Which coaches? There's lots of bodies for linebackers, which IS one of the reasons 3-4 has been popular in recent years (Aside from the success Alabama has had), but it's hard to find a kid with the size and strength to pull off a true 3-4 NT. Even the average ones get a mountain of offers. While they don't have to tie up multiple linemen every down, they do need to from time to time. Again, I know it's Wikipedia, but it's spot on here:

This. If we planned on moving to a 3-4 base again Ewell would probably be a good DE in the mold of Tuitt, but not an NT.

That said, after all this discussion, I don't see us moving to a 3-4 base going forward. We'll still pull it out for certain games as it sees fit, Navy being one probably as long as Jarron is here to tie up the A gaps...it allows us some extra speed to control the edge and disrupt the option. We used it well against Miami because Miami's OL wasn't very good, as seen by Jarron's complete dominance. Against teams with better OLs I think we'll see us to continue to use our base 4-3 unless we find a way to entice big, smart immovable objects to come here to play NT regularly.

Since BVG has left, we have played A LOT of 3-4. On top of that, Kelly has said multiple times that he actually prefers that, in most scenarios. He wants to be multiple but the 3-4 fits our personnel. That comes from the HC, himself. Just what it is.

Naw, Ewell's best attributes would be his strength, low center of gravity, has a very solid base. He has good balance and quick feet but he's not in the mold of a Sheldon Day, or maybe more appropriate, since they are in the same class, Haskell Garrett. Garrett is your prototypical 3T, shooting gaps type of player. Ewell is at his best, on top of a C, using the strength, drive, and power to his advantage.

Also, I'd disagree with your general premise of what a NT is supposed to do. Just like all DL, NT's have run responsibilities, but they are most certainly asked to push the pocket and create penetration. They are just asked to do so, on top of a defender versus shooting a gap. I've watched camp footage of Ewell and he's far more comfortable being on top of a C, that trying to win a shoulder of an OG.

I fully agree with all of this. Great insight bro. Ewell is an inside guy, no doubt and I think he will play next year in our, most likely, 4-3 base. There's arguments that 3-4 would be great. Diaco ran it and it was superb. But we don't have Louis Nix. Cage is great and all, but unless he really gets nasty and well conditioned, he can't be our starting 3-4 NT next year IMO if we want to be effective. We MOST CERTAINLY have the LB's to effectively run the 34 with Morgan, Martini, Bilal, Hayes etc plus our commits.....but our best defense, IMO, is a 43. We can always give 3 man front looks though. On a side note, I think Ewell is going to impress and play and make plays and be a difference maker.

I know you wrote etc...But Coney is a dude. I've been a fan since 1993. And a group of Morgan, Coney, Daelin Hayes, Martini and Bilal are the best group of linebackers I have ever seen Notre Dame put on the field at one time.

Not sold that Ewell will be an impact player his freshman year, by he end of his career no doubt (he is a dude). Basically thinking this because he has not dedicated his time to DL. Many scouts believe he could be a future AA at guard.

I F'd up and forgot to mention Coney. Coney is a stud and one of my faves. I respectfully disagree about Ewell though. He's gonna be a stud DT at ND

Also, dedicating his time....it's high school ball. He'll play where his HS team needs him. He's playing DT at ND. Also, look out for some of our true fresh LB's Nextel year

That's the point, way easier to find LB's then NT's. It wasn't ND coaches. I think one was Rick Venturi, but to be honest don't remember who they were because it's been years ago and they were talking on sports radio about college football.

Would be very surprised if any freshman came in and made an impact at LB. Both Manti and Jaylon played as freshmen, but their "real" impact was minimal. They showed their potential, both made a lot of mistakes their first year.

Tillery can go **** himself. Seriously. That is the worst shit I have ever seen out of a ND player in decades.

It was really bad, but I don't think he should be kicked off the team. he let his frustration get the best of him. He needs to grow up.

It would be one thing if he was a monster like Suh and actually backed up his antics, but he's been pathetic and then he tries to pull this shit.

Cut him and make an example of him. Not like we'll miss his huge production.

I agree that Tillery had an immature 4th quarter, but some of you ND fans....wow.

He was also suspended for (missing curfew?) for the bowl game. Liking those Les Miles to ND tweets lacked class/discretion. He really seems to have a pattern of issues. Wish he would learn from his mistakes. It should be interesting what he says in response to this.

I said this is the post game thread.

You all will call me crazy. But I like that someone on the team showed emotion and frustration. Need more of that from the players.
