Saw him at practice today. He was hip to hip with Julian Love throughout practice. Julian seemed to be talking technique and basics with him while practice was going on. Miles boykin then joined and chatted him up for awhile. Seemed to be engaged and personable with both of them.

Absolute shitty weather in South bend today though hope that doesn't scare him away.

If one day of shitty weather scares him away, it's honestly for the best. We might get one full season before a transfer.

On the flip side, if he saw the weather and still has interest then an ND game day should be icing on the cake.

Rivals, ISD, and 247 updates. In his top 3 according to him. Gonna be a tough pull from the west coast, but he's a gem of a recruit so worth all of the effort.

Says all the right things. Extremely complimentary of Lyght and how he’s impacted him thus far. With that said, hard for me to get optimistic at this point.

Reading between the lines, I think we have a legitimate shot to land him. He's said no to Alabama and Clemson, so that tells me he's interested in more than just being on a title contending team.

I read a lot of OC/LA/SD local stuff that's non-247/Rivals and having the Rams back AND good might prove to be that last piece that enables ND to land guys like Clark Phillips. You can't read an article that doesn't list Former Rams All Pro Todd Lyght. The ability to run him, LA native Del Alexander and Brian Polian through town is a strong package, especially when the Irish are winning and the locals are down.

I would love to send today's Irish program back to 2017 to recruit Thomas Graham, Elijah Hicks & Elijah Gates... not to mention have another shot at Tre Norwood.

BTW, don't ever look at the 2017 CB Offer/Commit/Decommit list if you value your sanity.

Ugh I'd rather go up against USC or someone out west. They got a good track record of putting dudes in the league

Four-Star DB Clark Phillips Cuts His List to Five
By GREG BIGGINS

La Habra (Calif.) defensive back Clark Phillips cut his list of schools down to five earlier today.

Phillips cut his list of schools down to 12 and made another cut earlier tonight. He now has five schools on his short list and is hoping to make a summer decision.

“My final five are Notre Dame, Cal, Oregon, Ohio State and UCLA,” Phillips said. “I had some great option but these are the five I felt most comfortable with. I’m close with all five coaching staff and all five fit my style of play and where I think I can get developed the best.”

Phillips has already visited all five programs and gave a quick thought on what stands out about each program.

Notre Dame- “I visited not too long ago and loved it. I love the overall campus feel and the environment there. It’s a prestigious school not just football wise but academically and I really like the coaching staff and have a great relationship with coach (Todd) Lyght (DB coach).”

Cal- “I was just at Cal this past weekend and I really like the coaches and the players on the team. I fit in really well with those guys and the more I talk with them, the more comfortable I feel. Coach Wilcox and GA (Gerald Alexander) are great guys and great coaches our relationship just keeps getting better and better. I like the defensive a lot as well and they love my style of play and how well I fit in.”

Oregon- “I’m very close with Donte Williams and we have been talking for a long time now. I have a lot of respect for Donte as a coach and feel he can develop me and help me get to the next level. He said he loves the way I play and they see an opportunity for me to step in and play right away. I’ve been up to Oregon multiple times and I really fit in well there and have a great comfort level with what they’re trying to do and what they’re building.”

Ohio State- “That’s a special program and I love how they develop defensive backs and get them to the next level. The moment Coach Hafley got to Ohio State, he hit me up immediately and let me know what a big priority I was for them. Coach Day did that as well, he made a point to reach out when he got the job and tell me how well I fit in and spelled out how well I fit with their defense. He said I could make some noise there in year one and they want to build something special with me being a big focal point. They see me moving all around, playing corner and nickel and having a Tyrann Mathieu type impact on the defense.”

UCLA- “UCLA is doing some very nice things on the low key and I really like what I’ve seen on my visits there. They’re the one school who wasn’t in my initial top 12 but they have really picked things up and I talk regularly with Coach Rhoads and coach Kelly. My parents are very comfortable with the school and the coaches and I’ve talked to some of the players, Darnay Holmes and William Nimmo, and they really love it there and have told me some great things about where the program is going. UCLA is home for me, my mom went to school there and I think there’s a great opportunity to get in and play right away as well.”

Phillips said he plans to officially visit all five schools but doesn’t have any dates just yet.

“My plan is to take three visits this spring and summer and then hopefully make a late summer decision if I feel good about a school. If not, I’ll wait and take the last two, that’s all up in the air right now. Ohio State, Notre Dame and Cal are the three schools I know I want to visit this spring and then we’ll go from there.

“I’m an early graduate so I know I have some time but also know I don’t have a ton of time. I would love to make my decision and get it out of the way before my senior year so I can focus on school and football but like I said, I’m still going to play that by ear and just see how I feel.”

a final five that is really a final 3 ? sounds like it. Maybe just 2 since Cal may be getting a temporary post visit bump.

Cal - 6h27m away
Oregon - FAR
Notre Dame - FAR
Ohio State - FAR

Offered
UCLA - 9/23/17
Oregon - 2/27/18
Notre Dame - 9/9/18
Cal - 1/15/19
Ohio State - 1/24/19

Now that the basis is set. I think ND has a great chance to land Clark Phillips III. He's got a great head on his shoulders as seen by his interviews that you can look up on twitter. I recommend giving this youtube video a viewing...

I think Phillips would be a great fit at Notre Dame and I hope he chooses ND. Having said that, UCLA has been on him for a long time (although apparently the new staff took over and wasn't showing him a lot of love initially as seen by the fact that they didn't make his top 12). He mentioned wanting to take 3 official visits in the spring and summer to Cal, Ohio State, and Notre Dame and I think it really comes down to Ohio State or Notre Dame.

Oh and his mother went to UCLA, just as an FYI.

For a SoCal kid I'd worry more about UCLA than Cal, especially if his mom went there. But reading all that, if Bruins are really in 4th/5th, and he's willing to leave the nest, I kind of like our odds here.

I think it is OSU vs. ND. Idk who leads out of that group but I think they’ll likely both get summer visits and we’ll see who comes out on top. I’m confident Brian Kelly, Brian Polian, Todd Lyght, and Clark Lea can come out on top with this recruitment.

What's the context here?

Landing a 5* from Cali from the defensive side of the ball with no ties to ND. I'm not talking about the Houston Griffins from Chicago or the Kyle Hamilton who the staffed pegged as a top target well before he was a 5*. A back 7 player with no ties to ND picking ND over OSU, LSU, Oregon just doesn't happen. That was my point

I think this is a Stanford/USC/UCLA kid to be honest but USC didn’t recruit him or offer him for a long time which is an issue maybe for him, Stanford never came by with an offer for whatever reason, and UCLA is crap so that might be the perfect storm for him to come east. If he wasn’t big time into academics then maybe he’s Oregon-bound and I’m surprised Washington hasn’t made moves but seems like this is a winnable recruitment to me. It is recruiting so you never know if USC comes in late, Stanford pops up, or he just chooses a different school in his top 5 but ND is the better of the academic institutions and I think OSU vs ND for a west coast recruit is a closer battle than people think (sorry about Gee Scott Jr).

I think it's either UCLA or OSU. I'll point to his comments about Oregon and OSU and the ability to help him get to the next level (which OSU has a great track record of doing) and to the one time he mentioned playing at home, where his mom went to school (UCLA). My $.02

Hope I'm wrong.
