Weird. I figured the staff wouldn't need to leave the Midwest for their DTs in 2019

Perhaps some of the midwest guys are taking longer than expected, and this is the start of contingency offers?

Or perhaps this guy is a late-bloomer (nice offer list), and the staff has reevaluated a bunch of guys (seemingly the entire class of '19).

OR perhaps this is how they start putting pressure on the first wave of guys?

Jamie at ISD just posted in his 6 Thoughts on a Thursday that he thinks Josh is an elite talent. Must be why the staff offered

Love the offer. He looks like the prototype 3-4 NT, which I think would be great for the future. Gives us some flexibility along the defensive front.

It's so hard to get the prototypical NT for a 3-4 in college consistently. Not just one, but you'll need a second decent backup as well. Granted, recruiting by Diaco fell off and his measurement requirements were too much to overcome at times, it was still a task. Remember Calabrese having to play NT against Stanford? I doubt it would get that bad, but still. I think a 4-2-5 look provides us with enough flexibility, PLUS we could easily shift into an odd front with an athletic DE standing up.

My post wasn't advocating a change back to a 3-4 base. But I like the idea of having a guy who could play that position, at a high level, which gives the DC options based on opponents. Being able to be multiple with your fronts is important, IMO.

I can agree with that. He fits that bill, definitely.

Small update.

Composite 4-star now, offered by Bama today. Just one day after announcing his top 8 of Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Penn State, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Tennessee and NC State.

Interesting recruitment to watch.

I'd feel better with a 6-5/310+ DT on the roster. After next year, it's a group made up of a lot of 6-1 & 6-2 guys and no one's 6-4.

Pretty interesting, in that Elko/Lea clearly covet/coveted length. But it hasn't translated into DL recruiting, at this point. Now, I think that Lacey, Spears, Ademilola, etc. can play. But I would agree that I'd like to see some more length at DT and DE.
