Anybody know if Braxston can come back for a 5th year? I know he played as a freshman but only for like 2 minutes total... Idk what the rules are for medical redshifts but I know it'd be awesome if he could come back.. Might help his draft stock too?

Yes, if you play minimally before suffering a season-ending injury, the NCAA typically grants a medical "red shirt". He's virtually guaranteed to be a 5Y (subject to all the usual caveats about being admitted to a grad program, blah blah blah. I'm not worried.)

Cool... I guess right now it could be too early to tell..maybe he'll have an awesome year and want to enter the draft...idk anything about other centers except for Brewster at Ohio St.

I think if he has a great year like we all think, he could be picked up in the first round--like Faine in '03.

Also, both are/were number 52.

I don't think he is no where in the class as fame. Cave as a player needs to stay for his fifth year. If he has two good final years I could see him going in the second or third round. Centers rarely get picked in the first round and he is not as good as Faine.

Braxton is still learning the position. But he is apparently a person who can take a lot of criticism as Coach regularly lays some on him [especially when praising others but neglecting to say much about him --- Warinner did the same thing the other day ---I think that they're motivating the big man].

Kelly regularly/recently says that they're not playing fast enough. But when you listen closely, he's not laying all of that on Crist and Rees. The only other major candidate for that criticism is the center. I've heard Cave admit that he's still learning those subtleties which speed the origin of the play up.

Whether any of that would make any difference to the pros, who knows? I always remember Kelly's comparison of Wenger and Cave. "When Wenger blocks, he always blocks the right man...but that man doesn't always stay blocked". "When Cave blocks, you stay blocked...but he doesn't always block the right man."

Well hopefully he has a good season and my bears pick him up after stupidly letting Olin Kreutz go...

Is no one listening to me...he is eligible for a fifth year, so he still could play at ND for two more years.

I don't think it is that, I think they are just saying if he has a dominating year this year he could try the NFL.
VBuck wager that if he has a dominant year he will not go to the NFL and if approved by the powers that be at ND will come back for a 5th year.

II is reporting that Cave is lost for the year. Haven't seen anything official from ND. I would be surprised because he was walking up and down the sideline at the game with his helmet on. He looked ok.

Grant Irons played a game or two after sustaining a "shin" injury. Turned out he had a hairline fracture.

Good point. Helmet in hand had me thinking he was lobbying to get back in. I'm digging for link. Just going off a mod from another board right now.

I hope they are wrong. Cave seems like a hard nosed kid though. I learned in high school that some people don't show pain. Had our RB go down. He came off, taped up his knee with a brace, came back in. We ran 42 ice and 41 ice. 73 yards straight ahead, me pounding backers out of his way till he would get 8-10 yards then drop. Was like something out of a movie. Tore his ACL. Couldn't cut or make any side movement. Straight ahead.

Hopefully II is wrong because that would suck. I will wait for an official report from BK.

Next man in.

I hear you and Golic did a helluva job in relief Sat night. I just love Cave and the job the entire O Line has done this year. It'll be a great testament to the coaching job that Warriner and Kelly have done if Golic is able to step in the rest of the way and provide the unified protection that Cave and Co. have given this O thus far. Go Irish!

Happy to see Golic perform so well, but this injury still hurts. Who is next after Golic?

No it is not Heggie

I'll bet that Nuss is doing a lot of snapping in practice this week. Either that or Watt will shift over to center and Nuss will replace at left guard. Watt practiced at Center some last year. I'm talking the back-up plan if Golic too would be dinged.

It would suck if Cave was out for the year because he has been awesome all year.
But Golic is definitely a capable replacement. He looked fantastic on Saturday.
