So, this guy's is gonna handle kickoffs in order to save Yoon's leg for FG's, and this guy could also do FG's if Yoon doesn't get right, or if he gets burnt out during the year doing FG's.

Struck me the same way.

Long term, the new PK is in the house. Short term he provides relief to Yoon on KOs immediately, and FGs if needed.

Doerer also provides backup to Newsome who has two years of eligibility left but should be on schedule to graduate next year. IF Newsome does chose to move on there's a new punter in the house.

Sorry haters, smart long range planning.

Yessir, I'm with ya. 90% touchback percentage, 12 FG's in his SR. year. Can punt. Great kid. Yoon has tendinitis. Yoon and Newsone only have 2 yrs. eligibility. The whole thing makes sense. I like it.

First: welcome to Notre Dame Jonathan.

Second: the article states that if he worked on his punt game he would be one of the tops in the nation. So this kid will be kickoff specialist from day 1, no more returnable kickoffs. As you mentioned excellent backup plan to Yoon and eventual predecessor. And a good option to be Newsome's backup as punter. Jonathan is a very valuable member of this class.

Could turn into another Pat McAfee, who by the way is listed at 6'1" but might be close to 6'3". Saw him yesterday at the Indianapolis Home show and was surprised to see he was as tall as he was.

Looking back on the articles and comments, it looks like Doerer was never terribly accurate. However, he was touted as having possibly the strongest leg in the nation and 90% touchbacks etc, etc. He was brought in primarily to do kickoffs and he's not been living up to his billing.

This. Sounds like the staff thinks competition might help him. But at this point, I doubt he will ever end up with the FG job. Leonard looks pretty impressive.

Sounds like his issues are between the ears as he reportedly murders the ball in practice. There is zero excuse for not kicking it out of the endzone. I know initially, the coaches were hoping he would hit high short kicks inside the 5 but I think they’ve realized that the 7-10 yards that a return may be reduced isn’t worth the potential of a return to midfield or the endzone.

Doerer was a preferred walk-on at Maryland. ND gambled & flipped him w/ a scholarship offer. I’d say the gamble has not paid off as of yet.

You think!?! He's been pretty much a bust thus far!

^ Politeness. Pretty much a dead artform.

Irishize was giving the young man the benefit of the doubt by keeping that sliver of hope open for his development.

Great opportunity for Doerer to gain some confidence as Yoon's back-up. He responded nicely to the missed extra point by following the miss with five made extra points and a made field goal.

anyone else getting nervous about doerer taking over field goal duties assuming he's not beaten out by leonard.

Yep.

I'd put my money on Leonard taking over the majority of the FG/XP at some point this year. Hopefully Doerer can keep him KO's in bounds and he holds onto that job.

Yep, and even though there was 1 practice where Leonard seemed like a ray of hope, I'll still hold my breath most kicks regardless of which we trot out.

Just be prepared for more 4th down attempts over settling for a FG.

I believe BK had said something about this prior to practice starting. I think it was a headline for one of Sampson's articles.

Special teams will definitely be an adventure this season. Hold onto your hat.

I'm kind of tired of ST being an adventure. It's been one for years and not in a good way. Yoon and Newsome were very good but we did terrible on kickoff coverage and it hasn't been great on punt returns. When is the last time we had a PR for a TD?

Top my head, 2015 (Sanders may have one in 2016, but I can't remember). Which means we aren't due up for a couple years if precedent holds.

I was in school for some of the Zibby years, and when he housed the one against USC, I damn near died of joy, but man there were other times where I thought he was dead because of not signaling fair catch. Love the big plays, but if we never muffed a punt or kickoff again, I'd be more than happy to let the offense do all the scoring.

Boy does he look improved from last year. Great performance.

For me he was one of the biggest if not my biggest concern going into the season. Now he is a strength for the team on kickoffs and FG’s.
