CRYSTAL BALL

Hayes will be one of Keith Gilmore’s test cases. The veteran defensive line coach was brought in to get the next wave of players ready along the defensive line, and Hayes certainly fits in that first tier.

At this point, you can’t feel 100-percent positive about Day or Jones until you see them running and fully healthy in fall camp. (That’s the pessimist that doesn’t naturally come out in me.) So if there’s any issue with either of those two, you’ve got to assume that Hayes is going to be the beneficiary—ready or not.

Notre Dame could use a disruptive force along the defensive line, especially with a pass rush all but missing in action last season. Is Hayes that player? I don’t get the feeling he is, though it’s certainly not a prerequisite for a defensive tackle.

Either way, Hayes has the makings of a good one. We’ll find out how good come September.

His previous tweet seems worse. He references a coach giving up on him.

How does that work if he sits this entire year then transfers after? He'd still have to sit, right? Or does this year somehow being a RS make it so he doesn't have to?

This is very strange. It's strange that we are only playing 3 DT's. I so don't want to lose Jay. Will be a big contributor down the road.

I'm shocked he can get minutes. He looked good last year I thought, and had big reviews in spring. Has go be something going on that had hin in the dog house. Not blaming him or the coaches, but he's good enough where he should be playing.

The thing is, he's clearly worse than Day. And I don't see any argument for him playing over Cage/Tillery. And he's never been shown to have his head in the game, and he's been publicly airing grievances from before the season even started.

If he decides he needs to move on, then see ya. Putting that stuff on social media is a really bad look.

Maybe his coaches have access to Twitter? Anyhow, there does seem to be a strong correlation between over tweeting and a lack of playing time at ND. Less talk more rock would be my conclusion.

Thought the depth chart was setting up really nicely for him next year and the staff was trying to get a year now eligibility back after having to play him last year. Hopefully it's just blowing off steam because I think his situation was setting up perfectly for next year and beyond.

He's good enough to come in for Day, though and keep everyone fresh. Or have Day go to DE and get Romeo off of the field on 3rd downs. Hayes is a player. Probably a head case, but a player. He was disruptive last year as a true frosh.

Or maybe he is talking about a totally non related football issue having nothing to do with Notre dame.

There is no evidence to support this, but sure. Whatever you say.

Man we are turning out to be Transfer U and Out for the year due to injury U.

I am so tired of both of them. Man, we gotta catch a break some time.

Gunner, Williams, Wallace, Everett, Hardy, Vanderdoes, Lynch, Hill, Neal, Evans, etc

Injury: Drue x 2, Jones, Schmitt, Grace, Gray, KLM, Crawford, Smythe, Folson, Collingsworth, etc.

Crazy. Wish we could be on the better side of all this.

This would be incredibly disappointing. Hayes looked like a real RKG. He was someone who strived to be better and was raised to become a better person. He should know better that you won't get a better opportunity to become a better player and person than at ND, like he and his mother originally thought.

im guessing he aint happy about being redshirted.
its no biggie though i doubt he would transfer i think Jay is just prone to getting frustrated cos he wants to play so bad

You didn't think he looked good for being a true frosh last year? And idk if you have rivals, but Coach D said Hayes was his surprise player on the DL for this season because of his spring. Idk how much more supporting evidence you can get on a DL who played, what, 3 games last year?

You said he was disruptive as a true freshman. Lax said there is no evidence for that. Then you say you don't know how much more supporting evidence you can have for guy who played in three games.... And that he supposedly had a good spring but I don't recall that ever being the case. T was all Cage and Tillery IIRC. Anyway you just confirmed Lax's statement. The point being it is very hard to justify calling a true fresh an disruptive when he only had three games under his belt in games we got our asses kicked defensively. Just saying.

its a very immature way to go about it and one the coaches certainly aren't going to kiss his ass...he needs to take a page from Mathias and busts his @ss regardless of his playing/starting time was cut drastically but continues to be supportive to all other teammates...and guess what, now he is called upon to play another key role for the Irish...this is the kind of kid i want out of the locker room

we aren't close to be transfer U...you might just believe that because you haven't been watching other teams but plenty of teams have transfers at even a larger rate, you just happened to be vested in watching ND's news

Not sure what the case is but it seems like this is happening more and more with all schools due to social media and the irresponsible post they put on there.

It's subjective, as I don't know of a measure that quantifies 'disruptiveness'. If you guys didn't think he was disruptive for a true frosh last year, so be it. I thought he was. I do not have any evidence to submit to the court. It is only my opinion based on what I saw of him last year.

Is Hayes actually being redshirted this year? I hadn't seen that reported anywhere. If so, you'd think he'd have to be on board or else they wouldn't do it (I mean, it's up to him to come back for a fifth year on the back end).
If not, sure, he's stuck behind the best defensive lineman we've got, but we should really get him on the field, both for his experience and to give Day a rest. Unless of course there's in-the-doghouse stuff we don't know about. Like airing your gripes on Twitter.
Either way, he's not a player you really want to see walk.
