Quin Blanding was the first underclassman named to the Gridiron Kings camp in the event's history.

"It feels great," the defensive back from Virginia Beach (Va.) Bayside said. "It's an honor. It shows all the hard work is paying off."

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound sophomore could play cornerback or safety in college.

"I feel most comfortable at safety," he said. "I feel like I can roam the field and see things coming at me and I'm big so I can also come down and make tackles. That's why I like playing safety."

Blanding was also named the MVP of the defensive backs.

UVA's recruiting him pretty hard. We really need a safety so he would be able to come to UVA and start immediately. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go out of state though. If the SEC comes calling he'll probably go.

At this point for UVA I don't see him going to UVA being this elite. Like you said SEC or of course you have Clemson to worry about.

The one thing we do have going is the fact that Bayside is a pipeline for us. We get a lot of kids from Bayside. That being said, I do agree with you. The kids we get haven't been elite prospects.

You simply cannot count out UVA on any Virginia player with how awesome of a dude Mike London is. Tech used to lock down Virginia Beach... not going to be the case anymore. The only thing that can save Tech from getting overtaken in the next 5 years as the premier football school in Virginia is:

1. UVA is far less likely to take an "undesirable" for the sake of football... whereas Beamer will give Marcus Vick a try... and a second chance... and a third chance....
2. Tech (and their alums) simply give a sh*t more than UVA (and their alums) about football.

This kid was one of the best players at every camp he went to last summer and a junior. Imagine how good he is going to be after another season or two of football and weight training.
