You should assess a coach and his program every year. I think it's fair to say that most ND fans hoped for better than 16-10. The outlook is good, but the on-field results thus far haven't been great. Unlike the end of last year, when we had a four-game winning streak and great recruiting results, ND football is currently at a standstill. The jury's still out on Kelly, so I think the doubters have just as much reason on their side as those who have complete faith in Kelly.
Personally for me, my disappointment doesn't equal condemnation, and I just hope that fans aren't too cemented in their opinion of Kelly to not change it depending on this upcoming season. Just let the results speak for themselves, so to speak.

THIS .. we didn't settle on kelly.. the jury is still out on him and I'm sure he'd agree he hasn't accomplished all he wanted to in his first two seasons, but by no means is he a bad coach.. he might not be as good as Meyer or Saban, but I think that's because he has less "scumbag" in him than those two.. I've gone back and forth in my head over this, but I think I've settled on the fact that I couldn't root for my program as passionately if my team's coach was a complete scumbag.

It isn't really a fair thing to do, comparing Kelly to Saban or Meyer. As I pointed out in another thread referring to over signing, Saban and Meyer play by different rules. To think that Kelly wouldn't have a better record now w greater opportunities for success if he was allowed to essentially sign an extra class each 4 years is ignorant at best. The academic standards by which ND lives is not an excuse, but the numbers they allowed to sign per class is a competitive disadvantage. Apples and Oranges.

I'm a Kelly fan, but let's all be honest, he wasn't the first choice. He is, I believe a good fit, has a high ceiling, and was an up and comer.
That said, it's important to realize two things.
One, he walked in with sub-par talent in some areas, and under developed talent in most others. He did get a couple rock stars like Teo, Floyd, and a few others. In short, a project in itself. Add in the fact he had to change the superbowl country club culture.
Two, ND hired him knowing full well he would change both the O and D schemes. A good portion of the existing kids did not fit the new schemes. Changing schemes on both sides of the ball while bringing kids in that fit those schemes takes at least 4 years to truly complete the transition.
You do have to review and grade your coach every year. No doubt about it. but you do have to consider the larger picture and the state of the program inherited.
I'll give Kelly the grade of a B overall for the last two seasons given the cards he had to play. The only thing I would strongly question is the penalty numbers. Just horrible. He has to do a better job in that space. It's somewhat understandable given the scheme changes, but some were just unacceptable. Other things, although not directly his fault, are the QB situation and turnover issues. In my opinion they go hand and hand. He's got to figure that out this year. Had he solved for this issue last year, a BCS nod was certainly possible.
Overall, we need to take a breath, and see how this pans out in 2012. Brutal schedule, but if Golson or Hendrix step up, we could see substantial progress, and a special 2013. It is a process, and if we think it happens overnight,,,,, welll then, we just aren't very smart people..

I believe he hasn't set a visit up yet after having to cancel this past weekend. But I would assume on the 24th.

By the time the spring game has come and gone, I think we will have picked up two or three more commitments. I know that's not exactly an outlandish guess, but it's what I'm feeling.

Notre Dame should be absolutely commited to championship level football. Over the past 20 years they clearly have not been, which is unacceptable.
I don't care if opposing teams' fans think my coach is a scumbag or not. This is football, not canasta.

Kelly is a great coach and I fail to see how some of you are underrating Kelly. When Notre Dame hired Kelly, he was the hot coach after what he did with the Cincy program. I cant think of any coach that I would have taken over Kelly 2-3 years ago. Kelly has completely revitalized a horrible defensive unit in 2 years time and he is one decent QB away from having a solid offense. People hating on Kelly are just fools... period.

People who have not noticed some epic boners that Kelly has pulled are blind homers. The jury is still out on Kelly . 16-10 after 2 years and next years schedule then we will see were he stands. So far I am have not been overwhelmed with his coaching ability.
The QB situation last year was a joke. Not calling for his head I am just saying you can't say that he is a great coach either.

I'm a Notre Dame fan. But Bama and OSU are more commited to championship level football.
I think ND has taken some steps in the right direction as they were in the dark ages 10 year ago.

In my opinion, a great post! BTW, how much does Kelly have to do with the revitalization of the defense compared to Diaco and the defensive positional coaches? It seems like Kelly spends the majority of his time with the offense...

Christ Petersen was up there as far as "The Guy" 2-3 years ago.. I agree, people that hate on Kelly are fools.. but I also think people blindly loving him and saying he's great are jumping the gun a little bit.. I'm giving him a couple more years before I hate/love him.. he's my team's coach right now, and I support him, but it's too early to be in love with him IMO

Inquiry to the mods: since this is the "Who is likely next?" thread, is there some way to give these obsessive bashers their own thread to continuously whale away at the Coach and let the rest of us tune into threads that are about their titles??

We have a serious need in the O-Line however, which Kelly/Hiestand ought to be able to sell effectively, and an aggressive opponent [Michigan] who should be filled there to get out of our way. Whether that might point to a Bivin, Pocic, McGlinchey etc I'll leave to my betters to prognosticate.

Who hired Diaco & co.? Who made it a priority to recruit elite defensive talent? Kelly's the head coach. The CEO. The whole program is on him, good and bad. That's how it works.
No idea who's next, but it would sure be nice to button up a couple more before the end of spring practice, mostly so we don't have a summer's worth of fretfulness from the peanut gallery.

I know this has been covered in many other threads, BUT without over signing, JUCO's, pulling scholarships of the injured and underperforming, lowering educational standards and walking over the 20 hour rule, changing the culture of a program will take time. I have no desire to see Notre Dame change any of this so we just need to realize that this is a process. It is easy for Saban to look like a genius signing 110 kids in four years and bringing in JUCO's to fill holes. I am asking anyone to name schools that do things the right way that are a better team than us. I will give you Stanford (for the time being). scUM has escaped us the last two years but I think we were/are the better team. Who else would you rate higher than us?
