I kind of like them. Also, they have the monogram on the sleeves and there is gold outline on the numbers for the white jerseys. Couldn't tell if they are on the blue jerseys.

Get ready for Kelly to announce Crist the starter earlier than expected. He is giving nuggets each day that suggest such. BK knows that Rees is consistent, but has a low ceiling and NO running ability. Crist actually had several nice runs last year. He even had a nice run on the play he got hurt. Expect Hendrix to be number 2 at some point this year.

That's exactly what it means, under no circumstance does a future QB return punts. It has never happened at a major college program to my knowledge.

I'm not saying I don't think Golson has a chance to be great, all I'm saying is if Kelly has him returning kicks, he clearly doesn't.

Whoa, slow down there Corey. How old are you? Not bagging on your age, the reason I'm asking is that you sound very young to be saying this, because you could not be more wrong here. Future QBs playing special teams and other positions most certainly has happened at the college level...a lot.

In college, you get your best athletes on the field. When your 3rd string QB (possibly 4th string QB) is an incredible athlete, you certainly can get him reps at QB while also putting him on the field in other spots.

Do you remember Jarious Jackson? As a soph at ND, he wasn;t the starting QB. He got some time at QB, but he played all 13 games on special teams, including the punt return team.

Just last year at Texas A&M, Ryan Tannehill lost the QB battle and was second string. But he was too good of an athlete to sit on the bench, so he became their starting WR while also being the backup QB. When the starting QB threw about 1000 too many picks, in stepped Tannehill and he promptly lead the team to a great season, breaking many records and beating #11 Oklahoma along the way.

A few years ago, I remember a QB named "R.J." Archer who didn't win the starting QB job. so he returned punts and played WR. His senior year, he finally won the QB job.

There are TONS of examples out there; this is nowhere near unprecedented. Not saying I agree with it, just sayin, that's a couple of pretty ridiculous statements that you made in that post...

I think were getting a litte ahead of ourselves. This is only the first practice of fall camp . If Golson is never able to play QB but turns into our Randall Cobb ill still be very happy. To me, nothing that is said in the first 3 hours of practice should be taken as fact. I still think Golson rredshirts this year and pushes for PT hard next year. Just my opinion

Little "freudian blurts" that i caught from Coach in the post-practice press conference:
a]. Crist was the only QB mentioned.

b]. Kick returners were broken into two categories by Kelly---the "sure-hand guys" and the guys who might make something happen. Kelly CLEARLY values the "sure-hand guys", and will go there rather than take risks if his "guy who might make something happen" isn't nearly perfect fielding the ball. Kelly said "we might have to tackle those guys" in practice. Obviously he wants to find out who can catch knowing that they might well get their butt handed to them shortly. [this is why Goodman was our returner last year, and may be again --- Coach doesn't trust certain other guys with ball security].

The "good hands guys" were Goodman, HSmith, and Toma, named. The others were Riddick, named like a shot, and Floyd, sounding unsure, and, I believe, Golson and Cam McDaniel. McDaniel was specifically commented upon as a punt returner.

c]. Freshmen-in-condition and impressive were mentioned. Tuitt's name came out quickly [probably as to impressive, since he was talking about the morning physical drills not the filmed practice session.] Lynch was mentioned immediately thereafter, and that's part of them being psychologically connected-at-the-hip in everyone's mind, even the staff. Grace was mentioned in the freshman impressive group.

d]. Riddick continues to be featured in Kelly's remarks as a playmaker, sometimes being mentioned as "Riddick and Floyd" as if he sees him in Big Mike's class.

e]. The "third WR" was stated to be a TJJones/Goodman competition, pretty clearly. Goodman haters apparently will need to get used to Coach disagreeing with them.

That's what I heard.

I learned something today, one of the many reasons I come to this site. I would argue that all of the players you listed where more products of the situation than great quarterbacks. I understand the thought process of getting your best athletes on the field, but only when you lack athletes. Which is clearly not the case at ND. The bottom line is if you think a player can be a future starter at quarterback it is counter productive to have him return punts. That is just my humble opinion.

For what it's worth I'm 28. ;)

I don't doubt that Crist will be the starter, based on the fact that Kelly mentions Crist first each time he is asked about the quaterbacks. But I don't think that Dayne's running ability is much of a factor. When asked about Crist's recovery during the presser yesterday, Kelly responded that he didn't need Dayne to be able to run the ball, just that he had to be recovered enough to have the escapability to extend plays.

I listened to the media cut of Kelly talking about the punt returner position, in my opinion, he was just eluding to the fact that the PR position is wide open, and that they need to improve, and be more consistent, and whoever is athletic enough to make that happen will play. I don't think he was actually implying that we'll see Gholson or Floyd back there, just that we need a dynamic/athletic talent to revamp our inconsistent play

I just hope whoever it is takes their play to the next level, and can keep up with the progression of the offense. As Kelly said, we don't have the luxury of playing creampuffs for the first 3 weeks, the learning curve will be tight. I don't know when it will be this year, but I can't wait for Kelly's offense to unleash hell, especially with that SEC defense being built. Come get it bama.

No current starting QB would be returning punts or kicks, but there is no reason that a guy that could be the starting QB 2-3 years down the road couldn't. I don't see how being a future starter at QB and returning kicks in the present have anything to do with each other.

I think possibly giving him the opportunity to return kicks could toughen him up, help with vision, and keep him at ND so he doesn't transfer. Not sure what could be up in the air though.

@braxtoncave: Just beat Floyd in an intense battle of pop a shot basketball.. And now he must call me "Master" for the entirety of camp..

If he can play pop a shot he can return punts.

I doubt that Golson returns punts. I think Kelly was making a comment on how wide open the battle for return jobs was....Best player to an athletic freshmen qb as well as he has options. Personally, if Golson/Floyd/Riddick/Toma/Heggie/Hounshell return punts theres a reason, and im down with coach kelly.


with that said i would hate to see golson burn a redshirt for returns lol
