Well, how in the holy hell did Jonathan Pigskin win it then? Integrity to that kid lies at the bottom of a bottle.

Not disagreeing, but the absolute worst was Ohio State's Troy Smith in 2006:

Troy Smith was suspended in late 2004 for accepting money from a booster. He did not play in the '04 bowl game or the 2005 season opener.

Then he won the Heisman in 2006? Integrity, my arse!

So why would they have a reason to intentionally manipulate the vote? What possible benefit would there be?

Because they want a player to win it who has better highlights for sportscenter and/or is attached to a team with a bigger fanbase.

How many Navy games does ESPN broadcast or even games of their conference?

Who's the SEC's biggest cheerleader in sports media?

I really hope people don't take anything ESPN says or does seriously anymore.

Check out ESPN's hamfisted attempt to explain this one:

No conspiracy in Heisman House balloting - Public Editor- ESPN

*One comment explained the whole story perfectly: "It sounds more like they are trying to convince themselves instead of everyone else."

Perfectly reasonable explanation. Reynolds was one of four players removed that week. No conspiracy here.

Whether or not using the ESPN "experts" poll to populate the online ballot is the best way to do it is another question. My opinion is it's not (why limit it?), but it's one of 920+ votes cast for the Heisman each year and has no bearing on who wins the award.

Seems pretty silly to claim a conspiracy here.

Unless I'm missing something, he set his NCAA touchdown record by breaking a mark set by someone from Wisconsin, hardly a national irrelevant program. Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne, Cedric Benson, Eric Crouch, Tony Dorsett were among the names he passed this year on his way to the rushing TD record, unless you mean a different record I'm not seeing?

Also worth noting Reynolds vs. Notre Dame (3 games): 55 att. 210 yards, 3 TDs rushing; 14-of-28 passing, 222 yards, 3 TDs/1 INT. 422 yards and 6 TDs in 3 games, and Navy scored 97 points in the games.

I agree he's nowhere near the Heisman winner, but do I think he's a top 5 player in college football this year? Call me a fool, but I do.

How is he a Top 5 player in college football when he's not the best QB in his own conference? Is Memphis's QB a Top 5 player as well?

Reynolds getting this much love is one of the crazier things I've ever seen in college football. Where was the love for Josh Cribbs when he was playing at my alma mater? He played at a mid-major, ran the ball really well and threw it better than Reynolds.

Really productive players graduate every year and never get this much love. Is this just because "America"? It's hard to take anything he did *this* seriously when he wasn't doing it every week against competition that matters, and to say he'd be anywhere near this productive if he played at the highest level is unfair to people who actually did make their marks in the SEC, Big Ten or Pac-12. It's not his fault, but he doesn't deserve to get graded on a curve either.

Maybe the Internet can kickstart money to make their own lifetime achievement award for the kid or something.

Reynolds was Offensive Player of the Year in his conference. Are we to believe all the coaches simply voted that for him because 'America' ... guess I'm not buying that seeing how selfish most D1 coaches are. Also, I didn't see Josh Cribbs on very good teams that were going 10-2 and ranked in the Top 25 — or anywhere near productive reaching the end zone when he was at Kent State compared to Reynolds, so that's a pretty simple answer.

You continue to say he wasn't doing it every week against competition that matters. Were you up in arms when Steve McNair was a Heisman finalist at Alcorn State then? Randy Moss at Marshall? Colt Brennan at Hawaii.? None of those players faced weekly competition like Navy did in the American this year (Houston, Memphis, South Florida), along with Notre Dame and soon Pitt. The precedent was there is my only point and there are a few other guys I could name (Chad Pennington was also invited to ceremony I think without playing in a major conference).

Also I see Reynolds did finish 5th last night, which I think is completely fair.
