Good point in the comments of an article from ONE FOOT DOWN:

"The 5-star kids that are transferring out are one’s that aren’t really confident in their decisions in the first place.
Kiel – comitted to IU, early enrolled at LSU
Lynch- committed to FSU and was close to early enrolling
Neal – was never committed to another school but supposedly wanted to go to OSU but they didn’t have space after how long he waited
Vanderdoes- former USC commit"

This is NOT a Notre Dame thing, it's a confused kid thing.

“I’m excited about coaching those guys that we signed, and Eddie being one of them. I’m excited about him reporting in June with his classmates, and I can’t wait to develop him into an excellent football player.”

Elston today at a silent auction in Ft. Wayne. Fwiw.

Never, ever did I think I'd see this. Atta boy, TP. It's one thing to be in "the know". It's quite another to antagonize everyone that they were sitting on info and coming out like know it alls in the end when the info is already out. Hell...I knew Japan was going to bomb Pearl Harbor.....Yes, I was 32 years from being born, but I know a guy.

Sounds like something he was instructed to say if anyone brought up the situation..

This clearly is karma biting us in the *** for picking on Cyclone fans.

I knew trash talking Bret Oberg would bite everyone in the ***! Anyhow, make him come and play QB on the scout team. He could wear one of those red hats and everything..

Why the Hell can't I post images?

You are not doing it right. Got to do it from something like Photobucket where you can get the img string. Last one under the little gear icon. Then paste it in the reply box.

I'm jumping into this thread late, but....

If Kelly is at fault for anything in this situation, it's that he seems to put in a lot of effort into these high profile recruits that either appear to be prima-donnas or indecisive. I'd rather see him focus on the studs that are completely understand what ND has to offer (Jaylon) or spend more time evaluating / recruiting the next tier of recruits after that elite level.

The entire recruiting practice in college football is so backwards. The sports media just spoon feeds the top guys into thinking they are god's gift to the world and it ends up with them being self-centered and indecisive.

Not saying that's what happened here with EV, just my rant for the day. The past few years have really soured me on the fun of recruiting.

So he's probably going to sit out a year while still getting to practice at UCLA and have to pay to go to school for a year? Then he gets a scholly and has 4 years remaining and there's no way for us to prove UCLA maintained contact after he signed his NLOI?

Known for a month that "he was leaving"? You literally posted this yesterday an changed your "prediction" today. The reality is that you read the same stuff everybody else read on the rivals board and didn't actually think he was leaving until, at best, yesterday.

There are dozens of people on this board that saw the rumors and didn't say anything, but once there was enough smoke someone was bound to mention it. It wasn't "letting the cat out of the bag". It was simply regular Joe info making it onto the main board. At any given time there is always some transfer rumor floating around, most of the time there baseless. Unfortunately for us, this one wasn't. But it is fun reading you grasping at straws in hopes of being the insider on this one.

Back to sitting on my porch watching the storm roll in. Couldn't resist really.

solid choice Bogs, gotta love some Otis Redding. A song just isn't a song without an extended whistle break.

BK is going for the best of the best and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose in situations like this. And you can't always tell whether or not an 18 or 19 year old kid "gets" ND. They may say all the right things but not truly understand what an awesome place ND is. And with EV, we came to the party late with him and still landed him. It's not like Kelly spent over 2 years throwing everything at this kid in hopes we would land him. Kelly knows that the only way ND can compete with the Alabama's of the world is to go (hard)after guys like EV, Max Redfield, Stephon Tuitt, etc and pray like hell that they come to ND. We will win a lot of games with the guys we have on the current roster but to start winning championships, we need more guys like EV and the others I mentioned. No team is going to have nothing but 5 star talent but you need a healthy mix (4-5/cycle) sprinkled in with a lot of 4 and 3 star guys to get to elite levels. If we could land 2-3 blue chip players on each side of the ball per recruiting cycle, then we will begin to compete year in and year out for a NC. This last recruiting cycle is a perfect example. We ended up with 3 5star players on D and 1 on offense. We did the job on D but came up a little short on offense. But both Elmer and Montelus were both close. On Rivals, the 5 star guys are all rated 6.1 (or maybe higher but I know 6.1 to start) and Elmer and Montelus were rated 6.0, the highest of the 4 star guys, and both in the top 10 for their respective positions. So though we hate having things like this happen, I don't think Kelly should stop recruiting the best players as long as they meet the academic requirements and are not thugs.

Recruiting's gone completely insane (and will get worse if LOIs get thrown out the window), but it's by no means just "the media" that is giving these kids an inflated sense of themselves.
They are getting seriously wooed, for years, by grown-*** men who earn six and seven-figure salaries, followed by thousands of strangers on Twitter, and their every utterance is parsed by people like us on hundreds of message boards like this. Certainly the recruiting media plays a role, but it's a lot deeper than that. And, at the risk of sounding overly old-school, too many of these kids lack adults in their lives who are willing/able to help them keep some perspective on all this.
What's funny is that, by the standards of elite recruits, Vanderdoes has generally seemed to have a pretty good head on his shoulders. Hopefully he still does.

A bit off topic but after a few fingers of wild turkey I was thinking of how all the unreal situations the last 3 years is seasoning Diaco. DC/assist HC at Notre Dame, working long term under one of the best coaches in the country (I believe Kelly is the best), and taking these recruiting battle scars with him....look out when he is running his own ship!

UCLA in-state tuition with room and board is north of $30K a year. Maybe his family can swing that, I've no idea. But it's not nothing.

Honestly though if ND and FSU don't stop Vanderdoes and Thomas and make them sit out a year, it very well could set a precedent that it is possible to change your school post signing day without repercussions. That's not something I'm very interested in.

So is this right? I feel like people keep saying ND holds all the cards, but I don't understand how that's possible.

If you told me I'd only have to pay that amount for 4-5 years worth of a college education and put myself in a position to play big time CFB during that span, maybe even make the NFL...You take that no matter what....It's really tough to debate.

This is what I was trying to get at in my post. And again, it really may have nothing to do with Vanderdoes decision.

The point is that recruiting in general is *** backwards and it really frustrates me because it is essentially the opposite of how I would handle a high profile recruitment (or any other decision in my life). These kids don't understand the meaning of a commitment. They told the coaches they were coming, and they stopped recruiting other players because they were counting on that promise. If you aren't sure then don't make the choice until you know.

If I've learned anything in life it's that no matter where you are or what you're doing the grass is ALWAYS greener. I'm sure EV might've remembered the great things about UCLA, but the bottom line is that he made his commitment to ND. Stick to it.

On a side note, this doesn't seem to happen as much in basketball recruiting. I think CFB would benefit from an early signing period.
