Yup, adding another true LB is bottom of the totem pole compared to the other positions they are still actively recruiting for.

Needs:

2 OL
1-2 WR's
1-2 DE's
3 CB's
1 Safety
1 Rover

But likely only 8-10 slots available and even then it will require some major subtraction from current roster.

I think that's everyone who could even sniff a linebacker spot on ND's roster. I think there's definitely two spots to be had in this class. Hopefully they can go after Simon, Lamb, Calvert, and McGrone and tell them first two to commit can have the spots and then just focus on getting better DB's.

I feel like everyone believes we need 4 OL, minimum?

I think the word need gets over used and misused.

ND has 8 safeties on campus, all with at least 2 years eligibility remaining (that does not include Drue, JOK or Morgan). The future at one of the S spots in the '18 class, Allen and then there's a 6-3/210 CB in Vaughn who has best safety body on the roster.

What the team needs is a herd of CB's this class... and 2 of the current safeties to transfer.

Coney is a Junior and Jamir Jones is a sophomore.

The bolded all have 2+ years of eligibility after this season, or when this class will be on campus. That is 9 players for 3 spots. Include Simon and you have 10 for 3.

Vaughn is not and will not be moving to safety. CB all the way.

Of course he's not moving to safety because there's a glut of players there and just 4 other CB's besides him and only one with any real service time.

They don't need another safety this class.

Only one? I think Love and Pride both had quality time last year.

This is the most baffling thing to me about ND recruiting and those that follow it. We say we want to recruit the best players, and then when other schools start recruiting those players, we freak out and assume we won't land them. At no time, giving any thought to the idea that we've actually landed, A LOT of really good players over the years. Ones that other schools wanted. This notion that ND is always a bridesmaid is laughable. Now we could certainly do things differently, not leaving gaps at certain positions, certainly. But I'm not throwing in the towel each time Harbaugh wants a player that ND does as well.

Could McGrone end up at UM, of course. That doesn't signal the demise of ND recruiting. In fact, if it works out that we get Simon and give McGrone, I'd gladly take that.

Well said!

This board freaks out too much about when a kid doesn't commit and visits another school. I've noticed that on 24/7 a lot after a kid visits a school the CB's roll in after that visit for that school. How many times have we seen CB's roll in for a kid after visiting ND and not committing to ND?

Lets face it, after a 4-8 season ND has a nice start to their 2018 class. I like the coaching changes and the pitches they are making to recruits, but I think the outcome on game day will be a make or break decision for recruits.

Looks like he wants to stay close to home. Should be very beneficial for the Irish.

IU is closer. :sigh:

To being relevant?

Problem with IU still remains... they can't figure out how do bounce the fall ball on grass with it's odd shape and that exposed stitching.

... and where's the rim?

Until they win a couple of B1G titles close together and make the playoffs, it will never change.

.... and that's what ND is for. To keep you Corn County kids busy in the fall.

On McGrone
Wiltfong flipped back to UM. Visiting for Michigan's barbecue, and will try to get back to ND one more time prior to the barbecue. I see UM pulling this one out.

Made Kipp Adams/247's Top 2-4.

Positions recap from The Opening Finals: Linebackers

Cameron McGrone (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) — During position drills, McGrone was the most fluid linebacker out there. He was assertive in his movements and displayed great explosiveness coming downhill. At 6-foot-1.5, 215 pounds, McGrone is a well-built prospect who won more reps than he lost in the 1-on-1 competition.

I guess this is karma for Shayne Simon, who was trending as strongly towards Michigan as McGrone was towards us.

Unless Michigan surprises and lands both, in which case lol just fucking kill me.

I don't see Lamb and McGrone playing the same position. Lamb is going end up at around 6-4, 240-250.

Simon and McGrone aren't pegged for the same position either.

I've said from the beginning that what I like about Lamb is his positional flexibility. Could be anything from a Drop on the big end to a Buck if he stayed in the 230's. He runs in the 4.6/4.7's so it's possible.

That said, I think the floors on Simon and McGrone are super high. Too high to pass up for other players.

We likely will not have room for all three regardless of position. I'd take Simon and Lamb if I can only have two. McGrone is only 6-1 and will remain 6-1. Nice player but the other two are better in my book and have better upside.

Don't know enough to decipher who will be better by the end of their college career so I will take whoever wants to be here and put in the effort.
