In the Brian Kelly playoff era, the ND teams would have WR Corps that looked solid against average teams, it's when they matched up against elite competition where it became glaringly obvious that ND lacked that playmaker on the outside. You could predict when ND would play an Alabama, Clemson, some USC defenses, etc and the opponent would play man and stack the box and Ian Book would have no options.

With the expectation that this squad win a national title, that is what is making people nervous. Now it's only week 2, so I am not panicking at all. But man they really need some 350+ yard games for Carr to shine. Running the ball and dumping to TEs and Faison will not win a title against an elite defense. Clearly Wisconsin was playing two high to challenge ND's run game, and it worked for a half.
Book’s arm played a role in that too - maybe an even bigger role than the receivers. He couldn’t take the top off a defense. If Book had a bigger arm, I’m fairly certain Claypool could have hunted down a lot of 50/50 balls in 2018.

Carr has a bigger arm and throws a nice deep ball. That alone forces defenses to play more honestly, even if we don’t have an AA catching his passes.

This and if they had so much faith in the young guys then why aren't any of them getting a shot? All we heard last preseason was how good Burress looked and this preseason Fitzgerald was tearing everyone up.
Probably route running and/or blocking

Is that all we heard? You didn’t hear the OC say he “is incredibly frustrating because from a skill level standpoint, he’s elite. He understands football. He understands how to break people down in space, but I can’t quite get him to learn and master the playbook quite yet. So I can’t get him lined up enough as consistently as I need to, for him to actually show the talent that he’s got.”

NDs playbook is extremely complex and they run a full route tree. It’s not an offense you just step in and learn to run vertical or comeback.

The fact we are debating whether the WRs are championship level after 1 game is making me slam my head into the wall.

Will Pauling was a JAG at this point last year, Faison was a spunky lax player, Fields had one nice catch and a terrible fumble. Certainly possible that not a single player elevates their game but that totally goes against history and logic.

Then make it simplistic zero reason why guys should be waiting 3 years to see the field. Why can a guy like Toney step in and make a difference right away? Or look at USC their top 5 WR's are Freshman and SO's.

Wisconsin was pretty much playing cover 3 and 4 most of the game they didn't want to get beat over the top. People just want to bitch and moan with a 28 point win because it wasn't a blow out in the first quarter which if you watch any sort of college football or almost never is anymore unless it's a really shitty fcs school. Less possessions because the clock not stopping like it used to and guess what Wisconsin might not be great but they are a decent team probably will win 7-8 games this year

I’m likely overreacting but Quincy maintaining his health & being a force on the boundary is something we might need heading into the BYU/Miami portion of the schedule & eventually the playoffs.

Ideally, the staff gives him another 5 weeks here to get healthy, he gets a tune up against Stanford & off we go into BYU with a legitimate big body deep threat.

Missing out on Marsh was unfortunate.

I’m not trying to jump on the Bud Elliott “ND doesn’t have a guy” but compared to last year with Fields being a deep threat, Faison at the field & Love/Price in the backfield we are glaringly less explosive as an offense.

Faison is a threat with the ball but if Gilbert or any of the freshman can’t threaten the deep ball we’re deleting an entire dimension.

Aneyas & James showed themselves to be productive on the ground & in the air especially in the 2nd half but I don’t think either one will be known as a HR threat by the end of this season.

They’re going to need a viable threat with the deep ball at some point.. Most certainly in the playoffs.

So again.. having the right chess pieces in place this year feels so important for CJ being that he’ll need to sustain longer drives more often.

Maybe I’m overlooking Gilbert? But year 3 in the program and…. Also, wtf Cam Williams? We really couldn’t afford top 100 WRs not developing.

The room is deep.. so maybe we see Bettis or Burris emerge?

Am I thinking too far ahead?
Or, maybe, it was a vanilla game plan which was upgraded to French Vanilla in the 2nd half.

Michigan won the Natty with Roman Wilson as WR1.
Yep, I recall he won Nike Camps "Fastest Man" Award in the 4.3s, former state champ and 4⭐ recruit. He was also was a 3rd Rd pick and will be starting for an NFL team this year. I'd gladly take that right now.

Difference is our Roman Wilson types are likely on the bench and not playing instead of being ready to contribute right now for some reason.

Just gonna leave this here. It seemed to me Wisconsin was dead set on sitting in quarters and keeping everything in front of them. They got cooked when they went to man. Not a single concern for me

Pretty much, which is a valid point because it's hard to go into the deeper 3rd when the opposition's is sitting in two high safety looks.

We have played one game. If by UNC we still haven't seen these guys, I'll start to get concerned.

I think the way the argument is being framed, which this is just what ND in the media cycle deals with, is the mind numbingly stupid part. Most rational ND fans would have zero problem with this statement: Offense struggled early, looked better in the 2H, still looking for who emerges opposite Faison but solid Week 1 win. Great! The idea that the Wisconsin game is proof of a material downgrade or change from a week ago before everyone played is crazy. People that had us as title contenders a week ago are stepping back from it. Prister called it a “911” situation.

View attachment 3064660

The “pitch” for ND as a title contender was never that we had better WRs than OSU or Oregon. It was never that the RBs are Love/Price. It is Carr, it is the OL, it is every single position on defense, particularly the #1 secondary and much improved DL. It is the coordinators and mostly importantly it is Freeman. All the same.

Right!

It’s been one game - ONE GAME!!!

After two games last season not a single person would have projected ND to be a title contender. By the end of the season many thought that if we got into the playoffs, we would have won it all.

This is the one thing I hate about the playoffs. Every week is an indication of whether a team is going to win the CFP or not. Let the season play out. Savor each and every victory. Take joy in watching your team make improvements as the season moves on.

One 28 point win against a P4 team and we are at 911 level angst? Ridiculous.

@Dale Notre Dame had a lot of explosive plays on offense last year, correct?

Fickell and Tressel saw this on film. Denbrock's game is the power running coupled with explosive pass plays. Wisconsin schemed accordingly. They coached with Denbrock at Cincinnati. They all go back.

Some addled yokels might empty the entire playbook in the first half of the first game. There was no need for that. Thankfully this program has guys smarter than that calling the shots.
I believe the one of the assessments of Carr before the game was that he misses on intermediate routes a bit too much. I’m guessing Fickell agreed with this and decided to take away the deep passing attack and screen game.

Further on your one game point. The week ND beat Miami (OH) in 2024, Sampson said that watching Georgia vs Alabama was like watching a different sport because of the talent descripencey compared to the Irish

Pauling and Fields had proven production. Besides Faison, none of the others on this roster have it. That is the difference between last year and this year. Several have been on the team for a few years and have yet to show they can become productive. You can name Greathouse if you want. Sure, he did some good stuff in one game in the playoffs but he has been here for a few years and hasn't shown much else, definitely not consistent production.

I'll be concerned if one of them doesn't step up next week. Brown had a reputation for developing WRs when he was hired. I haven't seen it yet.

We didn’t make any explosive plays last year week 1 either. By the end of the year we had to be one of the more explosive offense in the nation. I have faith that we have enough guys on the outside. I think once the new tackles get some experience it will allow more time for deeper throws to develop.

Wisconsin was not going to allow us to take deep shots they know that CJ is great at that. They made us prove we could move the ball on passes underneath and running the ball.

Valid point but the production was at lower tiers. Most disliked the Pauling pick up, he was not good at Wisc the year before he got here.

I agree that Greathouse has to start to come on, I just am not going to relegate him to the end of the bench after 1 game. Maybe he will never get back to where we want him to be, but his ability to win against actual talented DBs (OSU, PSU) is at least something. If we are still having this conversation after BYU, it's time to move on and give Graham the larger share of reps.

Doesn't Faison fall into the group that Mike Brown has developed?
And Pauling also, didn't Brown have a huge hand in developing Pauling?

Sure, but Pauling is no longer on the team. I agree with Faison but with the bevy of other WRs on the team, at least one has to step up before the going gets tough.

I mean we have plenty of fast and highly rated WRs? And he was over drafted? But the Steelers saw enough of him to know they had to grab Pittman and draft a WR this year. He’s fine and he was fine in college. But nothing scary.

Not that it really matters but is being a WR3 (at best) on the 2026 Steelers considered a starter?
