On the field who did they have since Luck? Nunes, Hogan and now Burns.
On the roster they had a lot of talent coming in per the services. I'll compare them to the current ND QB's.
Josh Nunes. Higher rated than DK or MZ.
Kevin Hogan. Lower rated than DK or MZ. The only 3 star here.
Brett Nottingham. Higher rated than DK
Ryan Burns. Higher rated than DK or MZ
Keller Chryst. Equal to BW, just .00XX behind.
KJ Costello. Equal to BW. Also .00XX behind BW.
Davis Mills. Class of '18. 5 star. Above everyone listed here including Luck.
Jack West. Coming in '18. Currently a .95xx Comp.
This is my point. They have had plenty of Pro-Style QB talent and they have not been able to make the WR's look good outside of a 900 yd year by Ty Montgomery. You can't blame lack of available QB talent. It's the same as blaming Koyak, Smythe and Weishar for a lack of production by traditional TE's at ND. It's a product of the system, not the position.
I watched a lot of Ryan Burns in HS as I live about 200 yards from the school and I have no idea how he could have been rated higher than Malik or Deshone. I was shocked when Burns got offered by Stanford. Heck, I'd say that Ian Book was as good as Burns.
He came from an option type offense (not Navy triple option) and rarely threw the ball. When he did, I was not impressed. His HS (Stone Bridge) still runs the same offense and it works somehow. Hard to stop and by doing so, it allows the coaching staff to maximize the athletic ability of the players, similar to what Navy does. Every year I think it will be a down year for Stone Bridge but they always seem to excel. Going to a game tonight as a matter of fact.
