NDCrusader, I recall a CIF rule, at least in the 90's, that did not allow kids to play varsity in 9th grade unless they were a certain age. My buddies were only allowed to play JV because of age. Even though they were easily the best QB and WR at our school. Were able to be pulled up for the playoffs though. I would think this is why he was "held back". Clausen was also "held back". I know because my other buddy is his cousin and Clausens dad coached at my school and Jimmy and the other brothers were ball boys during my freshman year before they headed out to La Canada for their dad to coach.

Freshman have to be 14 (at some point, not sure if that means Game 1, first practice or first day of school) to play in California.

I think he got held back to get the added physical maturity and to wait for the QB spot to open up at Mater Dei where his Dad was set on sending him. Had he gone in as a 14 y/o true freshman, he would have had to beat out Sr. Jack Lowery who is now at Mizzou.

The Daniels played it right.

If JT is now class of 2018, couldn't he have signed his LOI this week?

Must not be officially graduated or fully through admissions yet. SC probably gonna put on a lil show to make it look like theyre a prestigious academic institution or something.

Nope. If any guy is going to be Drew Brees 2.0, it's this guy. And he's supposedly 6-2 in cleats. Will he be the #1 NFL pick over Trevor Lawrence? I wouldn't bet on that. Trevor Lawrence won't hit his stride until he gets to the league.

Don't sell Daniel's arm short either

The short QB stigma is wearing off. Lil Aaron Rodgers and his juco azz is doing just fine.

well Drew is probably 5'11 and change and he didn't get drafted til the 3rd round I think by the Chargers that year the Chargers traded the #1 pick to the Falcons and the Falcons took Vick #1 and the Chargers took LaDanian Tomlinson with the Falcons' old pick.

I think he'll be a heck of a college QB. Might even wind up being a better college QB than Trevor Lawrence. Look at Baker Mayfield who is barely 6'ft tall, he's a better college QB than Rosen or Darnold, but won't be drafted as high as either of them. That's all I was saying- that JT Daniels has everything but the elite physical tools.

As far as his arm goes, it's pretty good. But it doesn't leap off the screen at you the way Ryan Mallett or Matt Stafford or Josh Rosen did in high school. Or Trevor Lawrence's does. Lawrence is the best HS QB prospect since Matt Stafford imo. Will be interesting to see how he does at Clemson in an offensive system that really probably doesn't truly fit him.

Eeeeeerrrrrrrr 3rd round. He was the 32nd pick. Which was the first pick in the second round back then, but would be the last pick in the first round now 😉

Carted off with a right knee injury. Couldn’t see it well but I’d be surprised if he didn’t tear his ACL. His knee sort of locked up and got bent sideways as he was getting sacked.

Initial reports are that X-rays were negative, but MRI results are still pending. Seems unlikely he that he will play next week against Stanford, but there's plenty of time between now and October 12.

Am Xray will only show broken bones so the MRI is what they need to determine if he tore anything

And the Urban Meyer Era will most likely start next year.

NO POSSIBLE way Helton can duct tape this show together with a 3* freshman QB unless he can sweet talk Jack Sears out of the portal.

Clay Helton said after the game or today that the door is open for Jack Sears to return. I think he’ll be out there against Stanford next weekend.

RS JR Matt Fink
RS SO Jack Sears
FR Kedon Slovis

Kind of surprised they feel that badly about Matt Fink that he’d be QB3 in the last game. He’s very likely to be grad transferring next season but surprised they didn’t redshirt Slovis. He didn’t look convincing except for 1 long pass in the second half.

Kedon should have been their Book. The kid who gets redshirted and never had any expectations of being the starter being sandwiched in between JT, Sears and incoming Bryce Young but fate isn't always a compliant partner.

Kedon can be good. Lets not forget he worked with Kurt Warner everyday of his HS career. But he needed this set of circumstances to happen in 2021 not Game 1 of Freshman year.

What was ASBs statement when he signed with USC? "I'm going somewhere the QB can get me the ball?"

I wanted him because he was such a pitbull on the field but that arrogant quote looks silly in retrospect.

Too bad for Daniels, but maybe the opening that Sears needed.

And many think Sears played better when he was in.

the day before Sears entered the portal USC released a depth chart that had Slovis#2, Fink#3 and Sears #4. They put Slovis in when Daniels went down. Based on this I'd expect Slovis to start even if Sears comes back. I'd be really weird for them to elevate Sears after he quit the team a week ago.

However I can see him getting the nod if Slovis craps the bed.

I have heard that Slovis has really impressed in the 8 months on campus but Jack Sears apparently impressed too during camp. What’s surprising is Sears being placed at #4 on the depth chart behind Fink who reportedly wasn’t amazing or a standout. That’s basically showing Sears the door. Curious how it’ll shake out but I’d bet they ride with Slovis and maybe if he struggles over the next few weeks then they’ll work in Fink or Sears. They really should’ve gotten Sears or Fink ready in this new offense. I know Slovis is impressive but that’s really foolhardy to think this kid can come in and dominate the PAC-12 in his freshman year. I’d have gone Daniels, Sears, Fink and redshirted Slovis and then next season he could’ve been the #2 if Sears and Fink had grad transferred which they’ll likely do anyway after the season.
