Not that anyone thought Hayes would be back next year with a freebee or anything...

I wanted to bump this. I think we can all agree Hayes is playing his best football right now. I don't think it's a coincidence, he's back down below 260, at 258, and this is happening. That's an incredible 12 lb. drop since camp. Gotta manage those lbs if he wants to be an edge rusher. He gets paid if he keeps this up.

Yep, he started the year slow. But he was playing very well last year before the injury and has been excellent the last 2 games. I can see him getting drafted.

Yeah he has to work himself back into shape and shake off all the rust. Remember he missed the last 8 games or so of last season, no spring practice, etc

He did not start the year slow. Just because he wasn’t making sacks doesn’t mean he wasn’t playing great. He was. He’s been a big reason all year for our success against the run. I’m glad he’s finally making those plays that are putting him in an elite level.

In retrospect 2016 was an incredible class. Tons of starters and major contributors.

You're not fooling. I think 15/23 have made significant impacts on the football team as good starters. Pretty incredible. '17 is pretty similar in impact, and they're probably going to be the winningest class in ND history right?

Respectfully, I disagree. You can’t be an edge defender and just play half the game well and be playing great. There are two responsibilities, run and pass. You aren’t paying great players on Sundays if you aren’t impactful with your pass rush and/or making negative plays. He’s clearly trimmed down and back to a much quicker weight for him and he’s putting it altogether now. Couldn’t be more happier for him.

So who gets #9 next year? Is Daelin gonna gift it like Jaylon did to him?

I'm a bit disappointed #3 wasn't a thing for awhile. Avery Davis has stepped up a bit, but there used to be a certain...pride when it came to that number. There were expectations players had to live up to, a standard to model yourself after. Felt like after Floyd left it kind of...fell into obscurity.

Good question, I’d go with Foskey. Foskey is going to be an elite defender for us. I’d bet he’s a potential first rounder in 2 years.

I'd think he's a good candidate but he already looks good in #7

Botelho wears 19, right? Easy transition. Done and done.

It would absolutely be Wu if he stayed another year.

Maybe Marist?

He would've been a perfect fit for 5 if someone doesn't have a brain fart and give it to Cam Hart.

Kiser will grab #4 if/when McCloud moves on next year or does Hamilton wanna drop the 1? I think he'll stay 14.

Clarence goes for #2.

Marist gets #6 gifted him. That makes the most sense

So 8 and 9 are open. I'll go Botelho gets 8, Justin Ade gets 9.

Will Buchner walk right into Book's #12 which was Buchner's # in HS? Does he have enough stones to ask for #1? I think he gets 12

As far as #1, How about the rookies take it? Styles & Riley.

The cherry on top will be if Hinish goes 0.

the #3 should be reserved only for QBs.

There have been other positions that have worn #3 and lived up to the tradition. Darius Walker, Arnaz Battle, Michael Floyd. Amir Carlisle is probably the first that didn't quite live up the tradition...great guy, good heart, but didn't have eye popping numbers and probably wasn't the same after the injury prior to him transferring in. It kind of continued from there for others players that have worn it, although Avery Davis is starting to get opportunities and making some big plays.

Good for the university for amplifying the position Daelin had off the field this summer. Will be well deserved for Daelin if he wins and a great look for the university
