Dammit. Sure, Kelly can play the Eifert/Rudolph card but O'Brien can play the Gronkowski card.

Rudy in the patriots system would put up similar numbers imo...if he stays healthy for a long time, he'll be an even bigger freak than he is now.

No doubt this would be a great pick up for the Irish, however let's not forget that we've got Koyack.

Selling Gronkowski > selling Rudolph + Eifert + Carlson + Fasano.

We've had very productive college TEs no doubt. Gronk is on a whole different level. Hell if Gronk wasn't there Hernandez's numbers would be ridiculous.

Hopefully none of this will matter and he'll see how poisoned PSU still is.

Selling Gronkowski > selling Rudolph + Eifert + Carlson + Fasano.

Gronk wasn't some 2:s: nobody that O'Brien picked out of the crowd and turned into a star. He was drafted as the 2nd TE in the 2010 draft class by (arguably) the best head coach in the league. O'Brien can't claim any more credit for Gronk's success than Weis can for Brady's.

Don't get me wrong; I'm sure O'Brien will try to sell that. But Kelly can legitimately point to Eifert as a 3:s: nobody that he's coached up into the nation's #1 TE. O'Brien's ability to take credit for Gronk's success is much more tenuous.

I don't know if O'Brien will try to sell his development of Gronkowski as much as he'll emphasize how TE-friendly his offense is.

He can try, but he won't have the personnel to demonstrate on it the field.

Eifert, on the other hand, will likely be our #1 receiver on route to a Mackey award and #1 TE draft projection. And who knows what Koyack will do this year.

PSU really doesn't scare me here.

...

And that is an ideal selling point, "You've seen what I can do with a talented TE in the NFL, you and I can do the same in college ball when you're a freshman. Let's make history together."

It's called handling the objection. It's a great close.

Kyle Rudolph is a flat out stud TE but not in a system that doesn't take advantage of his skills.

Then there is Rob Gronkowski who's a very good TE in his own right but not in the same talent level as Rudy but he plays in a system that does takes advantage of the TE mismatches.

Gronk is good but his numbers are a product of the system. It's the same with Wes Welker. Welker was a great find for the Dolphins and was great for them hence why the gave up 2nd round draft pick for him.

Welker is the same player now as he was with the Dolphins it's just now that he's with a team with a great QB that can get the ball to him much more often and that's why he's getting 100+ receptions rather than the 60 or so he was getting in Miami.

If Rudy was with a great QB that uses the TE regularly they would be talking about him because he's just that special.

btw let's not forget ND passed on Gronk after ND got Mike Ragone and rightfully so at the time as Ragone was a special TE before the initial knee injury, the kid was an awesome athlete and hella fast.

Don't be surprised if ND has more 2 TE passing packages more than ever this season.

Beyond the normal selling points and the already heavy use of the TE, ND could very much have a Patriot like offense with constant use of 2 TE's because there is special talent at the position and there is a lack of experience at WR.

When you can spread it out and have 2 modern TE's on the field at the same time it's going to mess with what defenses are going to do because they are such a mismatches and it's not the norm and teams will struggle to find the best mix to stop or slow them down.

I think the two big things in his recruitment are going to be how the teams use the tight end and finish the season and QB play. If O'Brien is force feeding him all this Gronk stuff we will most likely counter with he has a great QB to throw him the ball. Then Adam will look at the QB play for each team and on the roster. Have to think we win that battle with Golson and Keil on the roster.

JC Shurburtt was on Bill King's radio program and he said that Adam Breneman was probably a lock to PSU before the scandal broke. He still feels that PSU leads and would say that PSU has a greater then 50% chance of landing him.

Last summer Breneman was saying he hoped to decide before his senior season. Later it seemed he backed off that a little and said it's possible he would decide before his senior season. Now, he has backed away from that even further and simply said he has no timeline and will decide when he is 100%.

The problem it would seem is that there are questions about ND and PSU that will probably not be answered until at least part way through the college season. With ND's questions at QB and PSU having a brand new coach and unsure of how good of an offense he can piece together, I would think he would probably wait until part way through the season. But that's just me being logical, and we know that recruits don't always look at things logically.

Edit:

As I thought about it a little more, I guess my point to Adam would be look at what kind of year Eifert has had the last two years while using a QB with some shortcomings. We got two studs in Golson and Kiel that we believe will result in even greater success at the TE position. It seems like there would be less questions on our end then on PSU's end.

Scott Booker is his ND Recruiter according to Keith Arnold. Big prize out of the gate for Booker.

Mr. Booker has been known to develop a good relationship with players kinda like Alford has with recruits...
