I thought we were done with TE in 2019, but here we go.

https://247sports.com/college/notre...ton-Strange-talks-Notre-Dame-offer-119149905/

Tight end Brenton Strange is on the rise.

Last week, Notre Dame was in touch with the three-star West Virginia prospect who had picked up six offers over the previous week after flashing top-end skills at recent camps, particularly as a receiving threat. Among those offers were North Carolina and Wake Forest.

Adding to the intrigue of the 6-foot-5, 210-pound prospect, Strange impressed at an Ohio State camp last Tuesday, leaving Columbus with a Buckeyes offer.

Shortly after, Strange told Irish Illustrated that he’d be visiting Notre Dame on the following Monday.

Of course, he left South Bend with an offer.

Strange’s overall experience at Notre Dame on Monday put the Irish at the “top of the list,” according to the Parkersburg High School star.

“Them telling me what the degree can do for me after football, what the degree does after college or the NFL (impressed me),” Strange said. “What the Notre Dame degree can do for me in life.

“It’s a very good school. Like I said, the degree and their graduation rate (is what impresses the most), and they’re always a winning team.”

Meeting with Notre Dame’s tight ends coach and offensive coordinator Chip Long enlightened Strange to the history of success at the tight end position in South Bend, along with Long’s history of focusing on the tight end position in his offense.

“He seemed like a really good coach,” Strange said. “He showed me some film and how he’s always used the tight ends. He’s always gotten the ball to them.

“They said that they liked that I’m very athletic and that I can move well in space and that I high-point the ball well.”

Strange was first contacted by Bill Rees, which caught his attention as the three-star prospect is specifically looking into earning a quality education. He met both Rees and Matt Balis during his visit on Monday, leaving South Bend impressed with the Irish staff.

Prior to the visit, Irish Illustrated reached out to Parkersburg head coach Mike Byus, who gushed about his star two-way player regarding his strength on and off the field.

“It seems like (interest) is growing every day,” coach Byus told Irish Illustrated recently. “I don’t know why he wouldn’t do well anywhere. He works hard, he’s a great kid. He’s just one of those kids with a great work ethic. He has a 3.5 GPA. There’s no skeletons in his closet. He’s just a wonderful young man. I enjoy working with him every single day.”

In 2017, Strange racked up 59 catches for 938 yards and 11 touchdowns. At the outside linebacker position, he posted 95 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, two QB hurries, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles.

Going forward, Strange doesn’t have additional visit plans lined up, but plans to return for an official visit to Notre Dame which will likely take place this fall.

Aside from the above-mentioned offers – North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Wake Forest – Cincinnati, Maryland, Purdue, and Rutgers represent his additional Power Five Conference offers.

Are the behind the paywall analysts calling him a TE, a Flex or a WR? To me, he's currently a WR with Flex potential. Right now he looks more polished than Chase Claypool did as a Jr.

Yeah I agree. I also.like Erik All better. This kid needs to add weight to be a true TE

All is a skinny TE. He even lines up attached. Has an edge to his blocking too, but with the current roster and what's committed/available in '20, they need to skip inline TE this class.

Lukas Ungar looks like Grant Calcaterra 2.0

Are they gonna take more than 2 TEs next year?

More polished than Claypool right now?

You think this guy has a chance to come in and start, and probably lead the time in receiving?

Unless Jude Wolfe, Ethan Rae, or Hunter Henry change their minds about ND then move on to 2020. There are about 8 or so of the top 10 TE’s right now that look like they could be fits at ND and could have interest. Better to load up on that than take some up and comer who might see the field after several years of weight room polish.

I'd be ok with taking 3 TEs in 2020 but realistically that third commit would have to be good with redshirting

I think you need to try to get one in 2019 just to stagger the classes properly.

Relying on 3 TE's in the 2020 class is poor roster management, especially if the third is a redshirt project like any of the guys you might grab late in '19.

Poor grammar on my part. More like...

ND can still grab an ND level TE in this class.

They could get one of Thomas Gordon, Kyle Bilodeau or Hayden Rucci to flip.

Gordon was an 'ND is my dream school kid' that went to Catholic school in Houston and committed to Northwestern which is a kid crying out for ND to save him.

Bilodeau is the most athletic true TE in this class and plays at ND friendly Woodberry Forest. Committed to Purdue last week. How this kid ended up at Purdue is beyond me. He's a legit 4.6 -> 4.7 TE.

Rucci is a PA kid committed to Wiscy, son of Patriot Todd Rucci.

If they want a good prospect who plays the game like an old school TE, they should take a look at 3* Nickolas Ognenovic from Cardinal Gibbons in FL. 6-6/235. Perfect demographic fit and willing to go north, looking at Pitt and KY

Lastly, ND has been following Bishop Hartley's Jordan Kirkbride for a long time. I like his film. Really surprised he hasn't blown up more. 6-6/230 and good running/catching/blocking film. Maybe being in Columbus scares programs away.

Apologies, I reread your post and should have picked that up. Agreed on that as well. Claypool was very unpolished as a jr and sr.

I say sign him up. There was another similarly ranked 3 star TE that we took ten years ago that worked out pretty well. Not saying he's at that level, but it never hurts having 6'5 guys to throw to.

Eifert actually lined up attached sometimes in HS. He was a true Flex in HS and became a WR in college with a TE label.

Strange's HS film is no different than ND's current crop of stretch WR's Boykin/Claypool/Jones

Would love to have this guy if he is Eifert like.... But if not, I'm good with passing on TE given we already have 2 for 2020.

Last ND scholarship player from WV?

Wasn't it Julius Jones?

Jones played college football at the University of Notre Dame from 1999–2001 and 2003. As a freshman, he was a backup, playing mainly on special teams, while leading the team in both kickoff and punt return yardage, he also recorded 146-rushing yards and one touchdown against Navy. As a sophomore, he was a part of a three back rotation that included Tony Fisher and Terrance Howard, which limited him to only three 100 rushing yards games. In 2002, he was suspended from the team because of academic reasons.

In 2003, although he began the season as a backup to Ryan Grant, he became the starter after the fifth game when he set a single-game school record for rushing yards (262) against the University of Pittsburgh.[2] He would also have three 200-yard rushing performances, which is another school record and had one of the best single seasons ever by an Irish running back. He posted 229 carries for 1,268 yards (tied for the fourth-most in school history) and 10 touchdowns. He finished his college career as one of only four running backs in school history to rush for over 3,000 yards. He also set school records for kickoff return yards (1,678), combined kick return yards (2,104) and all-purpose yards (5,372).
