Wherever he goes, I hope he gets an education on par with UVA
This. Assuming he's not the next Dwight Freeny, I hope he gets the most powerful education he can.

if he can’t get a spot at ND, then I’m glad he ended up at Virginia. That’s as good of an academic school as you’ll find in the FBS
UVA getting creative this cycle, a Danish DT and a German ATH and OL.

When your head coach is a Mormon who did this all the time at BYU, I'd guess that this will become more and more common for them.
indeed he recruited rugby players from NZ, Tonga, American Samoa to play football for him at BYU in the past.
5. DL, Jowon Briggs, Cincinnati (Ohio) Walnut Hills- Briggs was part of a dominant Team Ballaholic defensive line. He took reps at both tackle and end and didn’t lose a single one that we saw. He’s a big, strong kid with positional versatility and can play in any scheme. He has strong hands and just bullied opposing offensive lineman today. The Virginia signee is rated the No. 68 player nationally in the 247Sports Composite.
Not that ND had the room in the class, but they passed on Jowon Briggs and looks like he’s gonna be the day 1 starter at UVA at NT. That’s pretty wild. Turns out he’s 6’1” 295 which is pretty small for a NT in terms of height but apparently he’s balling out in camp and picking things up quickly. Hopefully he has a good long career at UVA. He’s a super bright and intelligent young man.
On Tuesday, Virginia Cavaliers sophomore defensive lineman Jowon Briggs entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after starting the first seven games of the season. On Wednesday, UVA defensive coordinator Nick Howell talked about the former 247Sports Composite four-star prospect’s decision and his reaction to the news.
“Yeah, I was surprised and, you know, it took us off guard,” said Howell. “And then, you know, our reaction to it is, we just have to move on with the guys that are here and do our very best.
“Just like any other situation, you know, you just go forward, move on, and continue to do the very best that you possibly can.”
Briggs, the crown-jewel of UVA’s 2019 recruiting class, was second on the team in sacks (4) after starting all seven games this season. The loss of talent aside, Briggs’ exit from the program leaves UVA will have just four healthy defensive linemen that have taken snaps in the first seven games of the season.
Asked if there will be any alterations to the scheme considering the lack of available depth that has taken snaps this season.
“We run the defense that we run and those are the things that we've practiced. So, it's hard to change anything. So, within the schemes that we use, we'll try to put our best people out there to run our schemes. And so it’s just guys have got to step up and new players have got to be in there. And we’ve got to continue to improve at what we do.”
Although not addressed by Howell, Wahoos247 has learned that Ben Smiley is close to returning and could be available this week when UVA faces the Abilene Christian Wildcats. Smiley originally opted out for the season, but changed course and arrived ahead of the season. Smiley played three snaps from scrimmage against Clemson in the second game of the season.
Smiley, however, doesn’t address the nose tackle position, which Briggs has manned, along with defensive end. In the base defense, when Briggs slid out to end, true freshman Jahmeer Carter has filled in. Howell said that he and the UVA staff have a high level of confidence in Carter.
“Jahmeer and yes, confident, very. Jahmeer is a really good football player and has come in and played a lot as a true freshman and played extremely well. He's physical. He moves lateral really well and uses his hands really well.”
In addition to Carter, Howell said that senior defensive end Mandy Alonso, JMU graduate transfer Adeeb Atariwa, and Jordan Redmond could also fill the role.
“So high confidence and Jahmeer. There's other guys that can play nose, you know, Mandy can get over there a little bit. Adeeb can get over there a little bit. [We can] use Jordan Redmond in there a little bit. So there's other guys that can play that position as well.”
UVA kicks off against Abilene Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised by Regional Sports Networks.
