With our recruiting class falling 3-4 players short who do we think will get the 5th year?
Do we have 9 available or does Amir count against us this year?

I talked with John Goodman's dad and he is for sure getting the 5th year. Good thing too, considering the DG decommit.

Amir counts against the scholarship cap, so in total, we have 76 total recruits.

I think at most six players will come back as 5th years: KLM, Slaughter, Cave, Goodman, Golic Jr., and possibly McCarthy.

Kelly said he wants to leave a few spaces available in case of transfers or deserving walk-ons.

If the 6 come back would it hurt to have 2 more?

Probably not, but who will come back? Hafis Williams and Anthony McDonald? Both were passed on the depth chart by younger players. Brendan Newman, Lane Clelland and Deion Walker never really played, and Poz was just a special teamer.

If we bring back 6, giving us 82 schollies, Kelly just may leave the number at that.

Dan Murphy has a few more details up ... apparently it's only unofficial because these six players have not been formally admitted to graduate programs, but Kelly expects to have all 6 back. More to come.

Kind of interesting ... I was thinking it would be Hafis Williams instead of McCarthy. McCarthy is a great athlete though and if the staff thinks he can step into Harrison Smith's shoes, that's fantastic. Williams would only be coming back for depth, anyway, and we have 10 DL without him. Probably enough, though I'd like one or two more.

btw, Murphy also says Salvi is officially coming back and on scholarship for 2012. Because he transferred from Butler he hasn't graduated yet, so he is not waiting to hear from a grad program. By my count Salvi plus the other six makes 84. One extra spot for a transfer.

Score...bringing back two safeties is awesome! If McCarthy can stay healthy him and Motta can play the backend. That gives Slaughter the chance to roam around. Slaughter could play both safiety positions, overhang LB and a CB spot.

Sucks that Haffis didn't get invited back and Cywner didn't want to come back.

Best of luck to all the seniors who didn't get a 5th year.

If we bring 6 back as well as Salvi getting a scholarship, wouldnt we have one remaining scholarship?

By my count that would be (by class)
5th years - 7
seniors - 15
Juniors - 19
Sophomores - 25 (includes Prestwood and Carlisle)
Freshmen - 18 (including Badger here because he has 4 years of eligibility left)

7+15+19+25+18= 84

So does Notre Dame usually have one free schollie or will he use it for another 5th year?

Kelly said in his NSD presser that he would keep one space available in case of a transfer.

Keep in mind any career ending injuries (the surgery/rehab guys) usually get acknowledged at or around the Spring Ball Presser and there could be transfers out after Spring Ball from those not liking the post B&G Depth Chart. Then there's the unknown ResLife and Academic Eligibility factors.

^ How often does stuff like that happen? Do you expect at least one or two a year?

And I've heard rumors that Roberson's injury may be serious enough to threaten his career. I think TT had heard that people have seen him still limping. Hope the reports are exaggerated or untrue. Haven't heard how Hardy is doing.

There is a chance that Roberson and Jake Golic may never play football again. If true, I but Roberson and his family are happy he can fall back on his ND degree and still get a free ride in college.

Notre Dame football notebook: Irish coaches on board with Neal's transfer - southbendtribune.com
By ERIC HANSEN
South Bend Tribune Staff Writer

The six fifth-year candidates who will be taking grad classes, if approved by the Faculty Board on Athletics, are center Braxston Cave, defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore, safety Jamoris Slaughter, wide receiver John Goodman, center Mike Golic Jr., and safety Dan McCarthy

Fifth year candidates begin to emerge | Inside the Irish

...

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the return of McCarthy. In mid-November, it appeared that McCarthy was preparing himself for life after football, with the finance major ready to tackle the job market in his senior profile by the university’s school newspaper The Observer. But with the Irish recruiting class coming up short on a few targets, McCarthy will add veteran depth in the secondary, a position grouping that’s losing three of four starters and needs to replace captain Harrison Smith.

It’s been mentioned before and bears mentioning again that McCarthy’s older brother Kyle, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, was a near anonymous special teams player until his senior season, when he ascended into a starting role and then captained the squad during his fifth year. With new safeties coach Bobby Elliott getting his first look at the depth chart, there’s a chance McCarthy could battle for the nickel job and capitalize on the athleticism that made him the high school player of the year in Ohio his senior season.

Arnold posted a list of the projected 2012 Roster with his article.

To the extent anyone may find it helpful, here's an early draft of the new roster.

I've moved Niklas to TE since there are "official" rumors to that effect, but I've not yet incorporated other potential moves: Farley to CB, Russell and/or Riddick as (pure) RBs, GAIII to WR, etc.
