That’s why Mitchell Melton could be an important prospect for the Irish – a 6-foot-4, 225-pound athlete from a quality prep school program in Olney (Md.) Good Counsel, the school that produced Cam Hart and Sam Mustipher.

Although listed as an outside linebacker, Melton plays a role similar to the drop end position. And if you take a close look at his junior film, you’ll see an athlete who can fit that spot in South Bend.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Irish can gain traction with Melton. Adding an offer just a few days ago, he doesn’t yet have a visit lined up. But it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Melton turn his attention to the Irish in the future.

Talent: As it relates to the drop end position, Melton has what’s required to compete. His cover skills are there, able to flip his hips and use his rangy talent to cover ground quickly. And off the edge, he shows the makings of a solid pass rusher.

Awfully quiet visit.

Hard to sell 6-4 after this picture.

I really like Melton, would be really happy to add him to this class.

I like Melton as well, not sure he has a tremendous upside at Drop but I think he's a good defender (position flex) to add to a roster and worry about that later.

In his film he does rush the passer a lot. Does anyone know what position ND sees him at? I did see some film of him in coverage. If he can cover Buck may be a good fit for him He is too big for Rover it seems.

He’s being recruited at Drop. But, I would agree, I could see him as an ILB if he could t play Drop.

Visited Michigan on the same swing as ND and has already booked an OV with UM.

Hopefully when the UA contract expires, ND hooks up with Jordan Brands. That's got to be the reason every kid wants to go Ann Arbor.

My only concern about him playing drop is that I dont think he is tall or.long enough. Also there are still better drops available.

Not sure who Wiltfong had his CB on before but he went ? this morning. Still an OSU CB from one of their analysts. ISD says it's ND/Mich which seems to be what the eastcoast reporting suggests.

In this week.

Screw positional flexibility this one time. I hope it falls apart and Simon gets his spot.

There, I said it. Sometimes ya just gotta let the fanboi speak.

I didn't realize Melton and Simon were competing for the same spot.

Yes, last weekend. Will OV to OSU and UM, then decide on July 3rd.

What do you guys think of this guy? He is low rated but has a few good offers. I don't know what to think about hin at Drop. He seems like a fine athlete but he barely plays WDE in his film. It's a lot of off line backer/nickel. And when he does rush it's often a free rush.

Has he been to camps? Any idea how he fared? I like his film, definitely am not in love with it though.

I like him. Quick hands, strong punch, looks like a reliable tackler, good instincts on where the ball is going. He already has enough pass coverage skills so he would really just have to work on more rush moves and adding some bulk. He isn't the flashiest on film, but that just means he isn't one of those guys that peaked physically as a junior and is just dominating physically inferior competition.

I saw some clips of him smokin guys while lining up at WR at some camp. Maybe a Rivals camp. So obviously a very good Ath & a good frame and length to grow into that LB/DE type drop. Raw, but has all the tools and we do not need him to play anytime soon. I’d definitely take this kid!

Fine if we pass. Fine if we get him. I don't see a future starter, not the way we're recruiting DE.
