Can ND hang on to both the #1 and #2 TE's in the '20 class over the next 14 months?

If Long stays, yes. Might get more difficult if he doesn't. Probably important to note that both these guys were highly ranked when they committed. I don't think there has been a dramatic change in those ranking since then. Pretty sure they've always been in the 1-3 range.

I want them to get greedy and get the superfreak athlete/TE Arik Gilbert to go with Bauman and Mayer just because.

That's not being greedy cuz Lea's gonna swipe him from you if ya land him..

You wanna be greedy, Get Mark Redman. He's possibly the most underrated class of '20 prospect and already Troy Niklas 2.0. Not sure if he'll be a HOF TE or just a Pro Bowl OT. He's probably just waiting on Stanford at this point though.

Take all of them, let Mayer play LB or DE, then put him on offense for goalline packages with the other three guys.

He looked pretty damn good on defense this year. He's just an warrior on the football field. However, I thought I remembering him giving a pretty definitive statement about wanting to play TE at college.

Hear a lot of this. Where there is smoke...???

Not any legitimately, at least not among the NKY coaches and players that know him. When he first popped on the radar as a freshman, he was playing DE more than TE and doing it way better. Based on that initial position listing, where he was an early 4-star guy, and the fact that he's got the frame and athleticism to play several positions, it's easy to speculate.

He's got the motor you want from your MLB or DE. He'd probably only be a two-down player at MLB, though, so he needs to be playing offense where he's in-line on first down and destroying DB's on second and third down.

I think we have 2 and 3 don't we? I think Rivals has this kid from Vegas as a 5*. He looks like a Transformer.

I was going via 247 composite, which has Mayer 1 and Bauman 2, but maybe I misread the updates

MIA,

You wanna start a website?

I wish. Unfortunately my time posting and writing is coming to an end in a few short months. 2020 will likely be the last one I follow so closely. Grad school and work combo is gonna start soon

This kid is so underrated by the services. I don’t understand how he is not a consensus top 150 prospect.

Because it's not going to generate as many clicks when the #1 and #2 TEs are already committed? That's my guess.

So they had him tested correctly and then dropped him because they are dumb.

If you watch his film vs others in the top 10 they are all faster than him, BUT they are all smaller than him. Most of them outside Mayer are around 6'3 ish and weigh almost 20 lbs. less. This kid is a legit 6'5, 240. He is not as athletic as the others but in their film, none of them block either. The rankings are baffling. I bet they just ranked on athleticism instead of film.

I have to agree with this. In their breakdown of the new 5 stars, they talked about TE and had this to say about a guy ahead of Mayer that didn't really camp:
. This year is a good year to shake us to our senses on tight end value because there are a bunch of good ones. We’ve moved Arik Gilbert (16) and Darnell Washington (20) from athlete to tight end designations while Jalin Conyers (45) and Theo Johnson (75) have made big rankings jumps into the top 100. They join Notre Dame pledge Michael Mayer (72) to put five tight ends in the Top100. Should that stand, it'd be the most top-100 tight ends in our rankings since 2011.

Conyers continues to be a relative unknown given his small-town background and lack of camp exposure, but his athleticism translates. The more we learn about him, the more we believe in him as a rare talent, particularly as we elevate the entire tight end group. Johnson made a big jump up into the Top100 after testing really well at The Opening Finals and putting together an outstanding pass-catching show. We believe in him as a major mismatch and he lands three spots behind Mayer.

That sounds like a pretty weak case for #45 in the country.

Inline TE's are becoming irrelevant in recruiting. 10 years ago Michael Mayer is a 5 Star Talent.

I just looked at 247's TE rankings and guys who I had on the board 18 months ago... who didn't have profiles - have now pushed Bauman down to "3* status" and are 4*'s. 247, with all of their resources are slow AF and when they do get around to rating the guys and have no rhyme or reason on who they bust down if they don't go to their camps or camps they are covering.

Also, how do you throw a QB/WR/OLB in as the #1 TE when you have Mayer, Gilbert and Henderson in the class and all just balled out at The Opening??? He's NEVER played TE. He's an ATH that is best suited to play 3-4 OLB / Drop and next the Eifert WR role because there is NO true TE in his future. At this point Conyers is a less athletic Chase Claypool.

I could not ask for a better TE combo for ND than Mayer and Bauman.

Even funnier, he has literally not played a snap of padded football between when he was #150 overall in their rankings and their #3 TE to now. I think he did one 7on7 tournament at Rutgers where he was the top performer.

I understand if you want to bump people up based on camp performances, etc. but moving people down when they haven't given you any new information? That's incredibly suspect. 247's rating system has been wonky ever since they started trying to measure players by "pro potential."

Totally agree. Think Major Applewhite or Troy Smith. Or "Dexter Williams is not fast."

This is by no means perfect, but it should be something like:

5 star = projected first team all American level talent (about 25 kids)
high 4 star = all conference talent
4 star = watch list talent/ 2-3 year Power 5 starter
high 3 star = Potential Power 5 starter
3 star = expected Power 5 contributor
