Can merckx or anyone else let us know for sure that the extension is on the table and he just hasn't signed it?

Why don’t we hear this stuff about Ryan Day and Kirby Smart every year?

Ryan Day rumors go back years. This is the very first offseason he hasn’t had NFL rumors. He was a candidate for the Bears years before Freeman lol

Disagree here. If they win enough games, not a single NFL team would think twice if they have a difficult personality imo.
Egos, my friend. Happened at SF with Jim Harbaugh and in Nashville with Vrabel. Jimmy and Jerry in Dallas during the 90s is the obvious one if you go a bit further back. Everybody wants control of the roster, wants the lion's share of the glory when things go well. If the franchise QB doesn't like you, the GM and owner then make a decision if it's the player or the coach who go. Multiple scenarios time after time where teams that were winning games broke apart at the top because the hierarchy couldn't get along. It's often a matter of time.

Not sure about Ryan Day. I think if he gave the NFL a go he would not be as good as Poodle but won't be as bad as Urban. If that makes sense. I think he ends up a meddling guy who gets to the playoffs every now and again, never really wins anything and isn't considered great.

Kirby Smart has lived and been employed in the south for his entire life. I can't see a guy like him going to the Giants, Bengals, Raiders, etc. The Carolina Panthers might be too north for him. He grew up in Georgia, played at Georgia and waited patiently for that job to open so he could get it. I think he's where he wants to be. His only non double digit win seasons were his first and Covid. Might not catch Vince Dooley, but he'll catch Mark Richt for wins and already has two titles.

Saban and Meyer both crashed out in the NFL. Two of the more accomplished college winners in recent memory. NFL GMs are going to have reservations about college coaches, and rightfully so.

When will you hit the official panic button for Marcus? For me it’s Jan 2 when the portal opens.
I'm not sure why anyone needs to officially panic at all. Freeman to the NFL isn't a good move for him or for most NFL teams.

But given all the chatter I agree it would be good to have an extension wrapped up and publicly announced before the portal opens, and definitely before the NFL firing/hiring cycle begins in earnest on Jan. 5, at which point the chatter will only intensify.

Right before the New Year's CFP games seems like a good time.

He is still under contract so it's not like we may not have a coach if he doesn't sign. Is their any chance he signed an extension and they don't feel the need to let everyone know? The silence is weird for sure, but I'm still 90% sure he'll be back.

Again, in the grand scheme of things he hasn't really accomplished anything. I can name a hundred coaches that won two big bowl games.

Agreed, do it in a time it will get maximum attention, and make it maddeningly obvious (for any future prospects) that the HC at ND will receive top dollar and full support in all aspects. So if/when Freeman ever moves on, the job is seen as top tier.

NFL Week 17 buzz: What we're hearing on Joe Burrow, the red-hot Jaguars and Pro Bowl rosters

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman's name has been heavily circulated in recent weeks. Here's what I know. Yes, the Giants are expected to have interest in him when the carousel kicks off. But the Titans have done their research, too. And so have a few teams that will either have an opening or potentially could have one. No teams have officially requested to speak with Freeman as of the last time I checked, but if Freeman wants to at least explore the possibility of the NFL via conversations with teams, he will have opportunities to do that. Freeman will take the next few weeks to make that decision.

Remember, he has no NFL coaching experience, so if he does partake in interviews, he'll be in a position to discover whether the nuances of the game are something he wants to entertain. I've talked to a few coaches with ties to Freeman who believe he will stay in college. So his name isn't going away, but that's the latest based on what I've heard.

It’s 2025 and he has an agent. Rumors could be quickly squashed.

Freeman has publicly stated he will be back. Last year we publicly announced an extension and still had Bears talk after.

The reality is even if Freeman says he’s back and signs an extension today, this thread will continue till the NFL teams hires other coaches.

Sure. But a publicly-announced extension would tamp it down considerably.

I'm not particularly worried about this, mainly because it makes no logical sense for Freeman to go to the NFL right now. But I also thought there was no logical way Miami would get into the playoffs and we wouldn't. So what do I know.

And either way, the portal threat is real. If there's even a hint of uncertainty about our coaching situation, other teams will use that to come at our guys, or to beat us for guys we want. Given what's on the table next season, it seems like it would be in everyone's best interest to wrap this up.

Agent: If you do this, you get a bigger bag and become the darling of ESPN and all the sports world not Notre Dame. Bigger market in a major city. Now is your shot. Take it. If you lose at ND next year, the fanbase will just sell you up the river like they've done before.

Friend: If you do this, you kick a University and your team in the nuts when they are down, and more importantly when you are on the cusp of becoming a legend for all time. Yeah, you might ride the high of a new opportunity, but your words about ND and all that you've worked hard to build will ring hollow.
I’m biased like most ND fans & acknowledge the QOL is better in the NFL but if MF wins one natty at ND, he will be on a pedestal very few have stood. If he wins one Super Bowl. Meh. Now if he can win multiple SBs, he’s in rarified air but the odds of doing that after 4 years in college, no NFL head coaching experience & joining a toxic franchise like the Giants or Titans? He’s already making more money than he can spend. I get the ego thing, but I would hope he knows the legendary status he joins if he can do at ND what most say is impossible.

I'm genuinely curious... What is the appeal with him? I guess some people like his meathead football bro catchphrases and facial contortions. The guy is a PR nightmare who flamed out in spectacular fashion, his former players hate him, and he's probably never getting another coaching job at any level again. It's not 2005 anymore, and the game has clearly passed him by.
He’s an asshole and that really appeals to some groups of people in America.
