Right. Williams is in a different galaxy from Bear. Marcel Reed was a much better dual threat guy (at least when we faced him) last season. Maiva, too.

Different QBs for sure, but all those guys could win with their legs. Bear is a decent QB, and can hurt you with his arm, but he needs his legs to complement that.

I think ND is going to implement a plan similar to how they treated Colton Joseph week 1, and do everything they can to take away Bear's legs and make him beat them with his arm. We'll see if he can.
My bad, I misread you quote. I thought you were agreeing. I agree, I think Bear is good but we've faced better.

If I was BYU, the A&M tape would be where I would pull from. Klein does a lot of gimmicky PA and screen stuff too. Difference is Craver and Concepcion are NFL players with a NFL OL holding up.

I think we bring the hammer in all three phases of the game. First real opportunity for a "leave no doubt" game since we were snubbed. BYU will get labeled a pretender and all of CFB will try to defer to the Miami game hoping we get beat to undermine what they all know we are.

If you assume PA and Screens don’t overlap (probably not perfect assumption), Bear has only straight dropped back 50 times, he has a 55% completion in those attempts

I think Bear is better than Reed. Bear was not an early enrollee so he wasn’t given the entire playbook last season. That gave the impression of him being a run 1st, below avg passer IMO. He’s now got the entire playbook to go with 2 good WR & a TE. He will be a pain in the ass IMO much like Riley Leonard was in 2023 for Duke. I also expect him to play his best game to date vs ND. It won’t be like the TCU game.

My only “worry” is that NDs run game is a mirage. If Williams were the #1 I would actually be worried. Establishing the run in a top 10 matchup on someone else’s turf is huge key to winning this game.

Studying their offense more, it’s really the perfect offense for the post-Texas/OU Big 12. Basically you got a thiccc ass QB, good RB and jumbo personnel that does a bunch of horizontal gimmicks to get big dudes in space against DBs that cannot tackle. But that is what the whole system relies on, a bunch of non-NFL players that cannot tackle.

I saw a BYU fan today point out that ND has a porous secondary. We're screwed.
I have heard this a lot from BYU. If this were politics I would think this is a BYU talking point, maybe they are blasting the most elite group in the nation only to QB run all game in 12 personnel.

And the good RB is out

After watching the Tengwall breakdown I am feeling pretty good about our offense getting some chunk plays on the ground and CJ FITFO to move the chains.

Their opponents F+ rankings:

Iowa State ------- 54
TCU -------------- 47
Colorado State ---105
Utah Tech -------- 95
Arizona ----------- 35

Ours are no better but FWIW: Wisconsin 37, MSU 60.

Don't look now but Wisconsin's "gauntlet" run is the next three weeks @UCLA, hosting USC and then @ Iowa. UCLA is ripe with their QB out. BYU might want to worry about keeping it closer than 41-13 to stay ahead the Badgers in the polls.

In case we were wondering where the national media is on this game. College football enquirer said we still won’t know anything about ND after this game because BYU won’t be able to compete.
Somehow we apparently know more about Miami than ND though and they don’t have the same questions about them

UCLA is going down to Wisconsin.

If they go 2-1 the next three weeks they deserve ranking with a posh November of Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, Minnesota making 10-2 finish the most Wisconsin football move imaginable. They would have no business sniffing the CFP but still find themselves in the debate.

"ND hasn't played a game against a team like BYU" - Seen this a lot and the correct response is that they'd be a 2pt neutral field favorite to Wisconsin, who actually has more talent.

We actually would be a larger neutral field favorite against Bama / Texas than BYU would be against Wisconsin.

What I know is we are going to have to wrap and finish tackles on him because he won’t go down easy. When he runs we have to make him feel it.

Only in 10/11 49% of the time. Even though he is their best weapon, it is indeed Glasker that comes off usually for the 12, 21 etc personnel, so you can take Gray off completely in that case.

Lot of PA, lot of screens as mentioned prior.
The play action is a concern, as aggressive as ND’s defense is, they get sucked in on PA a fair amount and I’ve said it before that’s the recipe for success against this secondary

But if BYU wants to try and ground and pound and then dink and dunk with screens all day, more power to them
