Loy gets on a kid at the US army combine and stays on him. I was two exits up the 5 from Sears and heard more about him through Loy than I did everywhere else combined. Loy following him so closely always gave me that glimmer of hope he was doing it because ND was still thinking about it in a plan b sorta way.

Oh well.

No, if Loy is close with a recruit he will gloat about him all year. He made an ND bolt about Sears going to USC and Duke at the time. Like ND fans care?

...and he's going to play QB at SC. The biggest must know of anything outside of South Bend. IMO of course.

I understand what you are saying but when other kids commit to SC you don't see bolts about it.

"I did commit to USC earlier today," Sears said. "I was not dropped, I talked to Duke earlier today to let them know I was de-committing and was going to wait until tomorrow to release my commitment so Duke could talk to other recruits. It definitely wasn't an easy decision for me and something I've been thinking about for awhile now.
"I started to have second thoughts on my Duke commitment on my official visit for the Army game (Oct. 8). I tried to suppress the change of heart but I really started to assess things the last 10 days and then finally decided yesterday that USC is where I want to be."
Sears said he made the call to commit to Coach Clay Helton earlier this morning.
"I spoke with Coach Helton this morning around 10:30 and he welcomed me in to the Trojan family," Sears said. "It was really close between those two when I first committed and I just really like the direction USC is going right now.
"USC was first class when I didn't originally choose them and I have a lot of respect for Coach Helton. I'm really looking forward to being teammates with Sam (Darnold) and being a part of the USC program with that great tradition going forward."

Hank Bachmeier was out due to Covid (most likely) so Sears got the start.

Was 17/20 for 280 and 3 TD's + 35 yds on the ground and a TD.

Hard to believe this is his 4th college season.

Big test for him next week. Assuming he plays again.

BYU/BSU should be a good watch. Last chance for a BYU stumble IMO.

Yeah, got that one circled. Hopefully Boise gets Holani back too.

Whether it's Bachmeier or Sears, I gonna watch.

Great late game for Friday. I'd prefer to watch Sears, but will watch either and be happy about it. I think the Miami/NC St game early Friday could be interesting too.

I really want to see BYU go undefeated.

Liberty, an undefeated IND, is another off the beaten track good game Saturday. They've already beaten a P5, and VT isn't bad.

Remind me, is Bachmeier the guy that you were really high on a couple years ago? How has he looked?

Yeah, I thought he was the guy most likely to say yes when ND was looking the second time around with Mertz & Duggan.

He won the job at Boise last year as a true freshman. Got hurt twice so he only started 8 games but played well and went 7-1 with their only loss being to Washington in the bowl game.

Seen him play in HS and would of loved to see him in a ND uniform!

With Harsin leaving for Auburn...

Do I finally get Jack Sears after all this time?

Probably a best case scenario for the QB position is to bring in a guy like Jack to play for a year and then Buch takes over in 22'.

100%, but how to do you convince this guy that coming to a place with an anemic passing game is where he needs to be? Do you sell him on the youth that either hasn't seen a college snap yet or wasn't good enough to crack the two-deep despite a plethora of injuries and lack of skill at the postion? Do you sell him on the current projected *injured* starters? Do you sell him on our 2-3 TE sets and RTDB? I just don't see it happening.

You sell him on being the starting QB for a team that made the playoffs 2 out of 3 years.

The year we'll be breaking in 3 (if we're lucky) to 4 new OL plus all of the above? OK, good luck with that.

I know the Clemson game was bad, but ND didn't suddenly become a bad destination overnight.

Regardless of the roster and situation, if a transfer QB wants a chance at the NFL, being the starting QB at NOTRE DAME is not a bad way to go about things.

Was he hurt most of the year or buried on the depth chart?

Not saying we're a bad team, this has nothing to do with the Clemson game, but situationally this kid is looking to make a name for himself so that he can parlay that into some NFL money. This doesn't seem like the right destination for him all things considered. It's possibly going to be a borderline rebuild year next season. If you're him, do you roll the dice on the chance that it's merely a reload season?

We may be getting a little ahead of ourselves as Sears isn't even in the portal yet, and hasn't (?) said anything about going into it. They will have a new coach who might open up the QB job for spring practice. Or Sears might stay at Boise for any one of a number of reasons.

IMO we can't wait until May to go after a transfer QB. We want him in school when it starts the first week of Feb. And obviously cannot recruit a QB who doesn't enter the portal before then.

To answer my own question, it was depth chart. Sears transferred in but was (from the stats, undeservedly) sitting behind the incumbent Hank Bachmeier - who is also younger.

With the change in coach, the depth chart situation, and the free transfer this year I would bet money that Jack Sears ends up in the portal.

I am against taking a transfer QB as a placeholder but Jack Sears is a real talent with real potential.

I think Crus is onto something here.

I get what you're saying, but it's as much about marketing as it is finding the right supporting cast.

If I'm a transfer QB that wants to make it to the NFL, and Notre Dame calls, I'm probably not totally worried about what they have at WR/TE/etc. I'm probably thinking, "I'm the guy that could help them make the playoffs again."

If I'm choosing from some non-name-brand power 5 schools, THEN I'll start to worry about who's catching passes, pass-blocking for me, and all that other stuff.

i was going to present you facts on the bolded but then realized nothing that was going to be presented was going to change your mind....not sure how we go 10-1 and now we f'ing suck and why would anyone come here..IE is becoming more and more like the posters on facebook/twitter etc.

He makes a valid point on the supporting cast, but we had to wade through the frustrations of the offense in general to get there lol.

Where the fuck did I say we suck? Enlighten me. I said we have a number of issues, including an anemic passing game and we'll be replacing the majority of our OL starters. Prove me wrong.
