ESPN shows true colors by not inviting #CAA to BracketBusters. Payback for CAA signing deal with NBC.

I for one like ESPN... basically because lets be honest it has changed sports coverage forever. But, this crap is getting old they need to get of their high horse!!

Apologize for not having an article to read on topic. Google Seach gave me nothing believe the news is rather new

Man, that's rough. I like ESPN for the content they provide... never would've thought I'd get to see ND lacrosse nationally televised for multiple games.

But at the same time their "monopoly" and scandal mongering is ridiculous. I'm glad they're finally being challenged.

CAA= Colonial Athletic Assocation

CAA= Colonial Athletic Assocation

For basketball a very strong mid-major conference (VCU, George Mason, Drexel) Just to name a few.
Although VCU, and George Mason are leaving for the Atlantic 10.

Still greatly hinders conferences opportunity to get multiple bids into NCAA tournament by what ESPN has done.

All over a TV deal pretty sad...

I really hope NBC Sports takes off. I loathe MSNBC and NBC's nightly news, but love NBC itself.

If they can just be actual journalists and stop catering to the lowest common denominator like ESPN does, they should be fine. NBC will have to shell out the big cash to slowly start to reel sports onto their network though or it'll all be in vain.

They currently have the Olympics (and the national trials, which i am pumped for), NHL, and MLS. NBC also owns the Golf Channel. That's not a small amount of coverage.

Bottom line is there going to have to shell out to buy rights to the MLB, NBA, or NFL.

I'd like to see them buy the rights to a conference for football, in addition to Notre Dame. Look at it this way:

NBC:
12:00- Team 7 vs. Team 8
3:30- NOTRE DAME
8:00- Team 1 vs Team 2

NBC Sports:
12:00- Team 9 vs Team 10
3:30- Team 5 vs Team 6
7:00- Team 3 vs Team 4

Any certain ten-team conferences out there looking for a TV deal? Big 12? Big East?

That's a brilliant idea actually, and feasible IF they get the right conference to televise.

ESPN is aware of the threat... it sparked a huge bidding war for ACC football which ESPN eventually won.

ESPN is also a part owner of the Longhorn Network which, to anybody else, would be a huge obstacle to getting a Big 12 deal done. In fact, it's been reported recently that ESPN is near to locking up the Big 12 in a huge new contract.

I guess that leaves the Big East. Their deal ends in 2013 so I expect NBC Sports to make a run at it.

NBC Sports does have a share of the Mountain West television contract but I wouldn't be too sure that's going to last. It ends in 2016 and the conference is (not unlike the Big East) continually being picked apart.

Why is it sad? It's business. Would you expect Nike to advertise a college team that was sponsored by adidas?

Like I've said many times, if you have a problem with ESPN, then shut up and boycott it.

That isn't a fair comparison. Nike isn't trying to project themselves as a credible news organization like ESPN.

I don't see your point. Both ESPN and Nike need to make money, and they use business tactics to gain an edge on their competitors. If ESPN doesn't have a TV deal with a given conference, then why should they be expected to televise their games? ESPN is fully within their rights to broadcast whatever games they want. What's even the point of TV deals then?

But who knows? Maybe I'm too pro-corporations...

Wooly's point wasn't the money.

ESPN has become the "Jersey Shore" of sports media, and it's sickening....

Right.

ESPN claims to be a CREDIBLE news agency. How can they be credible if they only report news that benefits them financially? That's not news. Using their contracts to decide what the news is wreaks of unethical journalism.

I fully understand your point, and believe it has substance. However, all I can about are the student athletes in the CAA. The chance for some kids to experience the magic that is a game in the tournament is greatly affected. Just sad that it is because of a money issue, when ESPN has plenty of it.

BracketBusters need to die. I'm glad it's Butler's last year in them. It never does any good besides 2 or 3 of the top games.

and that's Fox's niche.

If NBCsports wants to start competing with ESPN on a serious level they need to do one very simple thing. It's simpler than getting a NFL, NBA, NCAA conference or MLB contract. They need to change their channel. No one goes to the 600's on accident. You don't get any new viewers that way. If they want to compete with ESPN, they need to put their channel right next to ESPN's in the middle of all the other sport channels. Until they do that they can make all the quality programming they want, no one is going to be watching.
