Phew. That was a close one. But, I'm happy either way. Greta game. See ya next weekend Loyola. I think Loyola is a little overrated, but they will still be favored. Going to be a good one. Anyone know what time the game will be?

Congrats to the Irish on a well played game. You knew it wasn't going to be easy but weathered the storm and most importantly stayed aggressive!! Congrats IrishLax, know you've got to be an excited guy right now. Gonna have a couple of teams next week who have never won a championship. Hope the Irish can break into the old boys club!
On another note, as excited as I am for the Irish, we just witnessed the end of one of the most brilliant college lacrosse careers of all time. Bravo to you Mr. Stanwick, it's been a pleasure watching you over the years. On to Foxboro. Go Irish!!

Stall warnings are called automatically in one of two scenarios:
(1) If a team has a lead with under 2 minutes to play in the game, a stall warning is automatically applied to them.
(2) If a team is on offense and has possessed the ball in the box and then the ball goes from the offensive zone to back across the midfield line without the defense gaining possession, a stall warning is automatically applied.
Both of these are pretty easy to understand... teams with a lead in the last 2 minutes will always be killing clock and if you take the ball alllllll the way out back across midfield you're not exactly attacking the goal.
Finally, at the referees discretion... if he deems that the offensive team is not actively trying to score AND the defense is pressuring the ball... he can apply a stall warning at any time. Purely an eye test; no hard and fast rule.

A couple closing thoughts:
(1) That hit on Foley should've been a 1 minute unreleasable penalty for sure. The refs missed it, but we did get "the next one" when Conor Doyle got hit high.
(2) Steve Murphy is the unsung hero of the game... has had a very quiet year with very limited progress from when he played major minutes as a frosh on the 2010 run to the championship. Today, he had 4 points with 2 goals and 2 great assists... one of which was a zone buster that forced Virginia to go back to their man-to-man.
(3) After Ryan Foley went down, I was so impressed by the composure and fire of the team to go on a 4 goal run and ice the game. That Virginia team has superior "talent" at just about every position except goalie... but we just wanted it more. I also loved the ESPN announcer Quint Kessenich talking about how quality the student-athletes are on the team... how at ND Coach Corrigan makes sure they're getting as many life lessons and lacrosse lessons... I think that really speaks to the overall Notre Dame mission. Couldn't be more proud of the type of program Coach runs... and I honestly believe Brian Kelly is a guy of the same mold who if given time will build a program of hungry over-achievers instead of entitled under-achievers.

Yes sir. FWIW, we match up much better with Loyola than we did with UVA... if our offense continues to show up and Ryan Foley is healthy.... I'll feel pretty good about our chances.
BTW, we should all be rooting for a Colgate upset right now.

Thanks for the stall breakdown. I picked up on the 2 minute one, but couldn't, for the life of me, figure out the referee discretion haha.

Baum reminds of one of the Powell brothers. It's fun to watch and great to see a west coast kid playing so well. The lacrosse expansion is in full force.

It's my dream to make the trip out and watch Michigan someday in the final four. I've been to a final four once and it was a blast.
I would like to see loyola represent the ECAC, but the a-hole fans they brought with them and how they carried themselves makes me want to see ND plaster them. Acting like the Midwest was beneath them.
Represent the Midwest, ND.

Colgate went up 4-2... Danowski called a timeout and said wake up.... Duke scores 9 straight goals and leads 11-4 at halftime. 11 goals in a half! And 9 in a 18 minute span. That's unreal.
Colgate just doesn't have the athletes and can't get possession to run their offense. Too bad... I thought this game had potential to be exciting.

No today's ND game was in Philly. Next year the Final 4 is in the Linc in Philly I believe.

Personally, I would love a rematch in the final with Duke. Not counting the chicken before it hatches, but that would be a pretty cool way to capture a National Title and stamp the program as "elite".

Hey IL, I've been told from an extremely reliable source in the Michigan athletic department, that Battle at The Big House II next year will be Michigan vs ND. It will follow the football spring game like the one this year did.
This is the same source that let me know of the jump to NCAA level months before it was announced. Pretty exciting news!

That'd be very cool! I know that's certainly been discussed... but I wasn't entirely sure it was going to happen. I know our schedule is currently VERY in flex for next year/moving forward because of the likely dissolution of both the Big East and ACC (and Syracuse slated to move to the ACC next year).

I have never watched lacrosse before yesterday. Fun stuff, my 8 year old son played with his crappy lacrosse stick toy for an hour after the game, maybe the third time he picked it up in five years. Of course it helps when ND responds like they did to a couple of kids getting KOed. I like ESPN picking up more sports like this instead of all basketball and football for college.
I will defintely be watching the semis. Go Irish!
We place a lot of focus on football but ND really has made great strides in pretty much every other sport in the last two decades. Mind, body and soul, baby.

Well it's the only sport I care about where we should be able to beat them, so I think it'll be fun (hockey is a toss-up, both teams are elite).

It actually makes a lot of sense for both sides. I know Notre Dame is interested in getting a recurring home-and-home series going... it makes sense to play as many regional opponents as you can to limit travel costs and Michigan should be a pretty good team moving forward as they've got top 20ish recruiting classes coming in the next couple years. Michigan is likely going to be a consistent #11-to-#25 range team a la Ohio State within the next 5 years (under the assumption they get a real coaching staff), which will be a good quality win.

CONGRATULATIONS to John Kemp and Kevin Randall on being named 1st team All-Americans!!
Also congratulations to Matt Miller and Jim Marlatt on honorable mention. People talk an awful lot about "next man in" when it comes to football... on this lacrosse team, they mean it. After graduating All-American defenders Sam Barnes and Kevin Ridgway last year, senior Jake Brems (the #4 longpole in 2011 with lots of game experience) was a lock to start. When Brems went down for the season with a knee injury, it meant two players with basically zero experience (Matt Miller and redshirt frosh Stephen O'Hara) would have to start. Neither had much experience... O'Hara logging 0 minutes in his freshman campaign and Miller for some reason burning redshirt years to play less than 10 minutes in blowout victories over Providence his first two years.
Today, Miller's an All-American with a feature story on inside lacrosse.
Similarly, Jim Marlatt didn't play a single minute last year out with an injury... but the redshirt freshman has stepped into the big shoes of 1st team All-American David Earl and 2nd team All-American Zach Brenneman admirably... scoring a number of key goals in key games and earning himself All-American honors in his first year of action.
Kudos to all of the guys for their hard work and over-achieving this season. Hopefully we can bring home a title.
