In a weird way, I think ND dropping a game with Wimbush at the helm strengthens ND's argument for the playoffs.

Obviously winning out is still the best argument. Short of that though, the backup QB (that beat michigan!) loses a game, and I think the committee takes that into consideration when Book comes back.

I have to disagree. The committee, sports media, etc are all praying ND loses a game, so B1G and Oklahoma can take the last two spots, in a nice, neat, clean Selection Sunday.

As to the football gods, I have just one message:

If we ever hope of having the playoff open up to 6 or 8 teams (And I think we should given how difficult it is to run the table), we have to win out and get in this year. The more often we end up with playoff scenarios where there are 2 SEC teams, or ND takes a spot from a Power 5 Champ, it will cause further unrest and cause enough pressure to expand the playoff system.

BW is going to grab the bull by the horns.. 13-3 as a starter. This could be an audition for possibly another program for next year. Kid has been nothing but class act all the way through. He will be solid.

Exactly. I'm worried for Book and his health on a go-forward basis but I am not worried about BW and this game. He's a great athlete and truly has been a class act through and through.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Anyone see Kelly’s press conference from this evening? Sounds like Book could play and has practiced this week, but I’m inferring that he’ll be back next week.

Being a class act is not related to being solid. I'll give you the former, but you'll have to accept my apology that I'm a little skeptical of the latter.

All he said was he a “part of practice.” No say he took any reps.

Heard the same earlier (that he is practicing) but the person who told me said it was just rumor. Good to hear that BK confirmed.

On my schedule for later this evening:

There's the PC, the radio show, and a special for the seniors view-able on UND.

Kelly said he has participated enough to play on Saturday. As I said, sounds like he won’t play Saturday. But the good news is that it doesn’t sound like he’ll be out long.

I would doubt he's taking reps too given they've already said he was sitting. Here's what I heard... "was throwing without pads on"... The person that told me did say that it was unconfirmed/rumor, but he's also a guy that gets great info and is always honest about his level of confidence/source. Curious if anyone else heard the same.

Kelly said that Book was limited, but participated enough in practice to play on Saturday if they feel he can play. Listen to the presser starting at around the 6:00 mark.

Love you Brother and not trying to be deliberately obtuse, but BW's win/loss record tells another story. IMHO, he doesn't have the accuracy or read that IB has, but he is a competitor and wants the Irish to win. I'm less worried about this challenge v FSU. If it happened against Syracuse, I'm very worried.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Frankly if ND isn't 12-0 they don't deserve to be there. Expanding the playoff only waters it down.

Yeah, Idk. Teams always outperform their standard vs. us. FSU should be easy, but I think we find a way to make it difficult, and I think that reason is BW. I think his win/loss record is more in spite of him than because of him. I mean, shit, I'd love to be wrong, but he's probably the worst QB we've had since Crist got a few starts. Eh, maybe Malik. Idk. Toss up for me. End of the day, I hope I'm wrong, but I'd be lying if I said I'm entirely confident our playoff bubble won't burst on Saturday. Go Irish.

FSU is 4-5. They don’t have a QB as they have played two this year. They have the worst OL of maybe any power 5 team. They will be playing in below freezing temperatures. Their coach stated some players have already given up. And you think they will beat Notre Dame. Brandon Wimbush is 3-0 this year and 13-3 overall. And you think him starting will cost ND the game. Get the f out of here.

That's why they play the game. We'll see.

Totally agree Sherm-but I did fear this game when I saw the schedule because of their talent no matter who is coaching them-but my gut tells me this team is on a mission to go regular season undefeated and no matter what people think of Wimbush he's the best athlete on the field- he can do this.I hope its freezing.

My bet is that he plays well -problem is no matter what the unraveled situation is a fsu they have athletes, Wimbush will be fine. Book on the other hand is in the middle of a tremendous year and of course is the starter and will be missed. Kinda reminds me of Montana. Very similar college career to this point.

How many times have we gone 12-0? Can't do it every season, but an 8 team playoff isn't unquestionable, nor does it water down the season. That pretty much allows all five P5 champs, us, a Group of 5 like UCF, and a 2nd SEC team (Or whatever other P5 team was hot that year) to round out the group. That only adds one more week of playoff football, and quite frankly from a $ perspective I don't know why they haven't done it. Get 11-1, which is respectable and could be doable every few seasons, and we're likely in.

If I'm FSU, I use this as a possible springboard for next season. What better way to turn things around than an upset of an undefeated team falling back to a backup QB (Although certainly this backup is a different scenario since he was once the starter). There will be a lot of reasons for FSU to get motivated I think. I'm not calling for an upset, especially since we've seen Florida boys freeze up here in the past, but I think we better come out fast just in case and break their spirit early.

They will be absolutely stoked and ready to go until the cold hits them in the face. Hopefully the hotel manager will have all of their rooms thermostats dialed down just enough to keep them from getting a good nights sleep.

By all reports and indications, BW he's been a great teammate since losing the starters position. Given this, I think the team will play well under BW. Now if he had been whiney or not supportive I could see an adverse effect. I think we'll be fine even if FSU has all of these athletes. Afterall, we have some as well.

FSU is 128 against the run. Wimbush is a better runner than Book. Weather is terrible Wimbush might be the better QB for these conditions. Historically he has protected the ball pretty well. If he can play an average BW game we should be fine.

Remember when Brandon Wimbush beat what is regarded as the best defense in the Country? He is better than Malik, On par with Golson, Total QBR better than Tommy. Your hot take is way off on him being the worst QB since Crist.

There is also no weather conditions in which BW is better than Book.

Agreed. I do think Wimbush being from New Jersey and having practiced/played in cold weather games is a significant advantage over the FSU QBs. He's probably more comfortable in this weather than Book as well.

The two silver linings I'm trying to see with Book being down are a) the weather and Wimbush growing up in it and b) we might be able to play the 'guess who's starting game' next week with Syracuse regardless of how healthy Book is.
