like the examples you mentioned. But this year he's going to be expected to get penetration everydown. We'll be watching and depending on him constantly, rather than just be glad he made a play once in a while while Nix/Tuitt handled the grunt of the work. I hope you're right, but I'm still very skeptical of him.

Physically, I just didn't see Rochelle as being ready. As a true frosh, that's expected. But I can't remember a time where he showed a sign of being physically ready - blowing by his guy with speed, bull rushing/over powering. Again, expected, and he'll be really good in time, but IDK if that time was now (hopefully he's had a killer off season, With Longo's program, I have no doubt).

Little late on this and sorry if it's been discussed and beaten to death but if you go back and look at Nix as a red shirt freshman, he wasn't that impressive. He lacked intensity and work ethic and the spring AFTER that season he was very close to losing the starting job to Kona. I think that was the time when he thought about going home. But then he came out the next Fall and dominated and helped ND have the best defense it has had in 20 years and helped secure a berth in the NC game. Jarron may not be the next Louis Nix but I'm less concerned about him now than I was at the beginning of last season. It feels like Nix has been the starting nose forever but he really only had 1 great season and his senior season was cut short because of injury and likely contributed to him not being quite as effective early in the season. But I still love Lou and think he is headed for great things in the NFL.

Personally, I think it's a smokescreen. We always just play base 4-3 for spring game anyways with no blitzes so no effect there. I think he wants to head into Michigan with them having as little idea as possible of how we're going to run our defense. I just don't see how we have the personnel to play the same style of two-gap 3-4 we've played previously... maybe we'll play a lot of one-gap 3-4... but I think what you're ultimately going to see will fully resemble a 4-3 IF we're confident in our MIKE linebacker. In private comments, some coaches let the cat out of the bag a little to prospects during the recruiting process that more of a 4-3 defense was coming, and I think they were speaking honestly then.

But this is just my intuition and guess. We'll know soon enough. I could very easily be wrong.

To expound on this... recruits coming out of junior day offered some quotes about coaches telling them that they're moving to a 4-3. Maybe they mean "in the future"... but...

Saw a tweet from Anna Hickey that practice kicks off at 7:30am, with temps below 0. Rough day to start! Lol. Golson made a tweet about how blessed he feels to get another chance with his guys #ComeBackSeason

I distinctly remember Coach Kelly mentioning during his PC that practices will start indoors because of how cold it was that morning.

Someone who's played collegiately can tell me the reason for this, but why practice so early in the day? Personally, when I was in college and even now, no way I'm moving at 100% at 7:30am in the morning. When I exercise, I'm much more into it after I've been moving around for a few hours and 100% alert and energized.

so they can go to class afterwards and then study i would presume? allows for meetings/tape sessions later in the day too.
I agree with you though I wouldn't how its possible to hydrate/eat properly and be energised for a 7:30am practice at full tilt

I suppose. Maybe it's impossible, but if I were an athlete, I'd rather practice and film in the afternoon and evening, rather than wake up at 6:30am in 0 degrees and try to win a position battle, lol.

There's a reason why they do it this way I'm sure, it would just be really hard for me.

Yeah it's all about class scheduling I'm sure. The coaches probably tell the players not to schedule classes at certain times in the day, plus they should get first crack and scheduling classes so they can have those times free. 7:30 practices would suck, but at the same time all it takes is a few hard hits and some sprints and someone will wake up pretty fast so they don't get chewed out haha.
