Now we have a legitimate game breaker like Denard Robinson on the field- I think Atkinson and Carlisle can do the same-make one person miss and bye bye for a big gain. Hopefully Theo and Cierre get motivated like Jonas and stop dancing in holes, otherwise its Davonte and George taking over. The competition will make them all better!!!!!

You must not have seen the 5am workouts or the entire season last year???

Why does it seem Cierre Wood is so underrated? He rushed for 1000+ last year splitting carries. Cierre is our guy and imo nobody on the roster including neal is going to come in and take his spot or even challenge him...not a chance. Thats no disrespect to neal or anyone else but cierre is a beast and given another year under his belt and longos workouts, he is going to be a gamebreaker. 1500+ rushing yards this year, mark it down.

Would I be wrong in thinking that for the first time in a while we have some serious speed at the wide out position? Neal, Brown, and Daniels are all 4.4 fourty guys right?

Neal is not a RB.

Cierre Wood is not an every down back. He needs to split the carries in order to be that effective again. The drop off was big after Gray went down.

I hope your kidding about that. They are going to be our two of our top three offensive weapons next season (Eifert as the other). Atkinson hasn't proven anything yet except that he is super fast. Carlisle is not much better in the experience area and he prob won't be playing this year anyways.

Also, I'm just as excited about Neal as the next guy, but he prob won't see the field besides on returns till later in the year if at all. I would love to be wrong about that though. He will have to learn a ton of the offense in just fall camp.

It will be interesting to see what is going to happen with the Alfred Rb/Slot group. I would not be surprised if they start training Neal as a Riddick-type-role. Primarily a wr but motioning in the backfield and taking a few hand-offs and screens.

I don't see him getting the touches to hit 1,500. Too much talent on the field, especially at the slot/rb position. I do think his YPC will increase, however. Defenses aren't going to know what to do or who to defend which should open up some serious running lanes. This year is going to be fun to watch!

Although if we can get one of our dual-threat QB's to play well, it opens SO many holes in the defense. Defenses will try to either load the box, trying to stop our QB and RB or drop back because of Eifert and hopefully another WR that will step up. Although there's many ifs next year if they are accomplished we could have a very good year next year.

Absolutely agree with this. Cierre Wood is great at what he does, being a shifty, burst for speed kind of back. However, without the power back to complement him its much easier for the defense to stop Cierre. Don't get me wrong, I think Cierres a good back, but he needs someone else with him to create more of a balanced running game but also to take some of the hits off of Cierre.

All we need is the accurate dart-throwing QB who can run some and otherwise extend the plays when the initial stuff called isn't there. If we have that, then

1). Cierre et al have all the "surprise" that they need, and our RB situation is plenty good enough all the way downfield to the near goal line. Kelly will have to come up with something new there [maybe Hendrix, Mahone, or some "big load" gimmick --- we certainly have the line and the TEs to do it].

2). the accurate dart-thrower makes any tough sure-handed and smart receiver extremely productive. Our guys aren't Wes Welker but they're plenty good. If Davonte's smart, tough, and sure-handed, he'll shine as one of them.

3). the play-extending QB then explodes the defense and lets the game-changers and speed merchants occasionally bust long ones. Neal plays to that threat, but we have several guys who do [including Eifert, and I'll bet Koyack].

The bottomline here for me is that our roster is loaded with all the flashy talent that anyone could reasonably want for a Kelly offense. We need to fix QB [and not even to super-elite level] and all the other potentials are lying in waiting.

Old Man Mike, you're def right about fixing the QB position, but don't forget we have no proven guys at the WR position. A bunch of guys need to step up, and we have yet to see it.

I couldn't agree more with this. Just take a step back and realize the talent that has been brought in. We often get caught up in who doesn't choose to come to ND and forget who has. Our major glaring problem last year was QB play. Kelly brought in the #1 QB in the country to help address those issues, above and beyond who may or may not already be capable of doing so on the roster. And some people had a problem with this.

With talent at QB, we can then try and take advantage of the great talent at the other positions on offense. It really is going to make spring practice exciting to watch. Imagine how the production of players like TJ Jones, Riddick, hell even Eifert will jump when there's a legit QB throwing to them. And this will only open up the running game. I'm beyond excited.

Perfect example is Alex Welch. Alex was ahead of Kyle Rudolph coming into ND per everyone I talked to from Cinci familiar with Elder. Last year I talked to his cousin and aunt at the SC game and his foot infection was (SERIOUS), like where most people would be worried about ever walking again. He is fully recovered. Expect big things from him this year.

So with the elusiveness and speed we have, we could have two of three (Eifert, Koyack, and Welch) on the field at a time. Nobody in America can do that!

I think some of you are undervaluing Wood a little bit. I think he will be a HUGE asset for the 2012 season. If we have a legit QB who can spread the field and create a passing threat, it will open enough holes for Wood to fly through. I have some high expectations for Wood next year, the only reason he didnt do more last year was because Gray earned his spot which took away touches from Wood. The last two games of the season Stanford and FSU had two things that made Wood drop off a little
1) They were better defenses
2) We have horrible QB play, if I remember correctly, Stanford loaded the box quite often, not sure about FSU, but it wouldnt surprise me because our QB play in that game was subpar as well.

Wood will be fine if we have a legit air attack that will keep defenses honest. About the only back in the country who could run well against a loaded box last year was Trent Richardson, but even then, his stats dropped slightly.

Totally agree. And in this day and age, with elite weapons at TE it opens up the entire offense. We love Eifert, but then we completely forget about Welch and then even Koyack! Loaded with talent. Man, cannot wait!

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Two tragedies so close together is just heartbreaking.
