Sorry if I missed but is he second option behind S Simon or is he being recruited to play ilb?

His offer seemed contingent upon Dallas Gant heading to OSU, so it appears that he's a true OLB in the eyes of the staff.

I don't have a definitive answer but I'd be fairly shocked if he was being recruited for anything other than ILB. I don't see Rover or Drop for McGrone.

in anyones opinion, is McGrone someone who, if the staff was all in on as early as they were Gant, would already be committed?

yes likely however tenn apparently leads....just had to wait to see how his knee healed...other schools that toss offers out and are willing to retract an offer didn't have to worry about his knee if in fact he didn't recover fully

I think that's more likely than not.

Wiltfong CB'd him to ND early last season - the week before he headed to ND for the Stanford game (also the week before he tore his ACL). Wiltfong obviously talked to him at that time with the ND visit coming up and felt moved to CB him. Wiltfong's got his finger on the hometown Indy kids' pulse as well as anyone.

ND needs to get a lock on the Indy area. Pretty disappointed they haven't already.

Why the negativity?
Are people just reading something into his level of excitement about the Michigan offer?

He seemed just as hyped about the ND offer and always tweeted a ton of pro-ND stuff before and after being offered by ND. Not saying we get him but let things play out.

OSU analyst Andrew Ellis with a CB for Michigan. Ballsy move for a guy who rarely does anything unless Master Fong jerks his chain.

With Ovi projected to stay at LB, and Bauer also in the fold, there's a realistic possibility that we don't "need" or take another LB anyway.

If McGrone or Lamb wanted in now, they'd have their spot. But the class could fill up without another LB involved if the LB targets take their time deciding.

Isn't he the plan b for Shayne Simon anyway? If Shayne commits then oh well

Kind of. With Robertson, Genmark-Heath, and Owusu in the last class, and transfer from Navy, if they add Allen and Simon, then safety/rover/big-nickel is covered, eliminating the spot that would be taken by an extra LB like McGrone or Lamb.

But, that also depends on the timing. If McGrone or Lamb claims a spot, they'll take that guy and then still take Simon obviously. That's just one less spot for other positions they're still trying to recruit.

This is the most baffling thing to me about ND recruiting and those that follow it. We say we want to recruit the best players, and then when other schools start recruiting those players, we freak out and assume we won't land them. At no time, giving any thought to the idea that we've actually landed, A LOT of really good players over the years. Ones that other schools wanted. This notion that ND is always a bridesmaid is laughable. Now we could certainly do things differently, not leaving gaps at certain positions, certainly. But I'm not throwing in the towel each time Harbaugh wants a player that ND does as well.

Could McGrone end up at UM, of course. That doesn't signal the demise of ND recruiting. In fact, if it works out that we get Simon and give McGrone, I'd gladly take that.

So McGrone is a Rover and him and Simons are only options for the same role?

No McGrone is a Buck, and is being recruited as the #1 Buck option, per his words post II.

He's a wanted man by Elko. This would certainly be a loss were he to pick UM. But how much of a loss would it be? Do we then give more time to Calvert and Lamb? If we land Simon couldn't Ovie play Buck?

These are all questions we have to ponder and then decide which side we fall on. I would definitely take McGrone in this class, but is this a loss of epic proportion that this class can't recover from? No. Especially if we land Simon.

Nope. McGrone is more of a Buck/Rover (emphasis on Buck) from what I've seen and read. Simon is more Rover/Safety (emphasis on Rover). We have Ovie at Buck but he could be anything from a Rover to a Drop.

McGrone is icing on the cake, IMO. I'd love to have him because he seems to have great potential but it's not a killer if he goes to UM. Also remember that UM wanted Simon and now that it seems he's headed to ND, they offer McGrone. I don't think it's a coincidence.

I'd also rather have McGrone than Lamb or Calvert but I'm no expert. Either way...I want McGrone and Simon and then shut it down on LB recruiting. We'll see how it plays out.

They were discussing on the II podcast how the numbers are really getting tight. If we get Simon the suggestion may be that we don't add another buck LB. Lamb is not apparently in a hurry to make a decision and Sampson indicated this good for ND since they need the time to figure all who they want and how the numbers work.

We're just like a little kid, where mom gives you a toy catalog and ask you to circle what you want for Christmas. When she opens it up, we've circled 90% of the toys in the catalog. Nothing wrong with wanting it all! lol

Yup, adding another true LB is bottom of the totem pole compared to the other positions they are still actively recruiting for.
