Damn it. Guys are dropping like flies. Damn. Danny has to think about his future. Hope he gets better.
He looks like a heck of a guy.

Springman injury scares me. If they don't know what it is, how are they so quick to rule him out of a game 2 weeks from now?

Not a huge loss, I don't think he would have seen a meaningful minute.

It could be a big loss. It means he will lose a semester of practice, possible special teams minutes and possible game minutes in mop-up time to get him ready for 2014.

Fox and Calabrese run out of eligibility, Moore has a 5th year but so far the light has not gone on. Aside from the freshman coming in 2014, there is Grace, Schmidt and Deeb for the ILB rotation. (I assume his quickest way to the field is ILB since Councell and Smith are ahead of him at Dog and Ishaq and Okwara at CAT for 2014.)

I'm just talking about the impact on this year's team, not Doug's development. If we're talking about his development and future year's ILB depth, of course it's a big loss.

I was thinking the same.

If i'm not wrong, 3 transfers (Kiel, Neal, Ferguson). One NLI released (Vanderdoes). One suspended (Golson). Four season-ending injuries (Hounsell, Randolph, Spond -career ending- and Baratti). If this team ends playing a BCS Bowl, they will be true winners.

One reason: IF we need Springmann to beat Temple... well thats a bigger problem. We might as well just give him the extra week to rest and prep.

But I agree it definitely isn't good news, and is a bit concerning.

Tough day at the office for ND fans. Looking at the bright side...

Spond retirement = more Jaylon
Randolph injury = no wasted redshirt on special teams (if he was going to play ST).
Springmann injury = more Ishaq at DE.

I'm not worried about year's down the road. Too much bizarre **** happens for me to try to quantify it all. As far as this year, I don't think it's a loss for the 2013 team.

Perhaps that's true for 2013. But first time starters with no meaningful minutes (or who missed an entire semester of practice) at multiple positions is not a great way to have success in CFB.

If YOU don't care about the impact on the future, ok. But it is a reality in CFB whether you care or not.

Again, I'm not saying it isn't a loss for Doug or the future of ND LBs, but this year it will not matter. I'm only saying it will not impact us in 2013.

I should have made that clear in my OP. My bad.

So is Smith the starting DOG then?

I wonder if they will do a Calabrox thing with them, where Councell (who is bigger and I presume better against the run) plays more against running teams and Smith (who I believe is faster and better in coverage?) plays more against passing teams.

It's a "tag team" w/ Councell. I'd expect Smith to be the main starter a couple weeks in to the season

We got a lot of good news about Jaylon today. Even if we had a healthy Spond, there is no way they could keep Jaylon off the field if he is locking TJ down in the slot.

Small note??? I'd classify that in the BIG NEWS category.

I see what you're saying but I think it would matter what down it is, not so much about what team they're playing. Example, if it's 2nd and 3 then I would expect to see Councell out there. If it's 3rd and 9, I would expect to see Smith out there.

This is assuming Jaylon is better against the pass and Ben is better against the run

My main concern at the DOG position is that in my opinion, is a position where you are forced to have a High football knowledge and Jaylon and Ben are really really young players. Who are the third DOG behind them?

I wouldn't call Councel a young player.... And I suppose Romeo could move back given recent events? IDK

We went to the NC game in 2012 with these first time starters and others who contributed lots of meaningful playing time:

Farley
Russell
Jackson
Shumate (Nickel)
Spond
Golson
Daniels
Lombard

Others who saw lots of playing time
Sheldon Day
Daniel Smith
Springman
Niklas
Williams

Talented depth is what matters in college football imo.

Technically, it's probably Rabasa. Realistically, I think Fox would slide outside.

Starts getting thin in a hurry.

Councell is in his third year so he should be fine, also this quote from BK

“@JGKrausz: #NotreDame HC Brian Kelly: "If we make it that complicated we can’t get Jaylon Smith on the field, than we are not good coaches."”

I have a feeling that as long as he doesn't have injury problems, Jaylon will be another 4 year starter at DOG. I know playing freshmen is not ideal but when you have guys like Russell, Shumate, and Jaylon, you know you will have a d*mn good football team in a year or 2 with them having so much experience. I think as long as you don't have a team of mostly freshmen/sophomore starters, that is a good balance. Next year we will have to replace a CB, 3 LB positions, NT, possibly DE. Get these young guys some experience now or next year might be a rough one for our D. We could very well only return 5 starters next year, 6 if you count the Nickelback.
