All the grad transfers.

If this is how we gotta "play ball" to get over the hump then glad were doing it.

Sweet! This is how you play big boy ball. Get the grad transfers to fill your holes. Should be no more "rebuilding years" using this method.

This one doesn't really move the needle for me though. McCloud at CB certainly does, if he stays healthy.

i think you gotta look at it like this. is he better than our worst running back.

I'd say yes.

Then if you add in hes been coached by Taylor before so theres going to be some help as far as coaching some of the younger guys on how to do things the way Taylor wants them done. Bonus points.

Certainly doesnt come in at the potential impact level as McCloud but still a nice add regardless.

Really depends on whose scholarship he's taking and we don't know that yet.

Coaches probably do tho.

And i would say they probably are making a pretty informed decision so I am not too concerned about this aspect

But what about last year? I show no stats - was he not injured? Just, benched?

2016 - Redshirted (McCaffrey and Love were there)
2017 - 3rd on depth chart behind Love and Scarlett
2018 - '', thought the carry split bw Speights/Scarlett was more even.
2019 - Injured

I don't think this guy is a stud but I'm also pretty low on our RB room and I think he improves it. Stanford fans seemed to be a fan of his dirty work, and if he was healthy he may have been their starter or 1b last year.

No just one. He redshirted his Fr year.

Been indicated he was actually injured his freshman year. Trevor says he has 2 years

ShIpLeY wHo?!

Am I doing this right?

I get the sentiment, but it's an apples to oranges comparison. Speights will likely have a bigger impact in this upcoming season than Shipley would have anyway, so it's a nice consolation prize for the near-term.

Why are we now dipping into transfer portal, not that I’m complaining

Competitive necessity. Since we can't take JuCo transfers and we don't manage kids out as aggressively as others, we've needed an ethical way to fill crucial holes on our roster for decades now. GS transfers work for us, and thankfully we're an attractive destination for a lot of proven kids who need one last chance to show out for the NFL under more favorable circumstances.

If he says he has 2 then he applied for a 6th year waiver already. The NCAA gives you 5 years to play 4. In the past, if you received a redshirt (regardless of what you called it) you had 4 years to play besides that. If you got injured again, too bad you just lost the year... unless you applied for a 6th year waiver and got it approved.

I'm not either. Like Jamie says, the comparative AVGs tells the tale. Not saying our rushing was great last year, or that Jones was all that, but I just don't see a lot of upside here with Speights.

Maybe I'm naive about the current skill level of our RB, but I don't seeing Speights being better than Armstrong (although I think he becomes more of a satellite guy), CBo, Smith, or Williams.... I'd throw Tyree in there too, but I think BK will be BK and not really play the youngster.

I hope that's not the case. The best should play.

At minimum, IMO he should be in the rotation as a satellite guy, but I think Armstrong will end up getting those reps. Given his size, I really doubt he gets much if any snaps between the tackles.

To be honest though, if they're not willing to go all in on him this year early, I'm good with a RS year. Let him play situationally vs Wiscy, Clemson, and USC, and then in the playoffs if we make it, and keep the year.

Looks like he's already added some weight (179 to 185), so if he's up to 195 this year, I'd love to see him get a chance.

Honestly I'm more concerned that Jordan Johnson get in the mix early. A rotation of Lindsey, Keys, Austin, and Johnson could be crazy good. If Austin can't keep out of the doghouse, I hope they insert Johnson into the mix immediately. I'm really stoked to see what happens with Reesus at the helm calling plays.

What's there to be impressed about?

I am not sure if averages are a solid way to measure a guy like Speights though. You have to take into account how he was used (or not because he was injured).

I don't think we would be adding him just to add him. Have to think he brings something to the room, and that he can contribute.

Drawing a blank on Lindsey???

I will also be interested to see what Skowronek brings to the table.

I think Speights will be TJJr last year for this year. Pass Pro seems like a strength, he is a veteran, and he is probably better than a lot of people think, but just doesn't have the measurables. That said, I think he will be used like we thought TJJr was going to be, and not as he actually was (as the #1). He will be a successful grad transfer due to experience, Pass Pro, physicality, and attitude not so much by numbers.
