I believe we do need a QB this year because of my vision of things to come...

1. Rees realizes he will never play again and transfers after being option 4 by year end

2.Golson starts struggles a bit but improves over the year and Hendrix comes in with some packages.

3. Whom ever loses the battle between Golson/Kiel transfers ( I would hate this)

4.The QB picture at that time finally becomes clear. Kiel or Golson for 3-4 years with Hendrix backup.

5. Need to groom another stud that takes over when Kiel or Golson get drafted and for depth at that point.

1. By the end of the fall 2012 semester, Rees will be extremely close to getting his degree from Notre Dame. I highly doubt he would forfeit an ND degree for the chance to play somewhere else. This isn't a situation where Tommy needs the snaps to develop a tape for NFL scouts. He does not have a future on the football field as a player beyond college. And what college coach is going to come calling when it is announced that Tommy is transferring. Slow feet, slow release and a body that looks the same as when he wore a Lake Forest jersey is not going to tempt anyone.

Graduating from Notre Dame and walking onto the field for Senior Day on Nov 16, 2013, Rees will be able to hold his head high and know that he was the Irish QB for almost 2 full seasons.

Losing his job this year to Hendrix/Golson and in 2013 to Kiel is not going to burn Rees at all. I think he sees 3 other QBs on the roster who are head and shoulders more physically capable of playing in Kelly's system. On the other hand, he also knows that mentally he has a grasp of the offense better than at least Kiel and Golson. He may not be able to run fast or throw long, but in a pinch if things go to hell, having a backup with at much experience is very valuable. I think he will realize that.

2. I agree. If both these guys can go 2-1 TD-INT, with Hendrix getting a half dozen red zone running TDs, ND will be fine. Their health and ability to improve as the season goes on will pay huge dividends for Kelly because it will allow him to redshirt Kiel in 2012. If Kiel is the real deal, then I have no problem with him starting 4 years. Just imagine if Clausen had the luxury of a year to develop before being thrown to the wolves (or Lions, as it were). Sept. 7, 2013 at the Big House will be a whale of a football game.

3. This is not knowable. We just don't know enough about the inner workings of these guys to know how they will react to competing for job and then losing that competition. Their combination, however, does provide Kelly with an argument to them that they should stay, better than the Hendrix/Golson combo. Kelly can argue that Kiel/Golson compliment each other, and with the pace that he wants to run the offense, 2 QBs would be a great thing.

4. OK

5. Sure

I agree, and reps for the good post. We just don't know enough about these guys in the locker room to speculate on whether they will transfer or not. It's the logical offshoot of the situation, to be sure, but until we see their performance in spring ball and whatnot, we just don't know. And I for one would much more prefer to be the program that has QB's transferring out because of a lack of playing time than a situation where there is no talent or depth on the roster. JMO

Would I be wrong in assuming that he committed to Northwestern?

Next Dan Persa is right, really rooting for Fitzgerald ( one of my fav coaches) and that program. Maybe after Fitzgerald spends 20 years at NW he could get a shot at ND.

Congrats to him. Always good seeing a talented kid considering ND pick against us with another well represented institution. Hope he does well!

Seriously dude? Fitzgerald neg recruits the hell out of ND and has a ridiculous axe to grind (for seemingly no reason) against us.

Are you seriously complaining about the coach at Northwestern of all places. ND and Northwestern really don't even recruit against other. Kelly and his staff negatively recruits against other schools too and anybody who doesn't believe it is delusional. It goes both ways.

When you lose games and your best recruits/players continue to decommit and leave your program it makes it easy to negatively recruit against ND. Don't blame coaches at other schools, blame Kelly.

How many guys have we competed with NW against and lost since Fitzgerald was coach? 1? 2 at the most?

Has everyone forgotten that we play NU soon? Alviti will probably be starting against us.

Not the point. Guy is a total tool. He absolutely hates ND and bad mouths us every chance he gets for seemingly no reason. Like you said, we hardly even compete for recruits. My point is that he simply shouldn't be anyone's "favorite" coach or someone that they "root for" because he is a prick. People just don't see it because he coaches at Northwestern and not MSU, Michigan, Ohio State, etc.

This has literally nothing to do with anything. Your train of thought here is beyond warped. How on earth did you get out of the red?

Pretty close. I think Fitz only got 1 from ND up until last year. Last year we got 2 kids with ND offers (Odenigbo and Malin Jones) vs. 5 that ND got w/ NU offers. Now Alviti. Yes, I realize Alviti wasn't going to go ND after Zaire committed, but I really think we would have gotten him either way. ND is obviously still going to beat NU for recruits more often than not, but it seems to be getting more competitive.

After Gunner committed Alviti was going to go to NW, he was scared by competition

After Malik committed it became all but official

ND stopped recruiting Malin Jones... I dunno if he even ever had a truly actionable offer.

You're right, Alviti likely wasn't coming to ND as soon as we got Gunner Kiel. Or at least it made him stop from committing. And then our staff backed off also... and then we got Zaire... so really I'm surprised it even took this long for him to commit to NW.

I also think it's a fantastic choice by Alviti. He'll likely shine in that offense and get an extremely elite education to boot.

Are you honestly trying to tell me ND stopped recruiting Malin Jones before he committed to NU... in October of his junior year?

And yeah, of course the only reason you would ever lose a recruit to lowly NU is because they're scared of the competition at big bad ND. Yeesh. I come here peacefully answering a question posed by one of your posters and this is the kind of response I get. Get over yourselves.

Look through this board Alviti had a negative response to Gunner committing

My (The) Alviti timeline

Top 2 of NU and ND

Kiel commits to ND

Alviti "expanding" his list

Zaire commits to ND

Top 2 of NU and MSU

Commits to NU

lol, one player wont be enough for Northwestern to beat us... dont go all crazy on us because we are happy for a great kid to go to a great school after we already got a top prospect for the same position. Seriously, Alviti may be good, but ND is the superior team at every position... including QB.
