I don't get why we would waste our time.

Because we need D-linemen like USC needs a coaching change. 17 year olds are incredibly influencible (is this a word)? You never know. Being #1 in everything and beating his current team on the road might make him interested.

How are we going to fit a dlineman into this class?

Mattingly is taking visits (visited UCLA this weekend I believe), so his spot is up for grabs. I'd give it to Vanderdoes if he wanted to commit. I love Mattingly but with four LBs and and a TE (maybe 2, including Matuska) in the class already, we need an elite DL way more than an OLB/utility big skill like Mattingly.

There's more room than we might think.

This is my own opinion, but I don't see why Keil would want to sit the next 3 years.

Nix may consider the NFL depending on his grade.

I will not miss Calabrese at all if it means bringing in an elite D-lineman for the next 4 years and I think Kelly/Diaco would agree.

Jamel James is looking, Mattingly is looking, Hangratty might be on medical scholly.

Mattingly's spot would open one spot up, but we are already in with much better prospects than Eddie. We don't have enough for those. I just don't see us using one of our last spots for a guy like Eddie, regardless of position.

Losing Mattingly and filling it with Eddie would be a net loss... there... I said it.

Last I checked, there's still spots available. Until AQM, Redfield, Treadwell, Folston, etc verbals, the doors are open...

Is there literally any of those guys that you listed that you would pass over to take Eddie?

I wouldn't...

And what if none of them want on board? Or alternatively- have you considered need vs. want at all here? Nix won't be around forever and nothing is guaranteed regarding the '14 class. I think this is a case of the staff doing, at the very least, their due diligence in making sure we're not caught with our pants down come NSD. Odds are this kid won't sign with us, but nothing wrong with the staff covering their proverbial butts.

Personally, I'd take an elite d-lineman over anyone besides Tredwell.

Remember back to our first fight, wooly? When we argued SEC speed on defense? And you made the point that elite d-lineman are what make SEC defenses look phenomenal? I remember ;).

We may not be "in" with Eddie, but that's what the staff is trying to do. There aren't very many DL prospects left on the board who even come close to having his offer list. This kid is elite, imo. There is absolutely no harm in trying to get him to visit and use this momentum to our advantage.

My order, if you're asking:

AQM
Vanderdoes
Redfield
Treadwell
Folston

Edit: I'm still pissed we passed on Schutt. I love having a nasty DL with lots of depth and no dropoff. Keep the bigs coming, imo.

lolwut? Eddie's composite score is .9903; Mattingly's is .8898. Eddie is an elite recruit (he'd be the 2nd highest rated in our class, behind Jaylon) at a position of dire need for us; Danny's a solid utility recruit who's odds of ever starting for us are slim given the other OLBs and TE in this class.

Is there literally any of those guys that you listed that you would pass over to take Eddie?

I wouldn't...

Given our positional needs, Vanderdoes would be more important than anyone left on our board.

Vanderdoes is the 247 Composite#13 player in the nation. He'd be our second highest rated recruit after Jaylon. Redfield, Treadwell and Isaac are the only comparable targets, and of those only Redfield seems likely to come. Or are we in on prospects I don't know about?

Who knows. If we lose two players to career-ending injuries (as Sapp has suggested we might), we give away Mattingly's spot, and Wood goes pro, we could have 5 spots left in this class.

EDIT: Whiskey beat me

This. It's not even close between Vanderdoes and Mattingly. Vanderdoes by a country mile.

Is that a combo of Hanratty and Hegarty?

For those who say they do not want Eddie think about why ND is going to Miami.
