August 4th.
I hope we get better coverage of it this year instead of put together clips of about 3 minutes. I understand the staff is trying not to give anything away but keep the fans energized...at least me! Haha

Most are speculating Kelly will have a press conference the day before about various stuff including possibly his contract

Is it the 3rd or 4th? From my understanding, camp starts on the 4th.

I'm going to pretty damn worried if he doesnt have a new contract by then. Too much petty stuff going on recently (transfers, Golson, no oversigning in general) that Kelly wouldn't have to deal with in the NFL or at another school.

August 4th is from a player, so I think that may be correct. Never know these days though.

He lit the fires down here yesterday by what he said about ND and the conferences. The talk shows were full of all kinds of people echoing it.

Summer Workout Nuggets from Sampson

Summer Workout Nuggets from Sampson

- Tommy Rees and Dan Fox have taken on leadership roles

- Bennett, Lo, & Keivarae are all sharing equal reps. Expect Jackson to be the top guy in the boundary with Wood and Russell battling it out in the field.

- A lot of positive feedback about Koyack. Confidence will be a big deal with him and if he flashes his dare I say it, potential.

- Tuitt has rebounded from his hernia and looks faster and stronger than at any point last year

- Elmer is 2nd to Z Martin in Conditioning Drills. Lombard still hasn't gotten a serious look at RG. McGlinchey has a big time mean steak and could see the field sooner than most expected.

- Zaire is extremely confident and has shown amazing maturity, even reaching out to and impressing Tom Mendoza to talk business.

- Prosise, Onwualu and Grace all have also impressed.

Luckylucci passed this along as he couldn't spend much time here this week so thank him. A lot of good stuff there about summer workouts

I just realized that we didn't lose any coaches from last year. We have the exact same coaching staff and that also brings back so much coaching chemistry. That could be an advantage that no one has talked about

I would add something else to this. Coaching staff now feels the veterans know what the staff expects in terms of practice and preparation so it should enable staff to focus more on player development especially among younger players.

That sentence would sound better if it were Carlisle responded Corey Robinson. Tip for the day.

You could probably count on your fingers and toes the number of D-1 coaching staffs that return in full. Among Top 25 teams, one hand.
The staff continuity Kelly has maintained (so far) is a huge advantage that gets little discussed. Also helps in recruiting. Another reason why one very much hopes that contracts have been resolved.

Love that Tuitt info. He'll probably break Tuck's sack record this season, and if he stays for his senior season, he'll have a chance to really distance himself from the previous record, make it unbreakable.

Returning Contributors: Juniors George Atkinson and Cam McDaniel
Rookies and Redshirts: Junior transfer Amir Carlisle, redshirt-freshman Will Mahone, true freshmen Greg Bryant and Tarean Folston.

Position Coach -- Tony Alford: The program's longest-tenured coach and lone holdover from the Charlie Weis era enters his fifth season with the program and third with the running backs: 2009, 2012 and this fall. Alford coached wide receivers for Brian Kelly's first two Irish squads in 2010-11.

Established Star: None. Atkinson is certainly the lead dog exiting spring and entering August and his stats as a No. 3 'back last season were impressive: 7.1 yards per carry, 361 yards, and five touchdowns.

Camp Buzz: Most of it surrounds Bryant and/or Carlisle, the latter a sure-fire contributor if he can remain healthy. Carlisle has the potential to lead the team in rushing and finish as its third most productive receiver -- but he has to play in a game first. Bryant is the fans' choice to supplant Atkinson, but that's often the case for incoming freshman whose deficiencies aren't yet public. (To be fair, I recently predicted Bryant will lead the team in rushing in November, so I'm guilty of supposition as well.)

The Pressure is on… Atkinson. His penchant for bouncing the pigskin outside rather than hammering between the tackles won't play well in the film room. If the 6'2" 215-pound track star doesn't learn that it's "four yards first" as did Theo Riddick last season, he won't hold the job for long.

The Battle is Between… How about "among?" It might be Atkinson vs. Carlisle for the start against Temple, but McDaniel, Bryant, and even Folston should enter the mix over the course of 12 games.

Wither? Will Mahone. The clock isn't officially ticking as Mahone is a redshirt-freshman, but if he exits 2013 as the team's No. 6 running back, it'll be a tough road to ho next spring. Mahone showed the ability to get down the seam and secure a pass in traffic at full speed, and Atkinson noted Mahone's was surprisingly adept as a receiver, prior. Maybe "four yards first" mentality plus occasional threat as a pass catcher could push Mahone into position for playing time.

BCS Dreams Because... The unit has a home run hitter in Atkinson, a do-everything in Carlisle, a potential do-everything in Folston, a budding star in Bryant, and a reliable, all-around player in McDaniel that might be just as good as he's looked in mop-up time. That's a promising committee, and Kelly has used multiple 'backs successfully in each of his first three seasons in South Bend: Armando Allen, Cierre Wood, Jonas Gray, and Robert Hughes in 2010, Wood and Gray in '11, and last fall, Riddick, Wood, and Atkinson plus McDaniel to clean up late. He'll need at least three, if not four to again be involved in '13.

Cause for Pause: None of the players are proven. Of Atkinson's 364 yards, about 36 came against defenses equipped with a working pulse last season (a 34-yard mis-direction beauty vs. Michigan State and a game-winning sprint-and-dive vs. Brigham young). The same can be said for the hard-charging McDaniel, who earned his keep mainly vs. Navy late and a defeated Miami squad in the final quarter. Carlisle hasn't played since December 2011, Bryant and Folston are freshmen, and Mahone didn't crack the varsity in his first season last fall.

There's talent, but that and a quarter won't buy your a phone call (if you could, you know, find a phone booth) when the bullets go live on August 31, or more relevant, in Ann Arbor a week later.

Take it to the bank: If healthy, Carlisle will be the unit's MVP and like his predecessor Riddick last fall, among the team's seven-best players overall at season's end.

I'm interested to see if all this time Kelly & Co. have been spending with Bellichik adds any wrinkles to the offense. Kelly has been picking his brain since last year and has attended multiple Patriots practices. Bellichik also came out for our coaches' clinic. So their is obviously some synergy there.

Look at our offensive personnel for a second... multiple good TEs, a very accurate short-medium thrower, pass catching backs... basically a watered down version of what the Patriots have been using recently with multiple TEs and the like. Their offense works because they exploit mismatches and get the ball out quickly and accurately to the right guy. They run an offense based on efficiency.

I feel like, if we are going to have success this year, it's going to be by playing "big boy" football with our passing game tailored specifically to Tommy's strengths. As a bunch of people have already said, this is the first year we will actually be tailoring the offense to Tommy as "the man" instead of having him thrown into the fire at some point. A creative, accurate, and efficient passing game using big bodied players that allow us to pound the rock is how I imagine things will go. Lots of 2 (or even 3) TE sets and Corey Robinson maybe making an instant impact in a limited role. It could definitely work well.

....or things could go horribly wrong and Hendrix ends up running a bunch of read-option stuff before the year is out. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I have heard quite a bit about this. And Jack Swarbrick seemed to confirm what I have heard.

A) Jack and Brian have been working diligently to find the money to pay all of the assistants well, and assure them of competitive packages to stay.

B) Jack, Brian, and the administration have a development program which they have put in place to develop each assistant to maximize their coaching potential, whether that be becoming a head coach or a more capable assistant. This includes more responsibilities, education and enrichment.

C) The 'snag' for the Kelly contract, has been getting the assistants taken care of first.

D) The power of this implicit camaraderie among the staff is already paying team dividends.

The assistant coaches have all been taken care of. According to TJ Diaco has been taken care of to the point that he wouldn't leave unless it's a big time opportunity.

Free from Scout....
Found this interesting. Wonder if something triggered the move. I like it.

Notre Dame will open its 2013 football training camp at the Shiloh Park Retreat and Conference Center in Marion, Indiana.
The school made the announcement on Thursday as the beginning of the 2013 football season approaches. Training camp will begin for the team on Monday, August 5th.

"I'm excited to take our football team to a facility like Shiloh Park," said Irish head coach Brian Kelly in Wednesday's press release. "Training camp is vital in terms of developing team unity, character, camaraderie and ultimately a focused and specific identity for the upcoming season."

Shiloh Park is a facility that hosts summer camps, banquets, retreats, conferences, and other special events throughout the year. It is owned by the Northeastern Indiana District Church of the Nazarene. The park is about two hours south of Notre Dame's campus.

"This is such a tremendous opportunity for our camp and our staff is thrilled," said Shiloh Park director Dan Heincker via Notre Dame's press release. "As a sports fan, former college athlete and longtime coach, I can't begin to describe the feelings that our camp could possibly play a role in the success of the Fighting Irish this fall."

"Coach Kelly believes in the importance of team building and honestly a camp setting accomplishes it perfectly," Heincker said. "The players will spend significant quality time with one another, beyond the practice field and meeting rooms. The team will get a true understanding and appreciation of their importance to one another."

Notre Dame will perform the acclimatization part of their training camp routine at Shiloh Park. The team will have four practices at the facility before moving back to the LaBar Football Practice Fields on the Notre Dame campus on Friday, August 9th.

Kelly previously took his Cincinnati Bearcats to Higher

Random bump, just an interesting thought. Read this post and thought it made a lot of sense, I then told my dad who is a huge ND fan as well. Immediately after I finished the thought, my dad said "or maybe he is training to be their next head coach." Sort of laughed after he said that, but then I thought about it and it sadly makes a lot of sense. Obviously Kelly being a Boston guy and the whole debacle that was the Pats offseason, maybe Bellichik is done. Obviously I have no source for this, just wondering what your guys' thoughts were.

Another random thought, but pleasanter than the above: as far as Irish He!l week is concerned, I can imagine Michael Deeb going through a few days of it and saying: Gee this is just like my home workout!!
