The Irish D is going to struggle with any team that has a decent line for QB protection and a pretty decent passing attack. Our secondary appears to be our achilles heel watching all the over the top throws even from the young QB's from Texas.

Best way to help the DBs is to get a pass rush. Daelin Hayes please? Let's see what this kid can do.

Does Wiltfong have an SI or Loy track record for cursability? Has the term Fong'd already been coined? Cuz he just said this in a 247 freebie:

Five Notre Dame Irish players that need to step up against Duke

The freshman safety had his first career interception against the Spartans and the future All-American has shown flashes of why he was the top defensive back target on Notre Dame’s board. He’ll take on more responsibility as the season goes and Saturday is another opportunity for him to gain experience. I’ll wager Studstill leads the ND secondary in tackles by the end of the season. I’d like to see him fill the box score in this one.

To be fair, if you force a turnover in this shit bag of a defense you should have a statue built after you.

I'm still waiting for the Max Redfield statue in the North Entrance of the stadium. 2 years overdue!

Still having issues tackling. Missed a few tackles in the first half. One that allowed a big run by Love.

What did everyone think of Studstill this year? Once again the staff hyping up a player all off season. No way he was an upgrade over Max Redfield like everyone thought. All the off season talk was to motivate Max and it had me have high expectations for Devin but man

I hope Nico actually plays over him next year which I thought I would never say. At least Nico shows effort and fly's to the football and likes to hit people

But man our safety position is just ugly as can be with no answers coming soon. This is on BK once again seven years into the program and there is no plan at safety nor is there even a backup plan

He had a Nyles Morgan type Freshman year. And considering he had to learn two schemes I'm willing to give him a pass and see how he develops.

Nyles made plays as a freshman though. I don't recall ever once yelling at my TV about Devin making a great play

Very poor season. Not a good tackler and looks slow. I mentioned this in another thread, sometimes a 3 star is a 3 star.

I'd prefer to have Jalen Love start at safety next year over Studstill. Or Devin Butler if he is allowed back on the team.

I don't think the comparison to Morgan's freshman year is a good one. Studstill played a lot more than Morgan. Frankly Morgan looked a lot better and athletic compared to Studstill. Morgan showed flashes, I didn't see one good trait from Studstill.

And he didn't have to learn two schemes. What do you think when BVG left they completely changed the defense and the players had to learn from scratch? Please they just made some tweaks, still same scheme.

Studstill could be a 4 year starter at ND and never be challenged by anyone for the job. Even more pathetic is that the same could almost be said about Redfield.

That is the reality of ND football.

I do recall yelling 'wrap up' about 50 times. He's in love with dropping the shoulder but doesn't have the UFC background to do it like the master.

Hire a retired rugby player to teach tackling like this.

38 tot. tackles, 1 TFL, 1 INT, and 1 FF. So he definitely made some plays in there. I was expecting more but I would by no means abandon an eval this early. Especially, with so much shakeup occurring on the defensive side of the ball. He also played A LOT of snaps, no way he wasn't wearing down as the season wore on. He was playing 50+ snaps week after week.

Honestly I didn't see any encouraging signs from him. Poor tackler, takes horrific angles and just looks plain slow. But I'm not a coach so what do I know.

Definitely bring the rugby guys in for tackling instructions. "Take your pads off, mate."

"How can ya execute a proper tackle mate? You're all wrapped up like a feckin medieval knight."

I think he like a lot of over players were given entirely to much credit in fall camp and all. It isn't his fault the Max decided to be a complete idiot. By not recruiting the safety issue was much more the problem.

I am not saying that he didn't miss tackles but that was a whole unit problem.

Must not have been paying attention. He had 28 solo tackles. Love had 32, Coney had 33, and JO had 39. So relatively speaking, that's where his production stands. I would definitely agree it should've been more, but you also add in that he created 2 TO's and that's also some decent company to be in.

I would start feritta next year! The kid makes plays and hits hard. If he is gonna get a personal foul or 15 yard penalty every 3 games, but cause a turnover every other game then I'm fine with that

Agreed with all of this, his speed is a major question just like it was in high school. What's the scariest part is that he is a free safety who can't run. He never looked like he was enjoying playing football either. Like most of the defense there seems to be no fire. I hope the next DC brings that in.

He needs to beef up, which isn't encouraging because that will likely just slow him down a little bit. Doesn't seem to be a FS. Still think he could be a decent player.

Only one problem with Nicco. He's a SS in a Shaun Crawford's body.

5-8.5 FS's are as rare as his Dad's '55 Ferrari.

He took a lot of bad angles. I'll chalk that up to inexperience. Struck me as reasonably fast but maybe b/c I'm comparing to Tranquil and Sebastian.
Like a lot of guys on our defense, he was serviceable, but that's about it. He got a lot of experience, though. Hope he keeps developing.
