Not a huge loss, I don't think he would have seen a meaningful minute.
It could be a big loss. It means he will lose a semester of practice, possible special teams minutes and possible game minutes in mop-up time to get him ready for 2014.
Fox and Calabrese run out of eligibility, Moore has a 5th year but so far the light has not gone on. Aside from the freshman coming in 2014, there is Grace, Schmidt and Deeb for the ILB rotation. (I assume his quickest way to the field is ILB since Councell and Smith are ahead of him at Dog and Ishaq and Okwara at CAT for 2014.)
Springman injury scares me. If they don't know what it is, how are they so quick to rule him out of a game 2 weeks from now?

Yikes...I was thinking the same.
If i'm not wrong, 3 transfers (Kiel, Neal, Ferguson). One NLI released (Vanderdoes). One suspended (Golson). Four season-ending injuries (Hounsell, Randolph, Spond -career ending- and Baratti). If this team ends playing a BCS Bowl, they will be true winners.
I'm not worried about year's down the road. Too much bizarre **** happens for me to try to quantify it all. As far as this year, I don't think it's a loss for the 2013 team.
So is Smith the starting DOG then?
Perhaps that's true for 2013. But first time starters with no meaningful minutes (or who missed an entire semester of practice) at multiple positions is not a great way to have success in CFB.
If YOU don't care about the impact on the future, ok. But it is a reality in CFB whether you care or not.
Spond retirement = extra scholarship for 2014 or 5Y candidate.
I may be incorrect but I believe Spond was out of eligibility this year, so I don't think he being out this year adds to a 2014 scholarship.

It's a "tag team" w/ Councell. I'd expect Smith to be the main starter a couple weeks in to the season

I wonder if they will do a Calabrox thing with them, where Councell (who is bigger and I presume better against the run) plays more against running teams and Smith (who I believe is faster and better in coverage?) plays more against passing teams.
My main concern at the DOG position is that in my opinion, is a position where you are forced to have a High football knowledge and Jaylon and Ben are really really young players. Who are the third DOG behind them?

We went to the NC game in 2012 with these first time starters and others who contributed lots of meaningful playing time:
Farley
Russell
Jackson
Shumate (Nickel)
Spond
Golson
Daniels
Lombard
Others who saw lots of playing time
Sheldon Day
Daniel Smith
Springman
Niklas
Williams
Talented depth is what matters in college football imo.

Councell is in his third year so he should be fine, also this quote from BK
“@JGKrausz: #NotreDame HC Brian Kelly: "If we make it that complicated we can’t get Jaylon Smith on the field, than we are not good coaches."”
