"Pyne as overlooked 3-star who breaks out and proves his doubters wrong" is a very romantic headline, especially after Rees and Book, but the coaching staff isn't choosing starters based on high school recruit rankings. They know exactly what Drew brings to the table, both good and bad, and their refusal to put him in at several key points last season told me all I need to know.

Except they did put him in during key moments last season. When Coan got knocked out during Wisconsin it was Pyne that came in to finish the game and he balled out. When Coan and Buchner Buckner struggled against Cinci it was Pyne that played the Rees role and took over. During the Bye they then shored up the OL and Coan was able to hang in the pocket again and do very well, Pyne wasn't needed again. Just sayin'...put some respect on his name!

Wasn’t Buchner hurt going into the Wisconsin game? And he was the third QB to play versus UC? Not sure that really counters the key usage point

Maybe, I don't remember, but the fact remains Coan and Tyler both got pulled for Pyne against Cinci. He did well despite the OL. If Austin doesn't drop a gimme we probably pull out a win in that one behind Pyne.

He did not play well versus UC. He played better than Coan.

He played well enough to win. Coan and Tyler both threw INTs. Pyne scored our only two TDs. If he plays the 1st half we probably win. Austin was a non-factor all game and had a crucial easy drop as we were getting momentum back and starting to score. It's one reason I wasn't very torn up to see him declare, he struggled to get open in tight coverages and was too inconsistent.

That’s a lot of assumption to say we probably win if he plays the first half. Is UC playing softer than normal coverage in the first half when they aren’t sitting on a lead because Pyne is in not Coan? Does Tyree not fumble anymore because Pyne is playing? Was Pyne responsible for Drew White’s fumble recovery that put us at the UC 30? He played better than Coan and Buchner, that doesn’t equal playing well nor does it counter Whiskeys original point.

They played him when Buchner was hurt against Wiscy, and in the 2nd half against Cincy where he played poorly. They gave him the opportunity to win the job in practice, and Coan was the best guy so they stuck with him. They found snaps for Buchner because he's a dynamic athlete, and the future of the QB position at ND.

They would have feared the Pyne, and yet they would have been helpless to his power.
Does Tyree not fumble anymore because Pyne is playing?
No. Tyree balls out for Drew.
Was Pyne responsible for Drew White’s fumble recovery that put us at the UC 30?
That was just as much Pyne's recovery.

True on the first count. False on the rest.

Our WRs and OL were garbage, can't put that on Pyne. If Mayer wasn't balling out with a bum pelvis that game could have been ugly. Not saying he put on a Heisman level performance, but Drew wasn't careless with the football. He's also not responsible for Austin leaving his hands at home.

He was mediocre on a day where our other QBs were bad. They gave him his shot during the following week, and then he never saw the field again. Pretty obvious what that says lol.

It says that we shored up our OL in the Bye week so Coan could actually do his job. Great pocket passer, but Drew was able to handle the leaky OL better at the beginning of the season.

If he was better able to handle the OL, they would've named him the starting QB from the beginning lol. They didn't because he wasn't better than Coan, and he isn't nearly as dynamic as Buchner.
