Mattison biggest reason??? NFL creds???

Greg Robinson spent 14 years as a DC in the NFL for Jets, Broncos, and Chiefs. He also served as DC for Texas before becoming HC at Syracuse.

Mattison got pushed out at Michigan in 1997 by Jim Hermann. Hermann's defense allowed less than 10 points per game on the way to a National Championship that year.

Richardson's home state and long time relationship had a lot more to do with the choice.

I wouldn't argue that Richardson being from MI had a lot to do with it, but Mattison has to be pimping himself and his NFL credentials.

I think it has a lot to do with the "what you have you done for me lately" attitude.

Robinson just coached the worst two UM defenses, possibly ever. And preceded that with a woeful 10-37 record at Syracuse.

His time before that was very good, but we're talking about creeping up on almost a decade when Robinson was considered a good coach, or at least successful.

In contrast, I'm sure Mattison is telling kids he's coached at UM before, but you have to think he's all up in their ears telling them he coached Ray Lewis and the Ravens, not to mention won a national title with Florida not too long ago.

That's the kind of pitch that kids will buy (just like Weis saying "I literally just won Super Bowls) and not so much Robinson pitching, "Hey I coached for Kansas City and Denver when you (the recruit) were 7 years old.

Plus, UM's class is 66% defense right now with all of the top players on that side of the ball. Mattison is definitely selling his NFL experience.

What I meant would have been more clear if I had not used the word swing. I was not meaning to compare him to Robinson's recruiting (although the above quoted post addresses that anyway) but Mattison's recent success with the Ravens is absolutely part of why they are doing so well with defensive recruits. 8 of their 12 commits are on defense and ALL of their 4 star kids are defensive players (as mentioned above). Word is that Mattison has been using the "I'll use you the way I used Ray Lewis" line.

He's absolutely using it, but there's much more to it. Mattison is a balls-out recruiter - and always has been. His stint in the NFL has nothing to do with his aggressiveness as a recruiter. (Now, his ability to say "Look at what I did in the NFL" definitely helps".) Mattison has always been a great recruiter, and it looks like nothing has changed.

As for Richardson...even if Mattison weren't there he would have been a tough pull. Kids from that school generally don't come to ND, so even though he liked us, he was going to be a UM athlete from the jump...

Thee staff is relentless. They proved that last year over and over again. Winning will turn the heads of players that are undecided as well as committed elsewhere.

The recruiting season is far from over and things will probably change a million times before it's all said and done. Kids are going to take visits, change their minds or reaffirm their commitments. It's a crazy process as we all can attest to after last year but in the end it all worked out well for us.

I wrote this in Royce's thread, but think it's pertinent to post again here. Neither one of them listed ND as a school that they wanted to visit, either officially or unofficially. If that staff continues to recruit them, then I agree with you in that we shouldn't give up on them completely. I am just saying the mutual interest between ND and these two recruits doesn't seem to be very strong at this point.

Michigan was a loser, under a coaching change and in some turnover. Yet they are hauling in a pretty decent class.

JC tweets from 24/7:

Terry Richardson, CB, Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech

It’s not that we don’t think Richardson, a Michigan commit, is an outstanding football prospect, we just probably have him rated a bit too high. His size is a concern and he’s not as dominant in coverage in this setting as we expected. Still, he has good feet and has the moxie to play the position in college.

Mix that all up with the fact that we can be big and fast on the outside, and . . .

Kelly still looks smart.

He was getting beat often at events earlier in the year, but, for some reason, the services didn't seem to dock him much.

He is 5'9", not physical, and not overly athletic. Greenberry will dominate him and 5'10" FR Corner Blake Countess for years to come.

I've always thought Terry Richardson was one of the most overrated players to start the year. Some services have already dropped him significantly. He just lacks elite attributes... not tall, not physical, not overly fast/athletic. What is there to like?

Then again, I think James Ross for Michigan is really underrated, so it all evens out.

Terry Richardson reminds me of Lo Wodd a lot. I can see James Ross being scUMs version of Greg Jones. Undersized but really physical. I think he should be around #75 and not #150 where most sites have him.

That was never the problem. Tate and Floyd destroyed Michigan too.
