All I've heard is "Goslon is the most talented human I've ever seen on a football field" and on and on about how much pure ability he has. It's going to be fun to see it in person.

Ok. I think this is the best team Kelly will have put out on the field. Do you guys agree?

Great question,

I agree, 90% of the team are Kelly's recruits and it seems they have all bought into his brand of football... Watching all the camp footage the team seems very loose and every one seems to be making big plays... This team is going to be fun to watch this year...

Have you watched any of the practice clips? You can SEE his ability too. The ball comes out of his hand super fast (short release) with a lot of zip, he can make throws on the run, he does stuff that make you realize why having the ball in the hands of an athlete is so great, like making sidearm throws around the pass rush off of one foot. He has really quick feet and good vision. He can extend plays and that'll give our WRs a chance to get free. Tommy could not do any of these things. I'm excited for the change.

Also, he looks like a leader out there. It seems like he plays with a lot of confidence. Tommy, while usually poised, didn't do that. He didn't inspire the team to rally around him.

I dunno, I'm pretty pumped to have such a dynamic talent under center.

Do you see how each class of recruits Kelly brings in are more single-minded in their focus? And do you see how many more freshmen are ready to play this year over last? And two years ago the class needed to be redshirted (basically)?

that is the biggest difference i see...when i see other schools starting freshman that just tear it up...i always thnk...why the hell can't we ever have a freshman do that(beside's MF).this year is totally different and i feel we are on more of an even playing field in terms of talent...or the person believing they have the talents and will show it...im not sure if anyone else has noticed but the confidence in the players this year can be seen

That is not what Diaco said. Not at all. He said they were more of an unknown. And had less experience. And he couldn't alow them to take the weight that he depended on last year's group for. He was very vague when it came to his expect

Weird comment, just unnecessarily antagonistic tone. You come off like a d*ck for no reason at all.

Regardless, here's the core part of the quote that I was referring to: "...to think that there would be statistical improvement in the secondary would be a stretch. It's just not gonna happen, the players as a whole, the 2 deep, all 8 players are just not going to be as seasoned as the guys a year ago."

He later went on to describe how it would affect defensive schemes.

Without a doubt Bog, Besides the 3 classes of recruit they're looking for they also recruit a certain type of guy... team leaders, ready to play, super competitive... Plus throw in the work out Longo gets to them before they even get here and these kids are ready... It's a thing of the past to red-shirt all freshmen...

Hey new to the forum, been a fan since my grandad introduced me to the team at a very young age. Was wondering what the secondary is looking like this year, with Qb's like Barkley and Jones on our schedule they will need to play big. Also if calabrese is going to be playing next to TEO again, thanks.

I hope to see atkinson more on offense this year, he really jumped off the screen with his play in the return game.

Chris Brown may just be my sleeper pick of the season.

Kid is a true talent.

Breezy Brown is too good to keep off the field. If he learns routes quickly I hope he starts, or at least significant playing time, sooner rather than later.

Can someone explain why, at the 0:34 mark, Koyack is touching the butt of the guy in front? I realize it's not a Koyack thing, but what is the purpose of that formation in point-afters? Is it just really important to stabilize the guy in front of him? And if so, why?

I dont know if its the film or that I haven't seen a snap of football in 8 months, but the team looks a lot faster this year....especially Cierre.

When was that Mike?

Kevin Hardy started for Ara in '64. Holtz always played a half dozen or so freshman even when the team was deep with talent during the Cerrato years. Joey Getherall started in the Opener against GT under Davie. Matt Lovecchio, Ryan Harris (Willingham), Young, Clausen, Tate, Denson, Pinkett (Faust), Carter, Ferguson, Heavens (Devine), Bettis, Brooks, Watters, Becton, Dansby, Fisher, Gipp (Rockne), Beuerlein, Mirer, Jackson, Kiel, Guglielmi (Leahy), MacAfee, Mayes, Bown, Rossum, Ismail, Hunter, Bradley, Crable, Restic, Hentrich, Sanson, Browner, Battle, Goolsby, Grant, Walton, Duff, etc, etc. Weis may have played more freshmen early than any ND coach - out of necessity.

When the NCAA has allowed Freshman to play ND coaches have played them at last since 1900, Red Salmon. As usual they were primarily skill players not lineman who need more time to develop.

Contrary to your statement for most on ND's 125 seasons the administration didn't allow 5th year players. The philosophy was you get 4 years to get your undergraduate degree. Do it and move on. ND is unique that you have to be approved by a Faculty Committee to get a 5th year in Graduate School. That's why the term Red-shirt is inappropriate at ND. To a coach that meant if you didn't play 'em you might not get 4 years as there was no academic guarantee that even diploma holding players would be allowed back.

Actually anything prior to the 1972 season would have been special situations for "freshman" to play. So BGIF it was 1972 i was referring to......

Put that in your pipe and smoke it....

Nothing special about it. Freshman were eligible to play at various times in other decades before '72 (I referenced a number of players from different eras by their coach, Rockne, Leahy. The list is far from complete). The eligibility rules have changed a number of times over 125 years.

Generally a half dozen or so freshman get PT. Some years it doubles. It varies more upon need (thin upper classes quantity and/or quality) than freshman talent and readiness.

With out a doubt. I was actually speaking in general terms as in it was very common for freshman players to take a redshirt freshman season. Nothing to get serious or worked up about.

Wait why am i explaining myself to you? you're 0-3 now.... seems only time you comment is on someone else's statement... enough with the "look at me posts"

0-3??? He was completely right on this thread, and explained himself perfectly. You came out on the short end in this one.

His posts aren't "look at me" either. Dude is a fountain of ND knowledge, and pretty much a legend on this site. No idea why you got so offended by his informing you of the past, but relax...you're taking shots at him instead of just debating the issue.

The 0-3 was between him and i it was a "neg rep" sent to me saying i'm 0-2 to him... See and this is why i find this amusing.... Let's look at this from my perspective.

I made the most vague, general statement about freshman redshirting in the past.... Fact is it is more common that freshman do redshirt( i didn't state years or even what team i was talking about, once again a VERY GENERAL STATEMENT).... So along comes BGIF who takes a insignificant general comment and spews his knowledge (kudos for being so smart) out at it as if i was stating hard evidence... Which is quite arrogant and pompous to do towards someone. I appreciate how much knowledge he has but to simply go and try to "ONE UP" someone when the initial statement was in GENERAL terms is just ridiculous.

Once again when you quote someone on sites use caution because you are speaking to them directly....

I get NDinLA.... I respect BGIF.... his approach is a little off sometimes.... I think both of you are good people, and big assets to this site....
