Would it be considered weird if you walked up to him and picked him up so you could estimate his weight? I mean it's not like friending a recruit on facebook, or something foolish like that. After all, he is already in the student directory.

This had me laughing out loud.

Seriously, who really cares about his height if he is the next great ND QB? NO ONE

It is hard to say what a chick weighs as they have lean muscle mass. They can easily look lighter than what they are. I always appeared to weigh less than what I really was. How you look in pads doesn't complete passes or win games. He just needs to have enough muscle mass to make it through a 12-13 game season. I am happy to hear he is working on hard in the weight room, as it shows he is driven and knows where success on the field starts.

This is what I try to convince myself of every morning after I bring a fatty home from the bar.

To be honest, I'm 5'9 and I thought 170 was too big for me and I have a pretty thick frame. 185 on a 5'10 - 5'11 frame is not that bad.

I still run over people willy-nilly...lol

But you're not playing Big Boy DI-A football. 185 is small-ish. He might not get killed on any one particular play, but you have to question if anyone that big can take the pounding that he would likely take, in a spread option offense at ND.

If I was 185, I wouldn't be scared of playing Division one football in the least. I wouldn't be afraid if I was a healthier 170 for that matter. lol

I don't think anyone can size someone up just by looks. I remember when I first when to the recruiter to re-enlist. He said "how much do you weigh? About 210 or so?" I wasn't sure so I stepped on the scale and I weighed 230. Kind of a big difference and I am 5'9.

But in the end weight really doesn't mean much if he can play. As long as he runs only when need be, he shouldn't be in too much danger, like a Denard.

Size is relative to performance in any given sport. I was a short, skinny swimmer in high school. I was all of 5'7 and 125 lbs. Sitting in the pre-heat tents the common question was "What's your best time?"

Most lied in an attempt to psyche their competitors out. I didn't. They assumed I was "embellishing." I loved the look on their 6 foot plus, long armed and long legged faces when I kicked their asses.

I'm not about to claim that my diminutive stature and large competitive spirit has any concrete relation to football, but heart and spirit play a role.

Hell, any decent sized football player would have left me a pancake on the grass. A sumo wrestler would have left me a crepe in the ring.

Play on, compete on. Sometimes the size of one's heart and head matter most.

I agree with everything you said. In fact, I was a swimmer. However, I was also a water polo player, and I can promise you, I used every inch and pound to my advantage. I think Golson has several great qualities, and can be a great QB for us, but honestly I am afraid if he can last an entire season at his size. Thats simply my concern, but I think he can do great things honestly.

Point taken. I never played water polo in high school. It wasn't much of a "thing" when I was in high school except for fancy-dancy prep schools in New England. I did play one game at the end of a swimming PE rotation at ND. My advantage over the wannabe football and basketball players was my ability to smoothly keep my head above water and pass or shoot without gasping or gagging on inhaled water.

It was a different story five years after my graduation from ND when I played a "casual" game in Minneapolis with some experienced Ivy League players. I damn near drowned and took myself out of the game as tired as I'd ever been in my life ... including the the time I swam a 1600 yard freestyle in high school.

I played ball at a whopping 5'7" weighing in at an unbelievably heavy 130 lbs. my sophomore year. Never left the field on JV and was in the 2 deep on Varsity. and this was the year after I was the starting DT and LG for my freshman team. That right there should tell you how good our teams were by the way. Injuries were never a problem. But I made sure fundamentally I was the best on the field and if I did get lit up knowing how to take the hit and how to land was a big help. Size is important, but so is a little bit of F**k You. I'll take the guy who is a little undersized with a whole lot of F**k You 10 times out of 10 if the athletic ability is there.

Great story. Kinda like:

You're 5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin', and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there ...

and

... If you had a tenth of the heart of Ruettiger, you'd have made All-American by now! As it is, you just went from third team to the prep team! Get out of here!

Now when you were a 130 pound LG, just how many 330 DTs, 290 DEs, and 245 MLBs were lined up against you? And, in your backfield before you came out of your stance?

How many were All-State much less All-Americans?

Cause those are the kinds of players Golson, Rees, or whomever will face 13 times next season.

BGIF long post didn't want to quote.
The biggest guy I went against as a LG was probably 250 maybe 255 if he ate a big lunch.
That school just combined and stepped up to 4A this year so I highly doubt I would be starting there even on the freshmen team now.
In that league the best I would face playing the same schedule now would be Spence from Harrisburg.
The school I graduated from is and was in the Greater Boston League. Not exactly the best competition from one of the weakest schools in the league. Like I said the fact that I started on the line as a freshmen that small should tell you how good the team was.
Let me see if I can find ranking from 2000 and I'll see if I played anybody that went on the play even D1 ball.

And yet you're not on scholarship at ND and competing for the QB position. Weird. I was sure the staff did their due diligence.

So let's boil this down: Everett Golson is between 5'9" and 6'1" and is between 170 lbs and 210 lbs, is speed wise between the speed of sound and the speed of light, and has never played water polo?

Of our 3 upper-classmen NFL-bound studs, 1 was too skinny for a TE position and so got 3 stars, 1 was a touch too short for a LT and so only got 4 stars, and one was just right, so got 5. In our QB rotation last year, our 5 star had every measurable, but just couldn't consistently get his head on straight under pressure.

In my humble opinion, based on his tape and what comes out of practice, Golson is just an awesome football player. The fact that he is only 5'10"- 6'0" is pretty irrelevant. The fact that he's skinny seems more relevant to me, but the reality is Michael Floyd, the world's biggest receiver, spent large portions of his career hurt, while the much smaller Golden Tate was generally fine. Drew Breese plays through the NFL season, While Big Ben (tough as he is) is always injured. Its just not so neat and tidy, especially when a guy is shifty like Golson. Denard Robinson should be dead based on the popular wisdom about QB run attempts, but its much harder to get a clean shot on a guy that is so fast and athletic, so he survives.

I am wondering how a bunch of posts about 40 times from players on our team and that we are still recruiting get deleted but all these posts about ESPN being crap are still on here.

It's actually quite simple:

A. 40 times about a recruit on his own thread aren't getting deleted. Nice try though.

B. That recruit (Neal) is about to announce. People are all over that thread, waiting for news. Posts about C-Breezy's 40 time and how he'll do at ND were deleted, b/c the conversation is steering WAY away from that recruit.

C. Golson signed a LONG time ago. He's all ND obviously. When these threads are brought back to life, they go in all kinds of directions. Not much to mod here. The members take this thread where it goes, and most are really good about keeping it about the player (relatively speaking). The players that are still being recruited have threads that have to be closely modded for several reasons, most importantly b/c recruits and their families are on this site all the time.

D. You don't capitalize the word 'schools' in the middle of a sentence. Your sig has always made me laugh...

If I wanted to try...lol No, I already have joint problems. I think I could have played DI if I wanted, but I only played one year of football in high school.

What I'm saying though is that for a guy Everett's height, 185 is a pretty big weight. He doesn't need to be 200 pounds as a QB under 6 feet tall.

My post wasn't a shot at mods. I was just surprised that all the ESPN talk was kept. And it is capitalized on purpose. Its irony. Not real sure why you got personal?

Wasn't personal in a bad way, just that it always made me laugh...if it was ironic, cool. Didn't know, b/c that whole incident was started when you tried to tell OMM how to write, when your own posts were filled with grammatical errors. That was ironic as well LOL. It's all good.

As for the ESPN talk, I personally could care less where these threads go once the kids sign on. Like I said, the members do a great job for the most part on steering the conversation back towards the recruit. Not much to mod IMO...

Oh oh, while we got your attention, what's the chances we can get some IE members only jackets made up?

I'd rock that sh*t 7 days a week and twice on Sundays
