If you think our recruiting class is bad look at this:

Worst thing about this class is that it didn't fill needs for the most part. They came up short at CB, WR, OL, and LB. These are the same things that got Weis in trouble. No excuse for signing only 16 recruits.

All positions don't get filled every year. It's like the NFL draft; you draft your most dire positions and fill in where there is a surplus in the graduating class. We picked up in the secondary and QB where we really needed it.

Next years class is shaping up to be stock full of stud OT and LB, which is where we will be focusing most of our attention. Also targeting a solid TE.

Breath easy my friend; being a great football team again doesn't happen in one night, year or even 2 years. It all takes time and we are well on our way. Go Irish!

Michigan State's is rough too... 3 four stars

Dude...Cousins and some of his buddies...Martin...Cunningham...
Were 2 or 3 star guys...not too shabby
Dantonio does what Kelly has done in his career...
find the guys that fit his system, then coach them up

CB maybe we still have 6.
WR meh if we get Neal it's fine
Olinemen we have enough...
LB we have enough

Neal could end up anywhere, who knows where ND stands. All those other positions they have numbers, but still need much more quality talent and depth. Just not good enough.

Maybe you ought to look into a membership at rolltide envy or somewhere else they sign 100+ kids in four years and make a point of telling the kids the schollies are 1 year renewable contingent on performance

The NFL thing is a bad comparison, you can only draft a few players every year. You fill the rest of your needs through free agency and trades. In college, recruiting is the only way to improve your team and you usually have about 20-25 spots to do it. Simply saying we'll do better next year sets your team back. Kelly said it was a 5 minute plan not 5 year.

Okay, but would you rather take the leftover schollies that can be used on the class next year to take some 4-5* kids (that as far as we can see right now, is shaping up to be stacked in our positions of need) or take a gamble and tie up those 4 scholarships with 2-3* projects that may or may not pan out. Coach knows what he is doing. He sees past this one class, as we all should.

Yeah. Going head-to-head with Michigan, OSU and us, Sparty rarely put up big-time recruiting hauls. Still, they do pretty well on the field. Same goes for Wisconsin. Stars matter. But coaching matters, too. Get both and you start winning titles.

wouldn't mind a couple 3* guys with a chip on their shoulders.. we're certainly not guaranteed to fill up our class next year, so why not bring a guy in who's POed cuz no one respected him? I don't believe we will fill up 24 spots next year with a bunch of 4 and 5* guys and have absolutely all 24 slots solidified on NSD.. gotta take a few shots IMO, but that's just my opinion

Either do a better job of keeping your recruits commited or bring in a couple of guys to build depth. Not saying fill the class with projects, but bring in at least 1 or 2 guys you feel could help you at some point.

I agree, for the most part. We certainly aren't going to fill up a class with 4-5* kids next year and taking the stab at a 3* or 2 is fine. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have shown more interest in Andrades and gotten him. I was just pointing out to SJIrish that you can't fill up a whole class with just 3 at every position when one position is deeper than the others in a recruiting cycle.

Yeah, where we get killed in the rankings is not quality but quantity - or the lack of it. Our average star rankings are basically top 10, but we only have half as many recruits as Miami (33 kids? What the hell? I assume that has something to do with replacing sanctions-related transfers?)

Ironically I think the trouble was we were seriously in the hunt for enough elite guys to more than fill our class. Remember the "should we give KLM a fifth-year?" conversations of just a few weeks ago?
But then we didn't actually land any of them. And we lost a few. And others who we slow-played went elsewhere. Still, some of this was predictable, no? Somewhere the management of our recruiting board went awry. And I don't really get why we dropped Ekanem, for instance. Or gave Westerkamp an ultimatum.
Anyway, live and learn. Be glad for the guys we got. And recruit like hell for this day next year.

....pretty good number of Nebraska's 3*s were on the verge of being 4*...I think they got pretty good quality kids...If it fills needs...I think they did ok...Nothing to write home about either way...

Houston's get chart looks like a stick figure with an arm (DG's stars), but, if he's happy...cool.

touche'

so lets say 5.7 and 5.8 = 3.5 stars...if you do that

our class is 3.5, theirs is 3.4

if you do straight average they are 3.4 (3.35) and we are 3.5

sure we did better but not overwhelmingly better...they didn't do too bad

This class is very good, but I think most people have the sour taste of knowing it could have been EPIC. Like others have already said, it's easier to see the misses than the gets.

Bottom Line: Program needs to put it ALL on the line next year, and win 9-10+ games. If that doesn't happen, God help us all.

Nebraska's class isn't that bad....

Check out this class for example....

Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com 2012 Houston Commitments

.... what was that 4 star WR thinking?

I was talking to my coaching buddies yesterday (I avoided them on NSD because I knew the ragging on losing a kid to Houston would be unbearable) and one of them brought up a great point. Four or Five years ago, Ocean Springs High School, in Mississippi, had a 5 satr WR (we couldn't remember his name) that had offers from just about every school in the country. He ended up choosing Southern Miss. It was almost like he fell into the abyss, no one heard about him after that. He ended up having a decent senior year, but the most recognition he got was in a televised game where the announcer talked about how he was regarded as the next great WR four years ago and he has largely went unknown since his time began at Southern Miss. I will look it up and edit when I find his name and if he went to the NFL.

I found it! His name is DeAndre Brown. He was indeed a 5 star. His freshman season was his best when he surpassed 1,000 yards receiving, going down hill his sophmore and junior years. He entered the draft after his junior season and went undrafted. He was picked up by The Eagles. He was waived and is now a free agent.

Not saying that this will happen to "Tee's cousin", but it sounds like similiar path.

Moore1: Name a school (that graduates its players) that gets every recruit they want.
I picture you walking around sucking on a lemon all day.

NYC: ND players stay until they graduate. 85 is the limit, divided among 4 classes plus fifth year players, we can average 21 per year. Even with a class as small as 16, ND will still only have room for 20 in 2013.
SEC schools (and places like Miami) can recruit 25 (plus several they can EE and apply to the prior year, knowing half of them will flunk out or be run off, thereby always leaving room for another full class the following year.

I will always cheer for ND because they are willing to take the high road. I don't want to win championships on the strength of sacrificed ideals.
