CBS Sports Network recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said Werner, who has played as a defensive back and linebacker at Cathedral, may need time to develop to reach that standard.
“He’s tall and rangy,” Lemming said. “I think they’re looking at him as more of a future guy. He’s not as good as the other two linebackers (Adams, White) right now when you watch him on film. But he’s a guy that could fill out and become a really good outside linebacker. He just hasn’t been as productive as the other two.”

He is 6'0 +

Yeah, I don't get the 5'9" thing. White looks like he has the tools to have a really high ceiling. Actually, all of the '17 linebackers, seem to be high upside guys!

I was being facetious at 5'9", but from how he looked on film, if someone said he'd be 6' even I'd take it against his actual height. Just looked short next to a bunch of high schoolers to me.

I usually agree with Lemming but he must have received a copy of Werner's lowlights then because when I see hi tape it's like watching Harrison Smith. Fast against the run game and he's even lining up at CB in some plays. The other thing is, Cathedral's schedule might not be St Thomas Aquinas' but it's as good as Central Catholic's. To say you just got a 6-3 OLB that lines up at CB sometimes is a skill set the other two don't have.

That bunch of high schoolers could have had 10 DI players in the film. Every game is an all star combine on STA's schedule. They're the Catholic IMG.

Hell of a leap for someone who tweeted this yesterday:

I saw that he was playing CB and it made me wonder if he could be a SS candidate down the road. He's definitely has some speed and has coverage ability if he is playing cb for, arguably, the best team in Indiana.

Nah, bulk this kid up to 235-240 and let him make plays. Higher upside than the other two backers based on his play in space, coverage ability, and length. Completely different skillset from the other LBers - may not be on their level yet as far as getting through traffic/taking on blockers. Once he stacks on the weight he will get there.

White has very underrated athleticism. When I watch his film, I see really good feet, change of direction, and closing speed. Kid is a player. Werner at Sam, White at Will, and Adams at Mike. I'd really like a 4th this cycle but maybe the staff is viewing some of those S's from last cycle as future LB's

I agree. Perry and Morgan are likely future LB's. Gotta get 2 really good DB's this year to follow up on last years haul

Typically rated among the best teams each year. Definitely the best Catholic program. They play an independent schedule and usually play against two or three of the top Catholic schools from Ohio every year. They typically schedule one or two games against MIC schools as well.

Pritchett, Stams and Stonebreaker... The Sequel.

Yes please. For you young pups, do your homework and read up on these guys. Stonebreaker's name is quite appropriate for a LB.

IF he could be physically ready at 220-225 he could do it. Tranquil was listed at 6-2, 210 in HS and he's everyone's hope to be the SS this year. Without seeing them together, I think Werner's a little longer. I can't lie, the first time I saw him I thought, I bet that's what John Lynch looked like in HS.

Now with that said, a 240lb converted DB playing SAM like Drake mentioned is even better. There are always undersized guys who can be beefed up to play SS. Long, athletic guys who can bring DB skills to OLB are much harder come by and take time to build off the field.

Pete Werner: ‘Notre Dame is my home’

Deck: Four-star linebacker Pete Werner discusses the timing and thought-process behind his decision to commit to Notre Dame on Monday.

When Scout 300 linebacker Pete Werner called Irish linebackers coach Mike Elston on Monday evening, his intention was to schedule a return visit to Notre Dame.
He didn’t expect that less than an hour later, his recruitment would be over.
“Last night I talked to coach Elston on the phone, and I tried to schedule a visit back up there this weekend to spend the night with a player to get even a better feel for it,” Werner said. “I was supposed to visit Ohio State but had already called their coaches and told them I’m doing what my heart is telling me to do, and I want to go back to Notre Dame.
“I called coach Elston, and he basically said, ‘we’re taking one more linebacker and you’re the one we want and you’re the one we need.’

“I talked to my parents, and 30 minutes later called him back and committed.”
The 6-foot-2 ½, 215-pound prospect from Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral ultimately chose Notre Dame over Michigan, but Penn State and Wisconsin were also under consideration.
Werner took back-to-back visits to Michigan and Notre Dame last weekend, his first look at both programs. The side-by-side comparison played into Notre Dame’s favor.
“They’re both great schools, and I thanked Michigan a lot,” Werner said. “I liked the smaller feeling in a college – 8,000 compared to 35,000. Not saying that Michigan coaches were bad, but I just felt a better connection with Notre Dame. I talked to coach Elston and coach (Brian) Kelly a lot. I felt like their interest in me was stronger. I knew Michigan had a linebacker that was going to commit there. I knew Notre Dame had a spot waiting, and I couldn’t pass it up.
“After coming home and comparing it to other schools it just felt right. I couldn’t get it out of my head. It felt perfect.”
Werner spent his first two years of high school attending Mt. Vernon in Fortville, Indiana, located 15 miles northeast of Indianapolis. His parents also attended Mt. Vernon before graduating from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
“Growing up in Indiana, (Notre Dame) is the school everyone grows up worshipping,” Werner said. “I did not. But as I continued to grow and learn about the school and how great the academics are, it changed my thoughts.”
Werner’s brother, Dan Werner, is a freshman tight end at Harvard. Werner confided in his older sibling throughout the recruiting process.
“I was talking to him for a while about things, and he was like, ‘I’m not a scout here, just talk to me like a brother,’” said Werner laughing, “It was pretty cool, especially with a guy that plays in college and you look up to.”
Werner, who plays safety, cornerback and linebacker for Cathedral, projects as a Sam linebacker at Notre Dame. He holds an official time in the 40-yard dash of 4.59 seconds and runs the 400-meter as a member of Cathedral’s track team.
“Notre Dame liked how I played different positions,” Werner said. “They liked how I moved for my size. They say it’s hard running 4.6’s, 4.5’s when you’re a 215-pound linebacker, so they like my speed. They talked to my coach and saw that I was hardworking and a guy that really wanted to excel.”
Werner was Notre Dame’s third linebacker commitment of the week and fifth overall to emerge from Saturday’s Junior Day list of visitors.
The linebacker commitments that came hours before his didn’t play a role in the timing of his decision.
“No, because they play different positions,” Werner said. “They see me as a Sam, another guy at the Will and another one at Mike. So it works out perfectly.”
Werner spoke emphatically to his affinity for Notre Dame when asked about other programs’ possible pursuit.
“I’d like to say Notre Dame is my home,” Werner said. “I like it a lot.”

I'd like to see him play will. I think he could bend the edge and he just has this late explosion to the ball carrier.

I guess if they blitz the Sam backer then that would be good also.
