Time to roll out the IE member NFL Mock Draft. Anyone can claim a team, 1st come 1st served. You will get the 1st of 2 picks for the teams that have 2 1st rounders (Pats, Browns and Bengals each have 2 picks) and another member will take the 2nd of the 2 picks. Please don't sign up if you aren't around frequently as we don't want this to drag out for ever. Feel free to add some reasoning for your pick. If demand is there, we will go a 2nd round. No projecting trades, just drafting in the order that teams come up. I believe there are 2 coin flips to determine order, we'll iron that out when the flips are decided. I'm taking the Pats 1st pick, #27 overall.
1) Colts (FightingIrishLover7). Andrew Luck QB Stanford.
2) Rams (Rack Em) Justin Blackmon, WR Ok St. Pretty certain th e Rams will trade out here. RGIII will be in this spot, but I'm going with Justin Blackmon. No surprises here.
3) Vikings (Veer Option) Matt Kalil, OT USC. With the number three pick, the Viqueens pick Matt Kalil USC. Matt Kalil will fulfill two roles. He will help to open running lanes for Adrian Peterson and by protecting Christian Ponder's blindside will ease his development. The Viqueens offensive line gave up 49 sacks last season, which was tied for 4th worst in the NFC. As a combined unit they were able to get 2813 rushing yards last season which was 90 yards less than Carolina's remarkable NFC leading 2,408. With Adrian Peterson coming off a torn ACL the Vikings will have to rely on a mixed bag offense to take some of the burden off of him. To do this the OL needs to keep Ponder upright and safe in the pocket. Kalil will add stability to the line and hopefully help the Viqueens to score more offensive TDs than the pitiful 39 they scored all of last season.
4) Browns (1) (gkIrish). Robert Griffin III, QB Baylor. This is a no brainer. The Browns offense was ranked 29th in total yards/game, largely because teams could load up the box since Colt McCoy could not beat anyone with his arm. RGIII may not have the amount of wins Colt McCoy had at Texas but boasts a Heisman Trophy on his resume. Furthermore, the fantastic rookie season of Cam Newton makes this pick more enticing to teams looking to make immediate improvement. Griffin has all the physical tools and is considered by many to be a very intelligent person/qb. If Andrew Luck did not exist, RGIII would be the number 1 pick. Look for the Browns to take a WR with their next pick to help RGIII out.
5) Buccaneers (IrishinFl). Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU. The biggest weak point on the Bucs. Barber is old as dirt and Talib is a knucklehead
6) Redskins (IrishLax). Michael Brockers, DE/DT LSU. Adding a massive freak athlete up front who can play multiple positions in a 3-4 will allow Kerrigan and Orakpo to really get after the QB.
7) Jaguars (NotreDomer23). Trent Richardson, RB Alabama. With the 7th pick, the Jacksonville Jags pick Trent Richardson. He is a top 5 talent, had to take this steal. Jones-Drew needs a back up and hopefully will take over for him soon
8) Dolphins (Mr Larson) Melvin Ingram, DE South Carolina. Ingram and wake on the same line?...I think Mark Sanchez just flinched. Coples, while being a physical freak of nature, may not necessarily have the drive. I feel that Ingram is a safer pick, and in the first round Jeff Ireland is a missionary-position-only kind of guy.
9) Panthers (Ohara831) Quinton Coples, DE UNC. Carolina needs WR, CB and DT. Blackmon is gone, Claiborne is gone and Brockers is gone. Cant justify taking Floyd at #9as much as I like him. Defense minded head coach Ron Rivera will take the most talented player on the board in Quinton Coples. Tremendous talents, but some question is motivation to be his very best. Have to hope that millions of dollars and a tough HC will be motivation to make him a value pick at #9. He is considered a Top 5 talent on most boards, but for that one question mark.
10) Bills (Mr McGibblets) Courtney Upshaw, Outside Linebacker, University of Alabama. I was going to go with an Offensive Tackle or WR, but the Bills also need to address their defense yet again as they did last year with the Marcell Dareus pick. Buffalo ranked tied for 27th in the NFL with just 29 total sacks in 2011. Upshaw can fill the need of a true pass rusher. This past season, he had 52 tackles with 9.5 sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, an interception and two forced fumbles. He has scheme versatility and as Buffalo transitions to a 4-3, he will have no problem adjusting with him being 6'2'', 270. They will be able to use him in the manner Von Miller was used in Denver, pass rushing standing up or hand on the ground.
11) Chiefs (PatsandBostonFan1975) Michael Floyd, WR Notre Dame. Michael Floyd moved up after combine K.C needs what Bowe never could give. I believe he falls into what could be a great fit for him in K.C.
12) Seahawks (OlympiaIrishFan) Whitney Mercilius, DE Illinois. But, there is a glaring hole at DE. Chris Clemmons is really solid but is getting older. And Raheem Brock is WAAAAAAYYYY past old. And Red Bryant is a FA too, and may not resign. So, that leaves a gaping hole at DE. The DB's are really good with 3 guys that were probowlers, and one on the way in Richard Sherman. They need a pass rush in the biggest way. Nick Perry may be very temping out of USC, but the overall talent of Whitney Mercilius may be too much to pass up.
13) Cardinals (nin05) David DeCastro, G Stanford
14) Cowboys (BleedBlue&Gold) Mark Barron, Safety Alabama.
15) Eagles (JimmyMac) Luke Kuechly LB, Boston College. If Kuechly is on the board, and the Eagles are drafting, he will be the pick (while I am a little hesitant to draft a BC guy, seeing as all my family went there, and do I ever remember the days of Mike Mamula). Let's look at why: First, the Eagles have not had a linebacker who can make plays in a while- maybe Jeremiah Trotter in his prime, but even the Axe Man was limited. I actually think the Eagles will trade up in this draft- but at 15 Kuechly would be a great fit. He dominated defensively on an awful BC team, ran a 4.58 at the combine, and had an impressive 38 inch vert. He would solidify the middle of the defense, and Linebacker is definitely a large area if need. If Kuechly is not there- look for the Eagles to trade up or down, as Andy Reid loves to move on draft day. Michael Floyd is actually a possibility, and I'm hearing rumors, while unlikely, about a possible trade up to snag RGIII.
16) Jets (OSU Domer) Nick Perry, DE USC. Jets need a pass rush badly, Perry's the pick.
17) Bengals (1) (WhoDeyIrish). Reilly Reif, OT Iowa. Top 10 talent available at 17.
18) Chargers (NDPhilly). Donta Hightower, LB Alabama. The Chargers need help throughout their linebackers and Dont'a provides versatility to play ILB or OLB in their 3-4.
19) Bears (rtrn2glory) Janoris Jenkins, CB North Alabama a lot of needs for the bears: CB, WR, S, LB with that in mind i'll take the best player available in those positions. Janoris Jenkins, CB North Alabama. with jennings possibly not returning we'll need a lockdown corner. would love to see floyd fall here. wright's combine results scare me and jeffery isn't worthy of a #19 pick so i'll stay away from him. i'd say go after a stud WR in free agency if floyd's not available, which he won't be. was begging for kuechley to fall here.
20) Titans (Irishog77). Dre Kirkpatrick, DB Alabama. the Titans literally need help at every level of their team (OL, WR, TE, RB, DT, DE, LB, S, CB), and Cortland Finnegan is probably moving from Nashville. So yeah, I'll reluctantly make this Dre Day.
21) Bengals (2) (Cincy Gold). Kendall Wright, WR Baylor. i think they can get a good rb in a later rd. at wr, jerome simpson wont be coming back imo because of the drug suspension he will get and he was very inconsistent last year. with the 21st pick, i will take kendall wright out of baylor. i wish one of the cb's were there but there not. i think with a.j. green on one side and the speed of wright on the other, i think that is very scary for opposing defenses. you also have gresham at t.e. and either shipley or hawkins in the slot. would be an exciting offense.
22) Browns (2) (Beryirish). Harrison Smith, Safety Notre Dame. I see that we took RGIII with our first pick. I would like to compliment that with a WR but I think Greg Little will be upcoming and I'm hearing Cleveland may look to free agency for a WR so I won't go there. Always hesitate to take a RB even though I think Cleveland needs one that won't get hurt!! I thinking they should go defense with their second pick. They had a good haul last draft with Taylor at DT and Shears at DE so I would look at either LB or DB. Looking at what's left on the board and I'm not being biased here, I would take S Harrison Smith. We all know what Harrison brings to the table. He is rated the second best safety behind Mark Barron. I think Harrison will immediately bring a mature young leadership to the secondary that they can build around with Haden
23) Lions (Zbikowski88). Jonathon Martin, OT Stanford
24) Steelers (Flying Alamo). Cordy Glenn, OT Georgia.. With the 24th pick the Pittsburgh Steelers take Cordy Glenn, OG, from Georgia. The Steeler's offensive line has been like swiss cheese the past few seasons...and injury plagued on top of that. Glenn is a physical specimen to say the least...He's quite athletic for weighing in around 350...He has 4 years of starting experience in the SEC...and has the flexibility to play inside and outside on the O line if needed. There are many other needs now that the Steelers have ravaged their roster in an attempt to get under the cap...But at this point it'll be Glenn...I was going to take Poe...but I figured they'll get the D figured out...they always do.
25) Broncos (Woolybug25). Devon Still DT, Penn St. The biggest area of need for the Broncos is clearly the DT position. With great linebacker play, they will look to complement that by choosing a defensive tackle. They will choose Still despite the recent rise of Poe and Cox by recruitniks because of versatility and attitude. Still is a vocal leader with a ton of confidence. He never takes plays off, has great size (6'5"/303) and excels in both pass rushing and against the run. He can play inside or outside which is a highly valued attribute that John Fox loves in a defensive lineman.
26) Texans (IrishPat183) Peter Konz, C Wisconsin With the 26th pick, running the risk of not grabbing that playmaker to compliment AJ or Foster, I'm going to take PETER KONZ, C WIS as this team as a whole is already very good and if they were healthy, I believe they're the favorites in the AFC. This is simply taking the next best available player and adding depth to a good Oline to begin with. Yes, Chris Meyers is a pro bowl C, but this team has a nasty problem with the injury bug, so anytime you can add depth, it's a good thing.
27) Patriots (1) (Me2SouthBend) Fletcher Cox, DT Mississippi St. Cox is the type of player that can go inside next to Wilfork and go outside when they align in the three/four. He had a strong combine and the Pats need help at all levels of their D. Cox brings the help up front.
28) Packers (Grahambo) Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
29) Ravens (Irishff1014). Vontaze Burflict, LB ASU .with the 29th pick the Baltimore Ravens take Vontaze Burfict. Let him learn under lewis. They need to keep someone mean on that side of the ball
30) 49ers (Sherm Sticky). Jerel Worthy, DT Michigan St. It came down to Worthy or Andrea Branch of Clemson. I like that Worthy is a hard worker and we Irish fans know how much of a handful he can be. He can immediate backup Isaac Sopoaga at DT and I believe Worthy could also play DE in a 3-4.
31) Patriots (2) (Rhode Irish). Zach Brown, OLB North Carolina. Pass Rusher: The Pats could really use someone who can get after the QB. A lot of good 4-3 ends and OLB have been taken. The best pass rusher left on the board, Zach Brown from UNC, does not fit the 3-4 OLB profile that Belichick prefers (6'4"/6'5", 250 lbs.). Andre Branch is a consideration. He is big enough to fit the prototype of a Belichick 3-4 OLB, but maybe too big. He played some linebacker at Clemson and allegedly has very good closing speed. At the end of the day, I like Zach Brown's raw speed coming off the edge, despite the fact he is undersized and probably slightly overvalued as a workout warrior. If he can learn the position from one of the game's great teachers, he will be allowed to focus on the one thing he can probably do best: get off the edge and after the QB faster than the Tackles can block him. He has the bigger upside and you can't teach speed.
32) Giants (Ironman8) Coby Fleener, TE Stanford I think the Gmen will, as always, take the best player (in their opinion) available left on the board in the first round. I also think they do put a premium on certain positions, and know they can do well with others later on in the draft. With all that being said, with the way this draft has unfolded it has come down to two players for me: RB David Wilson and TE Coby Fleener. Both have great upside, and could be put in positions to be top flight at their positions in the NFL. Furthermore, both address a relative position of need for the GMen, Fleener especially. I have gone back and forth on this pick in my head, and it really just comes down to my preference, combining need, fit and upside (and maybe him chasing down Darius Fleming has something to do with it). With the last pick of the first round, the World Champs take TE Coby Fleener from Stanford, whom Eli will turn into one of the better known and successful TEs in the NFL (and a fantasy stud) over the next decade or so.
Round 2
33) Rams (Rack Em) Mike Adams, OT Ohio State Internal server error trying to cut and paste comments in.
34) Colts (FightingIrishLover7) Reuben Randle, WR LSU With Manning gone, Luck in... look for Reggie Wayne to leave too. The colts are gonna need a new playmaker to compliment Luck.
35) Vikings (Veer Option) Alfonzo Dennard DB Nebraska. Dennard provides a valuable tool for the Viqueens defense to utilize. He can play both as an island dwelling CB or as a run support free safety. Facing archival Green Bay twice a year whose offense is prone to going 4-5 wide. He has the ability to play off the line in man situations and as an over the middle hard hitting zone enforcer. Not the most fleet of foot as you want a primary CB to be, his strength, ferocity and off the line jamming ability can slow a receivers crucial first steps. His ability along side emerging CB Asher Allen can provide a valuable piece in an often torched for big yards Viqueens secondary.
36) Bucaneers (IrishinFl). Alshon Jeffrey, WR South Carolina He was a big time play maker at the college level, and the Bucs need a reciever like that.
37) Browns (gkIrish) David Wilson, RB Va Tech Offense is the theme of the draft for the Browns. The Browns leading rusher last year had under six hundred yards total. Hills was not franchised and will likely not resign with the Browns. Regardless, they need a shifty back to take pressure off whoever starts next year at qb. Wilson is the second best RB after Richardson in this draft
38) Jaguars (NotreDomer23) mohammed sanu WR Rutgers the Jags are take Mohammed Sanu. I have been trying to post this since yesterday but keep getting errors. my bad guys.
39) Skins (IrishLax) Stephen Hill, WR Georgia Tech.
40) Panthers (Ohara831). Stephen Gilmore CB South Carolina
41) Bills (Mr McGibblets). Zebrie Sanders OT Florida State
42) Dolphins (Mr Larson). Ryan Tannehill, QB Texas A&M. If Manning and Flynn are not available, this is the pick for the Fins.
43) Chiefs (PatsandBostonFan1975) Kevin Zeitler, G Wisconsin He will put a little beef in that line . Who ever is behind center needs some protection.
44) Seahawks (OlympiaIrishFan). Kirk Cousins, QB Michigan St.
45) Cowboys (BleedBlue&Gold) Audie Cole, ILB NC State The Cowboys will be looking at inside linebacker here, Audie Cole NC State is the best option here, at 6'4 this kid has great size, and depending on what happens in free agency, we might need him to start.
46) Eagles (ND Philly). Kendall Reyes, DT UConn. Internal Server errors suck.
47) Jets (OSU Domer). Brock Osweiller, QB Arizona St.. Because Dirty Sanchez is not the answer regardless of the question.
48) Pats (from Raiders) (Rhode Irish)
49) Chargers (JimmyMac)
50) Bears (rtrn2glory)
51) Eagles (from Cardinals) (NDPhilly)
52) Titans (Irishog77)
53) Bengals (WhoDeyIrish)
54) Falcons (Georgia Domer)
55) Lions (Zbikowski88)
56) Steelers (Pa Golden Tate Fan)
57) Broncos (Woolybug25)
58) Texans (IrishPat183)
59) Saints (rikkitikki08)
60) Packers (Grahambo)
61) Ravens (Irishff1014)
62) 49ers (Sherm Sticky)
63) Patriots (Me2SouthBend)
64) Giants (Ironman8)
1) Colts (FightingIrishLover7). Andrew Luck QB Stanford.
2) Rams (Rack Em) Justin Blackmon, WR Ok St. Pretty certain th e Rams will trade out here. RGIII will be in this spot, but I'm going with Justin Blackmon. No surprises here.
