This **** makes me so angry at corporate America, and I despise the Occupy freaks.

Michigan has been "maize & blue" since the dawn of time, but Nike comes along and copyrights A F*CKING COLOR and now Adidas has to name it something else?

So, so stupid.

I think the color is different, not just the name. You can get trademark protection for a color, although it may be controversial. The Tiffany's blue box is a famous example. Not sure how Nike can have any rights in the color maize though.

It reminds me of the story I read in SI some years back about the Olympic people suing a little Greek restaurant in NYC because they had a name like Olympic Grill.

A really popular diner in my town called "Lexus" Diner was sued by the Lexus car company and they had to change their name to Alexis. It was really popular, basically free positive advertising for the name Lexus so I didn't get it. This maize thing makes a bit more sense though

If you don't protect a trademark you can lose it altogether. It's not that Lexus would actually care about the diner... they're worried about the big picture.

As much as I kinda want to laugh at Michigan, I think the story is more about how stupid it is that you can claim ownership of a color.

I think I'm going to trademark Bang Bang Notre Dame Gang and then sue them.

Good luck negotiating the legal maize. I wish you all the luck in the world. Don't be surprised, though, if it takes a succession of the three blue moons in a year for the case to be certified.

I told one of my Michigan buddies about this and they went into a frenzy and tried to say how it wasn't possible. I don't know all the particulars but he said it means nothing we will always be "Maize and Blue". My response was "Okay, so what happens to the 'Maize Rage' at all your basketball games?" I didn't get a response and lmfao!!!

Pretty sure Michigan's Maize was well established before there was even a Nike. The word Maize is too intertwined in the identity of the university to be undone by Phil Knight and his shenanigans...this shall pass.

Nike owns the rights to call the actual shirt/hat etc color "MAIZE".

adidas calls the technical name of the products on the tafs as "sun".

The adidas Maize is much brighter than Nike's, which I like better.

With what Nike is doing to everyone else uniforms, I don't care if they offer Michigan a ton of money, they can go suck a dick.
