Can someone fill me in on the ISD bashing? I listen to them pretty religiously, and from what I’ve gathered, they (as a whole) don’t normally comment on injury news because Freeman is notoriously tight-lipped about that stuff. ISD is also not really a click-baity site. They’ll sit on news or be vague about it if they don’t have clearance to make it public. That’s been their MO for as long as I’ve known Mike and Jamie.

Take today, for example. You had reporters recently headlining that Porter was close. Boom, post it. It gets clicks. But Mike and Jamie basically said, “Close to what? Practicing with the team? Doing individual work isn’t practicing with the team, so how can we consider him close to seeing the field?” That seems like a pretty reasonable take. Am I missing something?

ISD also has legit recruiting contacts, and Christian has been a known commodity for years.

Jamie has been applauded for his film reviews.

Mike...is Mike. But one thing I’ve always respected about him is that he’s consistent. He’s an old-school guy who loves smash-mouth football. He’s a fan just like the rest of us and wants to see ND succeed. Some of his biggest complaints are about topics that have been talked about on this site ad nauseam. He’s quite literally “one of us.” I’m not sure why there’s beef with the guy who puts the fan in fanatic.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but of all the media talking heads, ISD seems to hit more than they miss.
It's as I stated.

ISD is pretty damn good at what they do. But when it comes to injuries, it's as you said, they are very non-committal regarding injuries. They aren't going to go out on a limb too much.

Nothing wrong with that.

But Mike does this a lot, where they take a very conservative or non-committal stance and then when the news comes out he likes to frame it as if he tried to tell everybody this and that, when in reality, he kept it as vague as possible.

If you're going to be non-committal, that's fine. But don't try and take victory laps when you didn't earn it. Mike does that a lot. Not just with injuries, but with a lot of stuff that comes out that ISD was intentionally conservative or vague about.

I read ISD and listen to their podcasts regularly, and they are "non committal" in the sense they do not make definitive statements. However if you're familiar with their verbiage, the messaging was pretty clear since Spring that Porter was not close and they didn't expect him to contribute this year.

Fair points. I can understand that criticism. I just don't get bothered by it personally. I still feel like ISD is head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to reporting fairly and without the click-bait “catastrophic” or “9-11” type headlines.

The “I told you so” persona doesn't really detract from the ultimate headline, which is that Porter is done for the season. And if we're comparing the beat on this particular situation, ISD seemed to have the best feel for what was actually going on. Nobody can predict setbacks, but there's a pretty big difference in how some of the others were handling the information leading up to the surgery announcement.

I don't see it as non-committal as all. ISD seems to be the one media outlet that actually attempts outside validation of information. They said back in the spring "other programs told us they don't think he'll ever play football again."

When Hansen's report came out, they stuck by what they said and pointed out that Porter was only going to begin individual activities. Everybody was windmill dunking on ISD at the time. Now the facts actually played out and they're as ISD said. I don't like the victory lap either, but mostly because it's a very negative prognosis on a young man's football career. That being said, these guys know their stuff and actually work to get outside confirmation of facts. They aren't hot take artists like basically everybody else on the beat.

The question was: is he contractually obligated to play at ND for the 2027 season? The question was not: will he be at ND no matter what for the 2027 season?

There are no contracts that force anyone to do anything. Obviously contracts can be broken--for a penalty. Specific performance is almost never a remedy for a breach. You do not need to educate me on contract law. I'm a practicing attorney.

All I want to know is if he is under contract for 2027.
My bad man, I thought you were using the dictionary definition for the word obligate.

Apparently being responsible and not prognosticating on someone's return when you haven't seen medical records let alone examined the kid is now being a vague pessimist.

Some Porter talk on the latest II podcast:

Brice was told by people around OSU that OSU wanted to keep Graham but didn't have much interest in keeping Porter. They weren't quite sure what was going on with him and what his future would be.

Sampson said ND was "desperate" at WR (assuming he means after missing out on Marsh). They took a gamble on projecting what unproven players could become.

Prister doesn't know if ND will want Porter as part of the equation moving forward. He doesn't know what his contract is in terms of the years.

O'Malley believes Porter isn't making anything close to what has been put out there. He said that Reed Harris, who they believe ND should've gone after, is making around 725K at ASU. He didn't say, but it sounds like he was told that as he repeated it 2-3 times.

Who pays for the surgery? Is it ND, OSU where he got hurt?, or is it his own insurance?

This goes for any player that gets hurt, how/who foots the bill?

This is generally my opinion too. I know what some other "key" players are reported to be getting in NIL / rev share and it seems implausible to me that they paid him $2M.

Personally, I say let him bounce after this year.

I think that's crazy talk. In April he'll be 8 months removed from this latest surgery. August he'll be 11 months removed. ND doesn't grow 6'5" 5* boundaries on trees and we likely get a discount on him in year 2. Doubt any team is going to come calling hard.

Brice that quite a few of the players who transferred in the offseason were asked to take a heavily reduced deal to return.

Assuming it's not a multi-year deal, I think at the very least that he is going to be asked to take a reduced deal. It's still early, but I imagine the same will be true for Greathouse. Jagusah is another one that came to mind, but I can't see him having any market. His NIL deal is probably very cheap, or at least it will be next year.

ND tries to structure deals year-to-year and to fit the role. They want key players making the most money, they do not want guys starting who are making substantially less than someone below them on the depth chart. One of the reasons ND has so little turnover relative to other schools is because they don't make the mistake of over-paying for mediocre transfers or locking up tons of money with HS recruits. They pay really good, near top of market money for HS players but it's better thought of as a signing bonus than some long term contract. Then if they think a guy is a hit, they are going to pay him near market rates to stay, so there isn't too much incentive to leave for most of these guys. You will notice that the guys that was out are mostly either 1) younger guys buried on depth chart 2) older guys getting passed up by someone younger and they can get a better "finish their career" deal from another school where they can start.

ND is certainly not perfect and would love "do overs" but that applies to every team both college and pro. No one gets them all right.

It really depends on his asking price. If he has a realistic world view, given his injury history and how some schools projected his career over, he'd be wise to take the deal ND offers and get that Notre Dame degree. I don't think ND would be the highest bidder. Someone will always overpay.

Total NIL compensation ≠ amount paid by school.

I think people (agents, schools, beat) give different answers based on what they want the argument to be as to how much school is paying. I think you’re playing at semantics if your school has a bevy of known NIL partnerships that you funnel players to but don’t count that when you are asked what a player is getting paid. This is why you get reported NIL numbers like $40 million and then schools laugh at like no it’s not that amount.

I really don't get this mindset. We don't even know what his updated timeline is post-surgery, his asking price for next year, or who would take his roster spot.
Look man if you're not trying to sell low, you can't be a member of the ND Fans Bedwetters Club

LOL, this is great. It's now bedwetting to have an opinion that in the now semi pro model, someone doesn't want to waste a spot or NIL money on someone not likely to play. But again, some of you will hold out hope to the very end for any former 5* wideout.

I just think it's weird to take such a definitive stance when we know nothing about his availability next year or his price. To put it another way, let's say there's a 40% chance he recovers and is able to play next year. Assuming similar NIL deals, would you rather have him or Cam Williams on the team? What about Jack Larsen? I don't necessarily know the answer to that question, but thats sort of the point.

Right now him and Cam Williams are the same. 5*s, and likely never going to play for one reason or the other. Do i know it for a fact, no. I'm just going by what is known and thats it was apparently a real bad injury. We can use his spot and money to go after another wide out if needed. 40% chance...I'm definitely taking Cam and Larson over Porter.

For what little it’s worth ISD has claimed Cam Williams has been banged up all year. Now ISD thinks anyone who gets hurt has to retire so again tifwiw.

Wow, really? All they could say is "since he's getting his degree and is buried on the depth chart he is a prime transfer candidate."
