'14 MO DE Jonathan Bonner (Notre Dame Signee)

Good for him if he got what he wanted and wants to move forward. He's been a pleasant surprise this year. I guess it helps to reinforce that ND isn't just one of the football factories, the kids are actually there to be students.

I am all for guys getting what they want out of college football and walking away to the rest of their life. Like Steve Elmer did a couple years ago. What's weird is Bonner doesn't sound like he's necessarily retiring - he'd be open to the NFL - just not interested in a fifth year of college. I'd be curious why.

Sometimes you just get sick of the grind of it. Barry Sanders walked away because he hated training camp. Sounds like he knows he won't play in the NFL, and think he can get a good job right away, and if he can, more power to him.

Good news, IMO. I was a little concerned with MTA being a full time starter against our schedule. I love his potential, but if we are trying to win 10+ games against next years schedule, I think we are going to need the extra capable body on the DL.

Wow. Good news comes in bunches. (Now hire a kickass safeties coach and our defense will be loaded).

Don't know if anyone saw this, but as we celebrate getting him for another year we should also keep him and his family in our prayers and donate if we can.

Wow, prayers for his family. Looks like they're well on their way to reaching their goal, but still short at this time. Looks like a lot of players have donated, including a $925 donation from "Notre Dame Offensive Line." Very cool.

I didn't even think he was supposed to be bad last year

He wasn't bad at all.

He was stout against the run, he just didn't provide a legitimate interior pass rushing threat that you usually want at the 3. That's why I think him moving to the 1 is a good thing, because it suits his strengths better.

I think Bonner will do fine at the NT position. But I also think they'll be quite the rotation there. I think between Hinish and MDT they get around 10-20 snaps/game. And then in the Nickel/Dime packages, we won't even have a NT from the depth chart on the field. So, I don't think he's going to be asked to man the NT position for 60 snaps/game, but I guess we'll see.

Man I really hope MDT can contribute. Having him be a returning 5th year who can help next year will be big

I was watching an interview with him and Jack Nolan. Bonner said that he was recruited as a linebacker.

I was under the impression he was always a projected DE.

I believe it was the guys at ISD that said they felt he's done enough through camp to earn snaps. Probably not above Hinish on the depth chart but a small share of that NT position, to some degree. NT next year gets interesting because, as of today, there a lot of snaps up for grabs. It would be nice to see MDT and Hinish elevate their games to really push each other.

Yup, because I wouldn't want to rely on a RS FR Jam Franklin replacing Bonner completely
