He's a must get.
Dumbest and most over used phrase in recruiting, because it actually makes zero sense. So what happens if we don't get him? Does that mean we'll never field a competitive LB corp? Does it mean we're doomed to 8 win or less seasons?
It implies that if we don't land him, something bad will happen. Which couldn't be further from the truth. Now, you could say he's a huge want, or something along those lines but "must get" needs to be banned from recruiting lingo forever.
Depends what the goals are. If it's actually to win a championship one day, anyone who's a 50/50 to ND that is at an arguable elite level IS a must get and we need to close on. We're not close to having enough top end talent to compete at the top IMO.
If you need a definition of elite, see here:
Ohio State 2017 Football Commits
Still doesn't apply. We signed Jaylon Smith and he didn't win us a championship. He's arguably the best LB talent to play college ball at ND, EVER. The point is, saying any one singular player is a must get is a stupid phrase. Could you say, that signing elite LB's is a must have or DL, CB's etc, based on depth chart or current weaknesses, sure. But no one singular player is a must get, ever. And here is the important part, especially trying to discern that at this stage, its laughable if folks think they are able to depict who the player that next leads ND to a championship, while they are seniors is HS. Marcus M. turned out to be a "must get" for the Ducks, did you think he was at the time? Still didn't win a championship. Manziel ended up being a "must get" for A&M, but did you think he would be when he started his Senior season? Still didn't win a championship. Deshaun Watson was coined a "must get" by everyone and he couldn't win a championship last year. Clowney at SC, Driskell at UF, I could keep going. It takes an entire team to win a championship, not one player.
Don't get me wrong, he's a great player but that term is dumb and used far too often when speaking about singular players.

Sports talk usually isn't literal. When someone says 'must get', the program isn't going to crash if we don't get him. When I say 'Carlisle did nothing', I don't mean that he didn't exist.
...and that's the problem with sports talk, Skip.
I think you're taking it a little too literally, but in that regard, yes, you're correct - no one is an absolute must get.

Then say he is my "biggest want" or something along those lines. Again, the vocabulary that some use when it comes to recruiting or posting in general doesn't have to be so dramatic. Must have is an overly dramatic phrase that implies necessity. Which in reality, couldn't be further from the truth.
Your Carlisle post is a great example. One, saying he did nothing and that he didn't exist are not the same. There are a lot of players that existed but didn't have production. So once again, you defend your previously ridiculous post, with another. Two, he actually did have production making that post pointless. You could've very easily illustrated that you weren't happy with his production or made a more intelligent point. Instead you made an inaccurate and quite frankly stupid post. The fact is, Carlisle didn't do "nothing", so in saying so, that is either trolling to illicit a response or stupid. I don't believe you are a stupid person. Thus the message from Irishlion.
We're not writing law here with a quail feathered pen, we're talking sports. Sports naturally brings more hyperbole than any other topic in the world, I'd argue.
I'll pass on your suggestion to be completely literal. I'm having a good time.

Shocker, another extreme and dramatic analogy coming from this guy.
Its not a matter of being completely literal. A lot of posters are sarcastic and a lot of posters use witty humor on the board. Some of your posts are neither or those. If it doesn't change, that time might be short lived. Just letting you know.
So, what's up with Phillips?
Is this another threat from the mods to ban me? 2nd this week.
For what? Using hyperbole with Carlisle and saying a guy like Caleb Kelly is a must get? Seriously?
I'm not going to talk like you. I will talk how I talk, and I'm not harming anyone in doing so. I'm amazed by this. And by amazed, I mean amazed. I'm sorry we do not agree on everything, but I don't mind freedom of opinion. Have yours, I'll have mine, we can disagree. It's ok.
This has nothing to do with your Caleb Kelly comment, nobody said that. Your Carlisle post is a part of the conversation, one of many posts that have been discussed. I didn't say you did anything today, but your defending of some of these actions, the Carlisle post, means you probably don't fully realize or understand the point Irishlion and I were trying to make the other day. I was simply giving you a heads up that a good nights sleep or two, doesn't make that go away.
So is the phrase "must win" stupid and dramatic too. Last year many people considered Stanford a must win if we wanted to get in the 4 team playoff even though it did not mean we automatically were in or were awarded a NC. If we don't land him, ND will go on...but when players of his caliber are interested I would like to close with at least a few. Complaining about a damn phrase is hysterical when you know damn well what I meant. No need to be condescending to others on the board

To your first question, no. But, if a person only speaks in hyperbole for the majority of their posts, it takes away from when they REALLY want to make a point.
